Strategically, there was a white flag but the Japanese were not ready to pick it up. They may have seen the writing on the wall but were trying to broker a peace that did not include an unconditional surrender. The bomb eliminated that possibility. Nagasaki only proved that Hiroshima was not a freak occurance. As for the Russians, they were complisant and equal partners in the Cold War and thrived because of it. They just couldn't sustain like the Yanks.

I've never heard anyone before suggest that they were already "waving the white flag" prior to those bombings. The US called for the Japanese to surrender and were ignored, so the first bomb was dropped. There were 3 days between the two bombs, in which Japan DID try to surrender but were ignored back. First bomb was probably necessary, the second was not. So, the presenter is part correct, as are you.

Strategically, there was a white flag but the Japanese were not ready to pick it up. They may have seen the writing on the wall but were trying to broker a peace that did not include an unconditional surrender. The bomb eliminated that possibility. Nagasaki only proved that Hiroshima was not a freak occurance. As for the Russians, they were complisant and equal partners in the Cold War and thrived because of it. They just couldn't sustain like the Yanks.

The most important aspect of the military complex is the money it throws at politicians and states... the government becomes dependent on money from the military not only for their political campaigns but also for the jobs it provides. There is something to be said about being prepared for the possibility of war but spending over 50% of the worlds military budget is WAY too far. Nationalism also plays a role as it makes cutting military spending blasphemy and the person cutting it "weak".

Of course, it's always failed to be mentioned that the country we are invading has people. People capable of feeling. These same people may have been led astray to serve for the "wrong" leader, but non the less, they still feel. We still have to kill them. Somehow you make life sound like it is just barely not crazy. Well anyway you are pretty good at it. Life's crazy, but there's and explanation, but i don't think i understand what it is. You've got a point about the communist "threat" and the cold war.
But a bit off on the WW2 , Japan had no intentions of surrendering before, or after, the nukes were dropped.
Also I just have to say as I always do, the NORMAL bombs thrown on Japan inflicted FAR more devastation than the nukes. I guess people just think oh ma gawd big bomb is evil! instead omg 10,000 normal bombs is fine.

I was a big fan of Davis because he didn't share my viewpoints, and I enjoy hearing an opinion other than my own. He always had an educated and charged explanation of his stance. Although Davis wrote these, it doesn't have the same gravitas for me. Must be in the delivery. This girls just too snarky, too sure, and has no comedic timing at all. It's like she's giving a lukewarm table read, not a polished opening.

Japan was not waving the white flag when Truman gave the order to drop the bomb. Even after the second atomic bomb was dropped they showed no sign of surrender. It took another thousand plane raid on Tokyo after the bombs to get them to give up. A lot of what you say sounds good but you look stupid when you don't know basic history.

@a11m0n You should try reading The United Strategic Bombing Survey for the Pacific War. "it is the Survey's opinion that certainly prior to 31 December 1945, and in all probability prior to 1 November 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated."
The survey was established by the Secretary of War on 3 November 1944 and printed on 1 July 1946.

@ArcticSlicer That was the conclusion of Paul Nitze (1903-2003) alone. Anyone who bothers to actually reads the USSBSG report (as I have) will come to a different conclusion. Of the HUNDREDS of J officials the group interviewed, only ONE used the word "surrender" - and then after it had been suggested to him.

Also though, Eisenhower deserves a lot of credit for setting up the bomb factory MIC machine creating almost 20,000 nukes from just a few hundred in eight years. He also created much of the cold war rhetoric that in some form or another thrives to this day.

Actually the dropping of the Bomb was to prevent the mainland invasion of Japan, and no, they weren't surrendering, the peace talks that she is refrencing were stall tactics the Japanese used throughout the war to buy time. Oh yes the Godless commie threat that wanted nothing less than to destroy capitalism and establish a global communist hegemony headed by a Stalanistic regeme, had absolutely nothing to do with that.

What's the proof the Jap's were already surrendering BEFORE we dropped the bomb? Also, Communism has always been a threat to the US. It has been creeping into this country for AWHILE. Just look at our current state of politics and how far left so many ideologues are in politics. There has ALWAYS been Commi's in this country, and North Korea plus the former Soviet Union are more than enough information I need to believe Communism = BAD.

2. service men don't enjoy killing, its our job, yes you'll see a lot of hype about it wile they are there but that is how its coped with. when they come back a lot of them have fucked up problems because of what they went threw and fucking is a good coping mechanism.

I am neither liberal nor conservative, but if I had to put my money on it, I'd say this woman is a total liberal. Some of the shit she's brought up in here is from pretty far out in left field, if you ask me... we just threw A-bombs on Japan for the hell of it? I've never heard anyone before suggest that they were already "waving the white flag" prior to those bombings. Like it or not, those bombings spared more overall lives than they ended had the war dragged out any longer.

@pumarunner88 It is historically true that Japan was already defeated, although they hadn't waved the white flag as stated in the video. The US called for the Japanese to surrender and were ignored, so the first bomb was dropped. There were 3 days between the two bombs, in which Japan DID try to surrender but were ignored back. First bomb was probably necessary, the second was not. So, the presenter is part correct, as are you.
