While I do believe women deserve dignity and respect, I don't think Joel fully demonstrated those beliefs here. The reason I say this is because she has wrestled since 2nd grade, understood and accepted all the risks of wrestling, and became pretty damn good at it. She worked hard to earn her bid to the state tournament and compete. To treat her equally and wrestle her would have been the way to show respect towards her; that what she wanted.

First, the pseudo-biological argument "boys are just naturally stronger than girls" as justification for not allowing mixed-gender wrestling is BS. Secondly, that father's statement disturbs me deeply. "Girls should be treated with dignity and respect" implying that the way to do this is to not meet them in combat (regardless of whether said combat is honorable, fairly judged, nonviolent, and the combatants are determined to be of equal worth, which FURTHER implies that MEN should NOT be treated with dignity and respect in this manner. What I hear is "it's okay for boys to beat the shit out of each other, they're not as valuable as women."
