well, even though it's not quite as prevalent now, a lot of jazz organists definitely rocked the foot pedals...it's not just a church/classical music thing...Jimmy Smith for example
with a bass you negate the a key function of the hammond sound which is central to their style. i right? i mean dudes playing bass with his feet and shit, and playing chords and melody, articulation, licks, etc. with his right and left hands, and feet together.
Hammond organs come with a wooden bass pedalboard for the feet, so that the organist can play basslines. Hammond organ bass pedalboards do not usually have a full, 32-note American Guild of Organists (AGO) pedalboard going up to a G (3rd leger line above the bass clef) as the top note (see AGO pedalboard). Instead, a 25-note pedalboard, its top note a middle C, or a 30-note pedalboard, its top note the F above middle C, is often used. (from wikipedia)
The only reason Soulive is anything today is because they DON'T have a bassist. Let's hear it for Neal's left hand, better groove than most bass players you can name.
i think they shouldn't add a bassist cuz the group is tight the way it is right now. if it aint broke dont fix it. neal is insane. hats off to neal. much respect.
agreed. no need for a bassist. and a vocalist takes away from their freedom and puts a new focus on their sound. i like em as 3. (and thats coming from a vocalist)
I totally agree, but its interesting to see how they play off each other as a separate unit from the singer. (Trio=one person+singer). Soulive is dank.
@micah275987 Agreed... Neal Evans is one of the best bass players I've ever heard, and he doesn't even play the bass! That left hand is a gem.
Yes that's right. To all the other's that are wondering, B3 player's never play bass lines with they're feet. If the pedal board is used it's used for a percussive/accenting effect.
The only time pedals are used on an organ for musical line is in church or classical music.
Its a personal thing I guess. I dont like instrumental based bands incorporating vocalists, esp. a tight group like this. Ive tried, but I just dont dig it.
it's still that greasy funk that true soulive fans love, but adding vocals takes away from the magic of this band... for me anyway. It's too controlled... too 'studio' now.
atleast the voice of toussaint isnt really breaking down the quality of the song...and thats can be considered a godsend, especially for a rare group as soulive ;D
Love This Song!!!

a hammond organ has bass pedals just like a church organ right? You can play the bass line with your feet i am pretty sure.

this may be true, but if you look at him, he never uses his feet, but his left hand for these funky lines !

@JanCarlo88 true haha never footing it with the group!

@jazzZjosh123 jazz/funk organists usually dont use the feet for basslines. mostly for accents or if they need to hit a real low bassy note.

It hurt my feelings when they added a vocalist. I was like, dang I'd think they would add a bass player or horn before a friggin vocalist.
toofpick151 3 years ago
really? Why? It's very hard to find someone that can sing as good as their vocalist. They should had kept him; he was very good.

same, as a bassist I always wanted them to get a bass and when I found out they got a vocalist instead, I was pissed.
