Im 40 years old. Ive owned to GTI's. A '86 and a '02 1.8T. Ive also owned a '10 Mazda3 S hatch(till I got crunched). Ive driven the speed3 also. Both are superb cars with different missions. So for me its the well mannered grown up GTI. But I didnt get one. Instead I bought a 2012 VW CC 2.0T with the 6 speed manual. I drove bot with the DSG and just could not get used to the bogged down feeling when i first start. 0% for 72 helped too!!
mazdaspeed3 all day everyday!! The gti and volvo are a joke little girls own them who can't handle real power and complain about torque steer! Ms3 ftw!
i love this car however I'm going to have to disagree with you on the brakes, they are a tad undersized for the car. I've talked to the VW techs they use the same brakes basically in all their cars lol
i have an 1986 toyota mr2, naturally aspirated with aftermarket exhaust and i beat these crappy gti's everytime the little punks driving them want to race.for a new turbocharged car, thats pretty sad.
The TSX's engine felt mellow and smooth while the GTI felt like it was struggling. I can't wait to test the 2010/11 MazdaSpeed3. I drove a 2009 and there was tremendous torque steer so hopefully the 2010 will be better.
In conclusion, I hope VW has dealt with its reliability issue. I owned two GTIs in the 1980's and they were a nightmare to own but absolute fun to drive.
The GTI interior did not seem especially fantastic to me but I should mention that I drove the car after driving to the dealership in a 2009 Acura TSX so my reaction to the interior may have been influenced by that.
Lastly, the car felt very light to me. Although it was fun to drive, on the highway it did not seem as planted to the pavement as the TSX. Nor did it seem as powerful despite the 1 horsepower difference.
It's nice to see this style of review with two different reviewers. I must say that my experience test driving the GTI mirrors what the reviewer in red says. I enjoyed driving it but at low speeds it seemed very economy car-like. But when I hit the highway it was a blast to drive. I had the same body roll problem he referenced especially when compared to my much loved 2006 RSX Type S I no longer own.
We have to note that Europeans cars are little bit different in the US. Because of the certain laws and requirements we have in the states, GTI in Europe is different from GTI in US. They brought the Fiat 500 recently and Fiat had to change a lot of things to make it legal in the US. and I am sure VW had to do the same for their cars.
@jaks1989 The GTI in the US is a downgraded European version, VW doesn't have the same image and reputition in the US, so VW tries to keep their cars as cheap as possible to stay atractive in the US market.
@jonen9494 - We know Matt @ the Smoking Tire, and he does a great show. He also has a different approach than we do and some people prefer our show over his. There's no right answer - just personal preference there.
We also hope you noticed that both of the guys really liked the GTI. It is an amazing car, and deserves its awards. But no car is perfect either - and pointing out faults or opinions you don't agree with isn't lying.
People shut up about the seats VW knows some don't like the plaid so they offer leather so its black and the interior is far better in the GTI than the other two
@555NaKuL yes, easily reflash the ECU. you change the system that manages the engine and how it runs. most modern cars, I think more the european ones, are like that
Ive had several vws and have not had one break down on me. Had a mkiv gti for a few years never had one problem except a blown fuse that cost $2 to replace. I'll be getting a new gti or maybe r20 if those come to the us as my next car, bought a 08 350z a couple years ago b/c i was tired of the "underpowered" gti, looking back the GTI was the best car ive owned in a lot of ways, although not the fastest.
GTI is not the hottest hot hatch... i think its more for the guy who always wanted that Audi/Porsche but cant afford it. Class over power which isn't bad... just a different crowd. I'll take the MS3 cause i do track sessions and know it can handle the abuse... but if i were close to 40 and wanted that hot hatch still... GTI all the way.
the bald guy in this video, is a typical retail and badge sucker, and a complete idiot.
The segment is called the hot hatch segment, what is hot about the GTI ? Nothing, its basic and boring on the outside, bland on the inside and nothing 'HOT" about 200hp in 2010. Its an boring euro-box that is as exciting as those ridiculous seats.
And the name of the show is Everydaydriver, ever seen the reliability reviews and rating on a golf or gti ? it breaks down ALOT!
@aimtrue45 as far as i know, there were 2 ferraris with automatics in them. so that's pretty null. and corvettes? majority of them are sold to middle aged men going through their crisis, so again null. you're not bringing up ENTHUSIASTS, you're bringing up posers. and as for race cars? majority of race cars are not auto, not unless you're speaking of drag cars
@crappyMCcrapperson I wouldn't want to label people who choose an auto transmission as "posers" any more than I'd call someone an "enthusiast" just because he likes stepping on a clutch and rowing a stick through traffic. Those generalizations are overly broad. Everyone has their own preference. My original point on this post was that the VW GTI offered an excellent alternate choice with the DSG, which the Mazdaspeed3 does not, and I stand by that opinion. A DSG GTI is not for "posers".
Everyone always compares the GTI to the Mazdaspeed3, but to me there's no comparison for those who reside in urban areas and desire an autobox: the GTI has a very advanced DSG six-speed transmission and the Mazda doesn't offer one on the Speed3. For this reason alone, the Volkswagen appeals to a wider market. I just ordered a 2011 model.
I do! With no apologies. If you search other road test reports on the internet you'll find the VW DSG auto transmission actually accelerates to 60 mph faster than the stick shift because of the reduced time between gear changes on the autoshifter. Not everyone thinks rowing gears through daily rush hour traffic is "sporty". In the real world of rush hour traffic and downtown driving, the VW DSG offers the best of both: sporty and convenient.
there is torquesteer...ok, it's nearly 300hp in the front wheels, why just they don't put an lsd to solve the case? why the mazdaspeed3 has to has the ungliest front bumper in the world? it's the best of the three! it's also japanese, but why it hasn't got a limited slip diff? why it is so dummy-designed at the front?
Cornering limits 0.87g? Similar to Taurus? That understeering pig? Versus MS3's 0.90g? Where are you getting your information from? * Because in every other magazine they got it the other way around! for example: Motortrend MS3 - 0.90g GTi - 0.91g * CarandDriver MS3 - 0.92g GTi - 0.93g * TheSmokingTire Gti beats MS3 around a track and it certainly isn't down to power. * It's not the first time I noticed your G's were a bit odd. I guess you sometimes get them from separate sources for each car.
@sspope - Excellent question. Lateral g testing varies wildly. So what we do is take a variety of sources and average them. Edmunds, for example has gotten a 2010 GTI lateral g of .84 in one test, .87 in another.
We don't consider any one source (including us) to be the definitive on measurements.
And ultimately, numbers and measurements are just that - numbers. From the drivers seat, there's no question that the MS3 has higher cornering limits and that matters to us more than the number.
@EverydayDriver But the review by Edmunds mentions their Gti was on all season tires which harmed lap times significantly. I've also read some other hot hatch comparisons literally stating that Golf turns in better than MS3 wich has harder suspension and isn't that the whole point of engineering an everyday sports car?
Was your test car equipped with all season tires too?
@EverydayDriver Have you ever considered maybe doing your own instrumented testing? Just curious on how your shows capabilities would be if you did your own instrumented testing as Motortrend does. I'm not saying your show is bad in any way...honestly I like it because you're not trying to be someone you're not. You're honest without being cocky, and exciteable without being annoying. And I really like your comparisons of older/used cars.
There seems to be a massive handling difference between the plain tires that came on the 17" wheels and the summer (or at least performance all-weather) tires that come on the 18" 'detroit' wheels.
You may want to do a follow-up review on the GTI since starting in 2011 the better tires are now standard.
@sspope each reviewer could have been using different tires, cause i know consumer reports always is much slower in terms of driving, their slalom for the gti is like 55 mph while others are in the high 60s almost 70
@sspope The reason the GTI was faster on thesmokingtire is due to the fact you do not even get out of third gear on that track. Go to a real track and the MS3 will pull seconds on the GTI. The MS3 is limited in the first three gears, so the power isnt comming into play. I love my GTI and I will drive it everyday over the MS3 but my MS3 is my track car and its for a reason.
I can appreciate the sophisticated quality and the refined performance, but I can't get past the plaid, and the overall "wagon" styling.
Also.. this is 2010. At least design regular projection headlights if you're going to cheap out on HID. This segment sort of demands it, if you're going to comment about "attention to detail" and adding aluminum accenting to your window switches...
i personally think the GTI wins this no questions asked. simply because, i'm not always in the mood to race, most times i'm too lazy to drive around something like an Evo, its just demanding. this car makes a great commuting car, not too high on RPM's and its quiet, you get around just fine, and when you want it too, it can go well over the 2x the speed limit.
and its a roomy car for a small pacakge, it just does everything you would want, and does it just right.
i'm biased towards the germans but, when i test drove the mark 6 GTi it just didn't do it for me the power was "meh" and the exhaust tone was like a leaf blower. :( really disapointing. the MS3 was an awesome test drive alot crazier, spun the tires by accident. at the end i got neither of them though and i went the used car route. still awesome cars though, i was expecting alot more from the GTi. oh well :D
@bottomlayer ended up getting an 05 audi S4 for 22k (i lucked out too, previous owner had installed an aftermarket exhaust so he/she saved me some cash there haha)
The GTI seems like a winner, with the solid feel and body styles (2 and 4-door hatch, sedan, and wagon), and you can even get a huge sunroof unavailable in the MS3, but has VW improved their reliability enough to make it worth buying?
