I was a skate guard at a roller rink and at the end of the evening friday session, there would be a sock hop for those who wanted to stay and we would dance to this over and over. fond memories!
Sam and the Pharohs had a number of other hits too. They were something of a novelty band with great technical skills, and were really popular on the club scene as well as larger venues.
Full Metal Jacket! The first appearance of my boy " Animal Mother " when he was about to get in Joker's ass!! A lot of people associate " The Bird Is The Word " with this movie more so than " Wooly Booly "
ALSO 2 all the racist white fuck heads on this thread...90% of the best classic rock came from England i.e. the brit invasion so take your white power shit and educate your selves...fuck New York and American pride what do we have to be proud of besides freedom of speech,....recession and an astronomical debt were never going to climb out of. Heading to Ireland to get old and drunk!
As a 28 year old white male from Chicago...9/11ers and all of New York need to get the fuck over 9/11 and stop pissin' and whining! Never Forget cause u media fucks will not allow me to!! And if you think i'm not American go ahead, my Father is a Vietnam vet that was awarded a Purple Heart and picks shrapnel out of his arms and legs to this day and even he will tell you those firemen in NY are not heros. WHY THE FUCK WERE THEY EVEN MENTIONED ON VETERAN'S DAY even i don't get that one!
As an ignorant Englishman, I never knew these were Texans. This is the theme song of Wolves (Wolverhampton Wanderers to non English) and I always thought this was an English/British band. Just shows how stupid I am.
@istanbulbob Don't feel bad. D.Js here in the colonies told us at the time that Sam The Sham and his band were actually from Memphis, Tennesse and NOT from Memphis, Egypt(!!!!!) It was a revelation to most of us who thought they were an Egyptian band. Besides, your Wolves had good taste!
@GUIDOBRAT I stand corrected. And the DJ. I just thought it was funny that the DJ had to tell people the band wasn't from Egypt. After all these years, I still like Wooly Bully. Most oldies don't age so well.

This was an awesome sound to hear at dance clubs......As you walked in and this played you could feel the ground vibrate and shake beneath the feet to the beat. On a hot summers night this beautiful sound travelled across the clear starlight warm night and below there would be the passion wagons in full use.....Na not me though I was too young, shy and innocent on its original release. It was later when they played it as part of the DJ's collection that I heard it when I was older....smiles
@FPSdaybreaK I am sorry what? Luvvvvv this song. Remember it from my pre-teen years. Remember a fat little kid on the block when he'd walk around shakin' his tush, singing in slow motion with a grin on his apple-pie face, "Bully-Bully" I wanted to shake him and scream, "It's Wooly-bully, not Bully-bully". But I didn't because him singing, "Bully-Bully was much funnier than the original. Good times. Where did they go?
One of my all time favorite songs. It's simple and it's silly. But it is everything a pop rock song should be. I loved it when I first heard it 50 years ago and I loved every since and I love it today. And I always thought I would be alone standing up for this great song against all the critics and connooisserurs of popular american music, but then I saw Joan Jet do it live. I am redeemed. Thankd for this video. I love it.
Let's see, what's the story that I read; Sam the Sham, real name Domingo Samudio was working on an oil rig offshore or in a boat somewhere when one of his songs came on the radio and someone who was with him stated that he wondered whatever happened to Sam The Sham. Domingo replies "I heard that he died."
There were so many amazing groups back in the '60s that we never had time to fully-appreciate most of them. Sam The Sham & The Pharoahs were more than a novelty act. These guys could really play some smokin' rock & roll.

My guitar teacher played with Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs for a while. FWTW. Love the shtick with the Cleopatras standing there akimbo with no movement while the wild male music surges around them.
I remember watching this live. (Showing my age.) He strained his voice with the yell just before the instrumental. Caused him to break on the high note on the last chorus. He was like, "Oops!"
Sax players are just about cool. Tore up their solos too.
