Discovered this band thx to The Simpsons and I really enjoy listening to it, any1 knows if the piece of song played in The Simpsons and called "Mayonnaise and mermelade" really exits as a song? Because i have only been able to find the 45 seconds piece found in The Simpsons episode and I can't stop playing it all over again, it is such a beautiful song...
the 12 bar blues is a blues in a repetetive 12 bar pattern, in fact most rock'n'roll of the 50s is 12 bar blues, "Johnny B Goode" for instance. Buddy Holly also based his music on the 12 bar blues.
the Marx Bros of rock 'n roll, even their shitty shows were great for their irreverence, always bordering on the surreal, like ending with a karaoke version of "i just called to say i loved you". Tour again, please!
12 bar blues is a song FORM, which NRBQ is explaining here. Anyone could take this form, as many have, & apply new lyrics, chords, and rhythms in order to create "new" songs.
This is the type of song I would play for my kids at a young age. Not only is it good music but it can help teach how to count AND teach basic musical theory too!
it has 4 measures in whatever the key of the song is, 2 measures 5 half steps up, 2 measures in the first key, 1 measure 7 half steps up, 1 measure 5 half steps up, 1 in first key and one 7 half steps up
oh man it is soooo fun to play the 12 bar blues... i usually play the tabs E(open),E4, A2, A4, A5 or D2. then move up then back down that same style then move my hand up 2 frets. its gets into your blood once u play it lol!
im not that old but man these guys rock....lest we forget the 12 bar blues is what rock and roll is all about...listen to ac/dc its all the same song, little richard, elvis, chuck, muddy,buddy...america is just getting around to giving thisfact its prop's finally maybe my african american friends can someday admit they like travis tritt and waylon to more people than just me. its all american essence and I love it. then again yo yo ma to me is a blues guy all the way
im thinking chord progressions and notes from the black keys otherwise known as the slave scale....what are you thinkin? My music theory classes taught me all about it......now what
I agree. I'm an ACDC fan but yet I still haven't heard ALL of their albums... but I snagged ACDC Live for rock band and I have to say playing 'The Jack' was so fun, because I'd never heard it before, but it was your standard old school blues progression that just gave the song this great, nasty groove. Good stuff.
A musician's band... these guys are the working definition of ALCHEMY. No band on earth grooves like NRBQ. Joey, Tommy, Terry, Big Al, and let's not forget our boy Johnny who stepped into Big Al's big shoes and is doing a terrific job of it. Long Live the Q!
It seems the band is on hiatus as of 4-25-08, hope it doesn't last long. Your uncle Joey Spampinato has written some of the most amazing music I've ever heard. Absolute genius, and a truly unique great bassist. The BEST ballad writer in rock, period. I'm a pro bassist, goin' on 40 years now, I have every cd I could find by them.... I love these guys!
I love NRBQ - The best 'undiscovered' band on Earth. What a shame they haven't been more successful, they truly deserve it. You can hardly find their cd's except online now. America buys worthless crap like 50 cent and m&m, and real music by genius like these musicians gets overlooked.
Can't argue about the quality of the band, and i was lucky enough to see them live dozens of times. But it seems biased and curmudgeonly to compare their overly modest success to the popularity of recent acts in a whole different genre, when you could easily come up with a long list of their contemporary rock and roll bands with far less talent who made it big.
@bigbass421 if you can't appreciate other music then you will never grow musically. all music comes from other music. just because you dont like it, doesnt make it bad because people like different things.
@bigbass421 Overlooked by idiots. Who cares if a Britney or Backstreet fan is listening to NRBQ ? I prefer if my favourite bands aren't popular. It means they are less likely to be whored out on an advertisement. It means you are less likely to walk into a clothes shop and hear their music playing. It means the music is just for you and other like minded people. That's fine by me. The mass public can have Bieber and Usher and Fiddy and Far East Movement, I'll take NRBQ, FSOL and FUSE.
@checkoutgirl I honestly don't mean to be a dick...but your comment was about how you don't want your favorite bands to be popular, but then you advertise a few of your favorite bands at the bottom. That just doesn't make any sense.
Great musicians all! Especially Big Al...he can play that guitar. A greatly under-rated band. Saw them in the 70s and 80s and always wondered why they never made it big. They had a ton of great songs and what a vibe!
this may be the best-quality NRBQ vid on youtube (notwithstanding the early cut)...thank you for giving people a good taste of what the boys were really like in concert.
I feel the same. Once at the Chestnut Cabaret was not enought. I first started hearing about these guys back in '81! I've seen a lot of bands, and these guys really rocked the house!!! Every one of 'em born crazy, too.

And the song Howard Johnson wasn't recorded in a Howard Johnson's.
And this song is about twelve bar blues. It doesn't claim to be twelve bar blues.

12-bar blues is a type of generic guitar riff that originated in blues, but is also very common in rock music.
