Don't be fooled. Teachers make damn good money. Here in Michigan if you start teaching at 23 and get your masters, you can be making 70K per year by the time you are 33, great medical and retirement plans. Every weekend, summer and major holiday off. My last teaching contract was for 185 days out of the year. The rest of the days I was off. They make even more money in other states.

The real question is why does society place such a low value on education and educators? In the university setting it's even worse; the wide spread "adjuncting" of the work force makes teaching at that level--and being able to make a good living--more and more difficult.

Here's another reason why people choose to become teachers:

They aren't very talented, knowledgable, or hard working.

I say that based on my experience with school teachers while growing up. Yes there are good teachers, but they are few and far in between, and how much crap the schools are doesn't encourage the students to be open to these few good teachers.

there were 3 teachers in high school i had that made a positive impact on me.

All other teachers I had in middle and high school were shady, worthless pieces of crap that were just putting time in to get their state pensions.

@leorana2 tenure has destroyed teaching. if people could move from the private sector to better teaching without having to do the financial 'hard yards' of the early years you would see more talented teachers around. talent costs money. why a bad teacher is worth so much more after 10 years of teaching poorly is something that the teacher unions will have to explain, i cant.
