  • today there would be 100 youtube clips of this from off the tv and in the audience. luckily 43 yrs. ago someone had the sense to whip out their tape recorder! i'm guessing it was one of those reel to reel "mission impossible" style recorders. ah the good old days of analog tape!

  • Where is the video?

  • I actually saw this when it aired. Yes, it was after their show was cancelled on NBC and Peter had left. I remember Carson and Micky discussing his carrying something over to Carson's desk in a bag, and Carson said to Micky, "Nice luggage," or something like that. The audio on this sounds like it was recorded off someone's TV, but thanks for posting anyway. Maybe the Carson estate or NBC--whomever owns the rights to this particular show--will release the video someday!

  • @rockgirl954 thanks for telling me i my self looking for some rare tv shows that are not commericaly not avaibile. suck lot of networks wiped out lot of tv footage in the early days.

  • No Peter?

  • @jehouse this was after the show went off the air and Peter had left the group

  • sucks tv studios cut or earsed early video recordings in the day if only they keep them in studio warehouse and put them on dvd.

  • @smokey11able DVD came about in 1997. This was 1969.

  • @circlesky73 ok thank you. suck there is not video of this.

  • @smokey11able By about 1972 or so Johnny Carson wised up to NBC and began keeping videotapes of every show. I think they are stored somewhere in Nevada? Sadly prior to that NBC wiped most of his shows so very little video remains.

  • This is cute but the audio hurts my ears

  • Look at Davy and Micky...you're looking at their pic on the "Changes" album. I always knew that wan't a real picture of them on that cover!!!

  • @ShadesBelow03 Oh I didnt know that

  • @ShadesBelow03 And on "Changes" you can see part of Mike's shadow on the left, it's violet. They just sloppily cropped his image out.

  • I once asked Micky how he learned to sing this difficult song so fast. He told me he learned it at half speed, then he'd speed it up until he finally got it.

  • 4 people went down. XP

  • @Chynaash Thats dumb lol

  • very cool-

  • Hey Guys!! yeah you :D ! LIKE BOTH MONKEES AND BEATLES???? THEN............ Join the Club!!!! go to my channel BeatlesMonkees post on my wall or message me :D Come on guys. THE FIRST EVER MONKEES/BEATLES FAN CLUB!!

  • of anyone here saw it live on tv can you help me out my mom and dad said they watched this on tv in 69 and they both sweat to god davy jones was playing drums while mickey was front and center singing and davy was every bit as good as mickey wich blows the r and r hall of fames theory out of the waterthat they couldnt play instruments wich they are using as an excuse not to elect them to the hall

  • Mickey Dolenz invented rap! ;)

  • What a shame the quality of this performance is soooo bad!!! The original version is one of my all time fav's!!! As a teen & not knowing any better, Davie was "The Man". Nearly 50 now I understand Micky F'N jams!!! Please listen to the original version. It is UNREAL!!! Micky D, you can scant in my bed or where ever you want, I will tell you how under-estimated you are, over & over!!!

  • @TheTammylee513

I think that Mickey was one of the most underrated singers in the history of Rock. The studio version of this song proves what a wonderful singer he surely was.

  • I watched this show and I also remember Davy on drums. During the conversation with Carson a proud Micky showed a photo of Samantha and Ami - she was by far the most beautiful baby I'd ever seen. It's a shame the film is gone.

  • I saw this show. I could swear I remember Davy played drums, and he was excellent! Hard groove to play with such feeling.

  • Its a shame that most of the Carson shows from the 60's are gone. It would have been great to see this visually.

  • Best sounding clip from the show I have heard yet! To think, the video is forever lost!

  • That still photo is from the Joey Biship show i belive

  • @wileycoyote64

Good observation. Take a good close look at Davy and Micky in that photo. Also, check the cover of the Monkees final release "changes." As far as I can tell, that is the exact same picture. The still from this clip can be seen in the booklet for the Rhino CD release of Monkees "present." That's how I discovered this. Plus I've been a Monkees fan for 35 years.

  • One of my favorite Monkees' singles. Recorded off of the Tonight Show- very rare indeed.

  • EXTREMELY rare...this is around the time "Instant Replay" was released probably...the reruns were just starting on CBS around this time on Saturday mornings, hence the release of that "Greatest Hits" album...thanks for posting...

  • @StooGP: And that Colgems "Greatest Hits" package is difficult to come by. Colgems tried it again with the two-LP "Barrel Full Of Monkees" some 18 months later, pitched to viewers of the CBS Saturday morning reruns but that set didn't sell because of the badly chosen cover art (a drawing of a barrel stuffed full of monkeys; that wound up being the very last Colgems LP release before Bell took over the catalog) .

  • Peter had quit by then

  • Thanks, I always wanted to hear their tuff with Sam And the Goodtimers.

  • very rare stuff thanks .....
