@naghoumette - I hope Simon isn't actually saying R.E.M isn't a rock band. If he is, a quick listen to "I took your name" or "these days" or "crush with eyeliner" is in order for him. I think what he means to say is that even though R.E.M is an alternative rock band, "everybody hurts" could never be mistaken for a rock song. Now, had she gone on stage and sang "orange crush" or even "stand" there's no way he could have used that same argument.
