By the way at the age of 7, children should have a general knowledge of what is right and wrong, what you should or should not do.
I feel no sympathy. The child won a Darwin Award. There's a lesson to be learned. And anyone DARES to find and excuse or pardon for the parents, please plot your child in front of the screen and EDUCATE them, so that they do not suffer the same fate. It's that simple.
There are barricades between the viewing public and the animal for a reason. I have seen too many videos where someone has climbed over the barricade to get a closer look and wound up getting attacked by the animal in the cage. You cannot fault the animal for any of these attacks, it was just doing what comes naturally. People need to learn to respect that layer of protection and stop thinking they are invincible or better yet, just use your head and think period.
when I was seven I was smart enough to avoid even a dog off a leash seeing him come down the street with no seeming owner; they should also have two fences
In this really remote area of Perú (that city is completelly surrounded by 12,000 feet high mountains, in a canyon deeper than the Grand Canyon),if you want to see Pumas, U just have to walk 2 or 3 kilometers out of the city...I don't know what's the point of having one in a zoo... (BTW, PUMA is the original peruvian native name of this animal in a language named quechua... the city of Cuzco is said to be made after a figure of a Puma..I used to live there on a street named Pumaurco) just Info
@sakkurae i think a 7 year old child can tell the different between a big cat and a small pet. Also you say the puma is stupid, sure they may be to us but what are you expecting a preditor is going to protect its territory even if it is a small child.
The people running the zoo are a bunch of incompetents, who must compensate the family.
Anyone wanting to run a zoo has an obligation to make the place foolproof safe; because no matter how attentive the parent, there is always the likelihood of that one fatal lapse in attentiveness to their children.
Not even adults should be able to just reach out and touch the animals, especially not the aggressive ones
Wow look at all these Americans with the moronic sole solution to all problems in America.
NO THEY ARE NOT GOING TO SUE FOOLS. This didn't happen in America where it is understood that parents are incompetents and that the zoo needs to take care of everybody's children, it happened in Peru and I'm sure it would get laughed out of court.
This is not the fault of the zoo who had the animal behind a fence (presumably not for putting hands through), it's the fault of failed parenting and bad luck
i see wrong on both side, the family and the zoo. should have give more protection to the visitor by putting a second fence or some sort of that thing. And as a parent, you shouldn't let you child to get too close to the "only fence".
Kids are curious and they almost always stick their hands through fences. There should have been no way for a child to stick his hand through that fence. There should have been something there to protect kids from being injured by deadly animals.
What kind of parents don't watch their seven year old child while he's sticking his hand in a wild animals fence? What were the parents doing while the boy had his hand in the fence? Stupid kid and stupid parents. Wild animals aren't put here for our amusement and entertainment. To think you have an animal trained or tamed is just an illusion.
@zarathos14 Uhm.. I don't think he was in the wrong at all. I completely agree and for the parents to think they have a leg to stand on would be wrong. It's not bad for Karma. This was honestly a severe case of stupidity. It's like when a person purposely sticks their finger in a lightbulb socket. "Well what did you think would happen?!" ~_~
@exacerbatedtaboo Mexican parents. Not all of course, but the ones in severe poverty. They don't usually watch their children at all, so they can run around Goodwill's pushing you out of their way and breaking things, or tapping on glass at animal shelters when they're not supposed to, or laughing and running around excessively loud.
This was such a terrible thing that happened and I feel bad for the family of the little boy, but what you take an animal out of the wild that cannot be domesticated and cage it up...you're kind of asking for it.
No...you're asking it when you put your arm through a fence that is keeping that wild animal from ripping your apart.
And there are a lot more animals out there born in captivity you know. Do you suggest we throw them into the wild to get killed by the other wild animals?
Ya gotta be smarter than the fence.

a chain link fence is not adequate to keep a puma a safe distance away from people visiting a zoo and the parents should have been watching the boy.
