@Huntaltos I say if his music sounds great, who cares about where it comes from? We must stop thinking about countries and unify ourselves as a race. Yes we all recall the mistakes of the past but we should think about today and of course... tomorrow. Let's choose peace for all.
Who cares if the composer was a Russian, a German or a Prussian...or even an Italian! I thought the point of it was the great music. Although, I must say, the violinist seemed a bit suspect....
Far out, if the audience is going to clap they should at least keep in time! Ruined a beautiful performance. Other than that I do enjoy the Merry Widow, and Mr Rieu played it beautifully.
if you read history, Hungary was one of the most ravaged people on earth...from Genghis Khan, the turks, Austria, Nazi Germany, Communist Russia, just to name a few that occupied that country...
@010bobby Armenia, too, has had more than its share of oppressors/occupiers. There were the Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Mongols, Persians, Seljuk then Ottoman Turks and Russians. I think that's all of them, but not 100% sure. I think we saw a bit of the Huns too.
@Buli451 You are correct. "Ther Merry Widow" was, indeed, Hitler's favorite entertinment. Lehár's wife, Sophie was Jewish (converted to Catholisism) and Hitler ordered that she be declared "Ehrenarierin" - an honorary Aryan! Not so some of Lehár's Jewish librettists, who were sent to the death camps.
Who says that this so-called "light" music doesn't have profound effects - like the power of life and death?
@Bazzito52 It means that Adolf Hitler liked fine, delicate, elegant music. What about Wagner??? He was Stalin's favourite? This is Music, a Masterpiece!! GET OUT DIRTY POLITICS FROM HERE!!!!
@demirham Well, I'm sorry that neither of us can change history, but it's true.
So, we both love the same music as Hitler? What does that have to do with politics?
We can't stop Hitler from having enjoyed "The Merry Widow" any more than the Germans can watch "The Longest Day" and expect a different ending.
Did Heifetz deserve to get attacked with a crowbar in Israel in 1953 when he programmed the Richard Strauss sonata? Are we supposed to hate any music that some Nazi liked?
I love this piece, and he plays it beautifully. It put me in mind of the last hours of titanic. This piece was played and features in the White Star Line Songbook. This piece we played with the orchestra and it was very moving. I love Andre's version and he looks so at home with this piece. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I like the faint sounds of the choir in the background. Lehar is one of the kings of Waltzes. I would have loved to have been there in the audience!!! wow.
he was hungarian, born in today slovakia, studied in prague and than lived and worked in austria and composed all operettas with german librettos so austro-hungarian composer fits quite well.. :))
@Huntaltos he was what hw as and he was brilliant.. now get over the historic and political stuff... you weren't even born then !!! ENJOY HIS WORKS>>> OPEN TO ALLL !!!!
Well, that world had a feeling of course, but I absolutely do not think the Austro-Hungarian world was better.
You know, Austria has exploited Hungary, we could not improve our industry, economy, etc. The official language was the German, so the Education was demaged too. Anyway we lost a lot.
But the century XIX had a nice feeling what also is shown in the operets... I like it.
@Huntaltos I say if his music sounds great, who cares about where it comes from? We must stop thinking about countries and unify ourselves as a race. Yes we all recall the mistakes of the past but we should think about today and of course... tomorrow. Let's choose peace for all.
Oooh, yes! Because of these YouTube snippets, I've already bought the Dublin and Tuscany concerts on DVD and will buy the lot as I can. Andre is fantastic! And isn't it just the best dressed orchestra around?! ;)
And, yep, I think the Dublin audience is my favorite, although all the audiences have a load of fun at his concerts.
This is another delightful performance by Andre Rieu and friends. It is as much fun to watch the audience response as it is his performance. Costumes add to the ambience.

Should I shun the music because Lehar was Hitlers favorite musician? Or should I let go and let the music stand for itself??

Dear "clarebannerman",
Why do you call Lehár Ferenc as Austro-Hungarian composer?
He was absolutly Hungarian, but -regrettably- he lived in Austo-Hungarian Monarchia.
Thanks,
Zoltan
