Although Ted does not directly say it, Stella appears in an episode and tells the kids "Is dad telling stories again?" But it doesnt make sense for the producers to reveal it in that episode, and furthermore it makes no sense because Ted and Stella aren't really together except for a brief period during S3-4 (Sarah Chalke only appears in 7 episodes!)
