  • this quack of a teacher is trying to make all wrongs right

  • When we have to buy water, energy, transport to big companies, with prices they chose, their is an opposition between fundamental rights; the property can be collective, for essential goods, as it was. Capitalism can be the only response to all ecnomical problems, as communism. The two totalitarian systems failed to realise prosperity and freedom, even in rich countries.Population of the South can't paied eternelly for decisions of the "north" and its "friends" dictatorships.

  • I have literally used this argument against conscription stuff the first person to try to force me to fight for them becomes my absolute enemy I will fight to the death or until I've killed them or they've ceased to attempt and/or conspire to get me to fight against my will for peace

the golden rule being applied here, if I feel some external force is trying to usurp my group's peaceful intent and others aren't sufficient I would volunteer myself

a threat to return to nature

  • @noobler9 of course, that's a bit extreme in daily life, but that threat, albeit lessened in scope/scale, I've had to deal with would be gang beating kinds of people a lot, and I can't stand it regardless, but I have also volunteered myself to get in the way of those people when no one else would as external groups

so the dedication itself, can actually be a good enough force intensifier/multiplier that situations that would otherwise be impossible, defensively, are opened up

  • @noobler9 I guess mutually assured destruction deterrence is my method, lol, like I said, I've had to deal with bullies a lot, and even a mob a few times

I maintain that usurping other's decision towards violence is a return to the state of nature, that one may choose to divest their power of doing violence, but not to abstain from it, and that if this is violated then the return to nature is already committed

  • Concerning C. S. Lewis and his book "Mere Christianity" as mentioned by Chipwhitley274 as a source of proof of the existence of God: (replace # with . and remove spaces and @s)

    w @w w#infidels#org/library/modern/gaunilo2/mere#h t @m l

  • @ninjatoothpaste I think you'll find, as is usual with people of faith when it comes to providing solid evidence for their position and they either have to provide it or evade admitting that they have none to give, Chip has done what is always done, he has mentioned a source and suddenly become stricken with laziness because invariably the debate fizzles out because nobody wants to read a book they know will provide no evidence or logical proof. Well the aforementioned link: ...

  • Provides a short review and demonstrates just how poor C.S. Lewis is when it comes to logic and reasoning skills. Saves everybody some time. It seems to me that Chip is simply rationalizing his selfishness with regard to taxation for national health care and making a damn poor job of it, especially since Jesus's stance on it quite clearly would be the more charitable option. Incidentally Jesus would call him out as a hypocrite. And I'd give him hippo shit, smells better than bullshit.

  • @ninjatoothpaste

That site did nothing to address Lewis' arguments that lead to the conclusion of a God. Ironically the writer goes on about what he considers "shoddy logic" yet displays no capacity for logic and reasoning himself. He himself draws conclusions from sweeping generalizations.

  • @ninjatoothpaste

And my favorite use of "logic" was the line "Had Lewis been a comfortable atheist or committed agnostic, he would not have had anything to 'give in' to."

That would only make logical sense if it has been proven God does not exist. He assumes God does not exist then concludes that nothing could have influenced Lewis to "give in". But if there is a God then it would make perfect sense for someone to give in to the truth.

  • @ninjatoothpaste

I never used God as a rationalization. It is inherently wrong to take what belongs to others without their permission to provide for someone who did not earn it. That is logic which is independent of any religious beliefs. Jesus was for Charity, it isn't charity if it is against your will. It is only a virtue if you choose to give of your own free will. Jesus is also against stealing. So my belief in no way contradicts Jesus' teachings.

  • @ninjatoothpaste

You STILL did not read the book, so no, I have not evaded the answer. Yet you seem to be. If Lewis' arguments were so illogical why did your source not refute the logical arguments Lewis made rather than a few lines that were not meant to be a arguments? And the parts he Did address that Were arguments he basically said. "That’s incorrect, but I'm not going give logical reasoning to explain why.".

  • @ninjatoothpaste

"... because nobody wants to read a book they know will provide no evidence or logical proof ...'

The Above does not make logical sense. If you do not read the information you cannot possibly know what it does or does not prove.

Actually it is laziness on your part. You demand proof I give you an example and you basically reply "I won't examine the evidence but I will reject it because I don't really want to know the truth.".

  • ONE LECTURE IS ONLY 25 MUNITES!?

thats a weird system to me, it ends right after it started, here it is 1,5h!

  • @CutestKittyChannel we have the same thing here and it requeres a lot of cocentration to listen for that long time and the majority fails in the first minutes so 25 min is better by my opinion

  • Now I feel lousy . Thats it , I will sell my home and return all monies back to the natives .

  • оба це, а что там делает на заднем плане певица Пачуля???

  • This is a place for those who want to learn something. Those who don't, you have every right to not wanting to learn. Bentham might support you because he believe that every man's aspiration--no matter how stupid and worthless--should be respected. Stuart Mill, on the other hand, would suggest you to break off the cage of lower pleasures and learn how to appreciate higher ones. However, they both agreed that in any case, you don't have to right to disturb, or alienate, those who want to learn.

  • im in the weird part of youtube again..

  • 'John Trolling' has a very appropriate name.

  •

  • And where is MR.SMITHERS!?!?

  • What is up with all these people leaving hateful comments? Sure, Harvard is corrupt. One would be well to remember that all Collages and Universities ARE businesses. Watch these videos to learn, not to criticize that which can not be changed.

  • Occupy Wall St. should have started here, at Harvard. The most corrupt place on Earth. People claim that this is a good school. It's not. If Harvard had the balls to produce excellent students than those green bankers should have been in jail by now. They're not. What a fucking horrible school. Most graduates now probably work for hedge funds defending their asses. What fuckers. Harvard. Pffffft. Dickheads.

  • @ibukurkristi no university has control over who their alumni work for.

  • request you to request ---there should be not any hell under earth .if any punishment is given it should be given on the earth only .requests you , to request to any souls ,even any molecules should not be taken under earth , sevarages or any hell under earth , for punishment ,any sufferings ,or any kind of torturings .request you to come forward . so far what ever souls has been taken under earth and hells make to bring back on the earth even single molecule also.

  • oh my god how do people sit through these things.

  • @pivotkid85 Imagine yourself playing your favorite game. Ask yourself why you keep playing it ? because you enjoy it! and because you enjoy it, it is not hard to play for several our is it?

So for a person that enjoys philosophy, watching this video gives them the same enjoyment like it gives you when playing your favorite game.

  • what he say is very educational and intresting, but i guess its only for people who have more" complex brain and hunger for knowledge" which in this sense u dont =)

  • @pivotkid85 I ask my self the exact opposite. How can people possibly choose not to sit through these ? Michael Sandel is an excellent teacher.

  • @pivotkid85 Just be thankful that there are people in the world who are intellectually curious. Otherwise we'd be stuck in the dark ages.

  • @prescod

Unfortunatelly our modern defintion of dark has been darkned by the darkners, darkness has not been enough so more darkness has been added...so we´re even more deeply stucked to darkness that we don´t even realize of it, and that is really darknesssssss

  • also ich bin erregt

  • I'm a carrot

  • lol they took up both spaces for education, so long other youtubers oppurtunities

  • England acted like savages( loot ,pillage, kill, displace)

The Indians has enclosed land, naturaly they reacted when settlers disrespected those boundaries, and other tribes respected and sometimes disputed lines and hunting rights. They had borders and IMO the "native population" had rights superceding a greedy nation ruled by the Queen bent on clearcutting all old growth, skinning anything that moved.

To the victors go the spoils, and old, unfair, often overused modus operandi.

    your turn :)

  • @realistromeo That's a very narrow minded and un-justified representation of what actually happened. To say that the English people acted like savages is very situational, there is little evidence supporting this and then who is to say that every English person acted this way.

Of course there is rights between people, but to totally sympathise with one group, criticise the other group, and then not fully understand that group's interpretation of events is retarded. In turn, making you retarded.

  • stuff the government a.k.a illuminati

  • hihi mein hintern ist geil

  • rights must be earned, they're not innate! not in nature and not in humans life.

what humans do is just inventing rights to give it to ''those'' and take it from ''them''. if y belive in given rights you should take that right to make your own opinions and not listen to prophets who reflect their fear of ignorance as the truth. also it is not possible yet to talk about god in any way - except you go to church - and god bless who do! XD

  • go to the top universities in the world and come to england

  • Your natural right to your life is given to you to do with. My the ideas of natural rights you do have the right to take your life. Rights in this respect are considered "anything you can do without hindering another." so your only restriction is upon your effects on others.

  • i believe in fundamental rights, however they are not god given or nature given they are man given and as such they can easily be taken away therefore are to be protected the most against tyrants, just cuz we as people believe they are fundamental right doesnt mean people is gonna respect them

  • This guy delivers a good lecture.

Many college professors just keep talking talking talking.

They should realize that you get a message across when you interact. Deliver a 20 minute segment on a subject that you know is going to lead up to a question (he's probably already thought thru the pros and cons in lecture prep). Then steer a couple of questions (maybe even use a plant to get things going)

Fantastic, guess that's why he works for Harvard.

  • @grahamstull

It's Harvard, they are intellectuals. They shouldn't have to boil down complex questions and answers in into 20-minute talking points for braindead Americans who's only education comes from Fox News and CNN.

  • @Crosmando

agreed. indeed, for each of these talks, far more could be said and they could easily be 2 or 3 hours long

  • Nature has no laws...nature has no rights...or at least when i've walked the street or or some tips I've NEVER seen a single right laying around...or running...or eating. Rights are an idea that we THINK it exists...and sometimes it works. In nature state...we are nothing but animmals and your survival is at your hands capacity to defend yourself and procure anything you might need NOT want.

  • @widyafilan LOLOLOLOL humans are an animal species its call homo sapient did you ever went to middle school? or did your church not allowed you to do that?

  • This is common sense, rules are in place for a reason and purpose DUUUR

  • @danielprovost not that i have anything against atheists. a number of them are wonderful, splendid human beings

  • @danielprovost well dude, he did take in to account the deluded opinions of atheists and responded accordingly. in the context of the discussion at hand, namely rights and the like, the entire debate on whether a god exists or not, makes little variance to the overall equation. Go take your obsessive atheism so some christian song video, where your opinions might find some semblance of appropriateness.

  • @stephenlikespork You just rendered your own argument invalid...you just can't talk like an obsessive Christianfag and expect people to take you seriously and then saying: Oh i know some atheist and they're cool. What the hell?

  • 17/11/11/

  • This isn't a church and you cannot prove god exists, infact theres so much more evidence he doesn't exist. For a Harvard Lecturer he's pretty foolish.

  • Yeah.. So many people had just woke up and used any resources for living and they just took it without knowing SOMEBODY else has the fully right for all the resources that had being used as for claiming their right.

  • @wbdoghr ..It appears your concerns and curiosity in the matter where satisfied with more elementary teachings, and for you that is enough. Allow others to continue there quest for enlargement of philiosphical satistisfactions.

..That is their Right...No one has the right to refuse or restrain that Right....Please, Think Twice before blurting a single subjective general view; that would be the Right thing to do.

who are we who has brieng the human race to earth where are we going

we are living like in a movie the sky is blue and the sun is shining and we advance living in these life without asking what is our past and future for just one moment in our life

  • animals r alive! and deserve the same rights as us! :) right to unhindered freedom as long as u dont use ur freedom to infringe on the rights of others. and if u overstep ur bounds. u r subject to the authority of the one u have infringed upon. and if that being is unable to take authority over u u r subject to the victoms community of friends to determin ur fate! <3 .. (this is my perseption.. me a human)

  • This man should be preaching in a church, not university.

  • I love these classes what subject is this philosophy ? somebody tell me plz

  • @Tdotbwoy political philosophy :D I love these classes too. This is the first class that ever has really challenged my self proclaimed geniusness :p

  • Life, liberty and property... property? this is shit, only because property come first don´t mean that is validy. He is just defending the big companies that only care to the profity.

  • @andretauk You're a moron, John Locke said these things before The United States was even created, his message was part of the creation of the constitution. Back in that time, there was only one Corporation, and since John Locke is a separatist from England based on the fact that the one Corporation gets special rights, along with all the founding fathers, I don't think John Locke was defending any corporations.

  • @crackerz99 We need to UNITE, like (United States and European Union), not separate, this type of thinking is old, we need NEW concepts.

  • these students are sick as hell! get them some coughing medicine pronto!

  • No ví un carajo, no entendí un carajo y pongo manita abajo =)

  • My God, this man makes me feel sick. He is such a wonder teacher, he allows his student to think, I went to C.S.U.B. Where having you own opinion could get you tossed out of school. I would have loved to have Professors like him.

  • if i see this shit again on the youtube homepage I swear that aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh

  • I have a question that bothers me a lot in the time that i've watched this. the question is simple, why does Harvard post this video, because normally going to Harvard costs a lot of money, education costs a lot of money and more important this kind of lectures may not be post at all usually..?¿ i think it's great they did, but why?

  • I have watched around 20 harvard videos, 400more and i can get my degree.

  • Es difícil ser un joven activo económicamente, y tomar una decisión absoluta sobre cualquier inversión. ¿Quién me asegura el éxito en la inversión?

  • HAHAHAHAHA the black guy asleep in the front row at 1:05!! xD

  • The reason suicide/assisted suicide is illegal is because it shows up the areas of society that are being failed, neglected, exploited.

  • Nature allows murder, cannibalism, suicide. Natural population control.

    What of these rights ?

  • @optionsnone

Any of those actions, except suicide, contradicts the natural right to life and even more you own yourself, therefore attacking someone else would be attacking someone else's property.

  • So 30.000$ tuition fees per student are not enough for funding?

  • VERY interesting. Thank you all who made these videos possible.

  • oh crap its back.

  • Property right = Poverty is right

    One person's Liberty = Another person's oppression

  • @stephentsang2000 Boy, you sure sound like you have it all figured out. It's either black or white for you, eh?

  • @vendetta89 Ideologies and the corresponding ideals have limitations. You can't blindly pursue one side without seeing the other side. These thinkers who live in their elegant academic ivory towers often invent euphenmistic terms to justify the unjust, like comparative advantage (unfair advantage), qualitative ease (money printing), sub-prime loans (bad loans).......when you listen to these kind of speakers, you need to be vigilant what they imply in reality.

  • @vendetta89

tell me, for example, how could freedom and equality be achieved at the same time?

and how to achieve real liberty for if you have to rely on land / money / natural resources / property owners to hire you for a job?

  • @stephentsang2000 I don't follow. You've lost me somewhere. What type of equality are you talking about? The fundamental equality of speech and ownership of yourself. I don't understand why liberty is bound by land and money. You are still a free person without these attachments.

    Help me out here.

  • Equality of speech and ownership of yourself? who "invent" these non-sense? How do you "measure" equality of speech? Or is it simply that every one has the same "ability" to speak (which is non-sense cuz your mom gave you that already when you were born?

And ownership of yourself?? what does this bullshit mean and imply?? Who coined this term? what is it that if you own something? And could you not own yourself? Or you own yourself but your government or boss controls u somehow?

  • These thinkers invent these bullshit to mess up with people's minds, and make themselves sound smart and profound. But if you give it a little thought, you will see the absurdity in their words. The French likes to play a game. Say there are 5 people, each of them put on paper what randomly came up in their minds. Then they mix the 5 words together, and get terms like "diarrhoea pen commit benevolent crime", "wife-beating nuns eat bouncing dog", etc.....nonsensical, funny and somewhat profound

  • @vendetta89

For the liberty question, it's simple. How could you achieve genuine liberty for if you have to pay what you have earned to your land owner instead of the freedom to use it on other aspects? If you don't have money, you don't even have geographical mobility, and liberty is out of the question. My conclusion, there is no such thing as liberty in this world, at least at this point of our history in the long journey of human evolution. The guy who invent this should be damned.

  • Well, I am german and I´m not the best when it comes down to the englich language, but even I think that this is very interresting (And I´m not the best student). And I mean what do you thing should be in the education category on the frontpage, if not this?

Gracias.

  • @26libertarian You just need to network yourself for a white collar job. Nothing hard in being a yuppie. A friend of mine is employed at Google Australia and has never had any post secondary education. The people who go to a university for a job just have doctor, lawyer, engineer, and perhaps being an accountant as the only viable career choices.

  • for fuks sakkke.. HARVARD GET OFF THE FRONT PAGE

  • Nobody is allowed to leave the goverment.

  • It would be nice to see this prof go over Fredrick Bastiat's The Law. I really just want these so called smart youth to understand the massive fallacy presented with redistribution.

  • So let me get this straight. You notice another episode, but rather than ignoring it and moving on you actually come to the video to make a comment? Of the millions of videos of peoples' cats and dumb teenagers dancing, you complain about a Harvard lecture? Now that's baffling.

  • @espmh1000 Especially because these videos are on the bottom of the YouTube frontpage, and it still bothers them.

  • there are no rights only privileges

  • Complain about the 1% and education being too expensive.

Complain when they get a free education from arguably the best University in the world.

    Americans.

  • @BTTBWireless This free education means nothing without a degree, which you have to pay and take the classes for, in the job hunting world.

  • @brandunish You go to University for the sake of learning. There is a huge misconception that you go to university to get a job. You go to vocational school to get a job. A subject like Philosophy isn't going to get you a job regardless.

You are learning from some of the best in the world. This is another thing wrong with American schooling right now. No one wants to learn for the sake of learning, instead it's all about money and jobs. You don't need university for a high paying career.

  • @BTTBWireless Although you do have a point you need to remember this. If you pay for university's they have mor emoney, therefore they can give a better education. There is proof of this, look at England and Scotland. In Scotland universitys are free, in England they are very expenive BUT universitys are typically better in England becuase they have more money.

I think this is why the Americans are moaning about free universesitys.

  • Comment removed

  • @gingermaster100 I disagree. I said no government student loans, NOT free education.

Technology is on the rise, there is a surplus of professors in all fields, infrastructure cost is declining. It makes no sense at all that providing a better education should be more expensive. The current prestige system in the academic world was established far before government student loans.

  • @gingermaster100 Pt2 - If the government didn't give out student loans and in turn guarantee the universities money they can raise prices all they want.

If they didn't, universities would have no guaranteed income. They would have to start making their tuition fees competitive, have to start making their university more attractive then the other. The economic sector is the ONLY sector which doesn't have declining consumer cost. The economic sector is in a bubble, it will pop sooner or later.

  • As soon as i saw "sponsored by Goldman Sachs" i stopped watching.

  • @conspiracytheory1066 Yeah fucking kikes...

  • Yes, I understand that the views on this have been fixed but please don't compain, these videos offer a top class education from the comfort of your home, just enjoy it.

  • did any one else think this was the music group?

  • I have one objection about that you cannot give up your natural rights, i.e.your life, your freedom and your property - this would effectively not only disallow taxation (the stealing of money), but would also deny charity - you would have no right to give up your property to someone else.

(basically, taxation is taking my property - or labor - by others, charity is giving up my property by myself)

  • Is this an actual Harvard lecture given to actual Harvard students? If it is disappointed.

  • I just was watching porn and felt like look around on youtube again.

  • i think u have to b careful wih wat u read from the internet it can cause great discretion and put u off track i mean to b neutral minded person u need to read all the facts and then have ur own thought i mean..only then u will understand because sometimes u initiate ur own thought and accumulate on that matter then try and benefit from it but wen the initiating thought was dominateed it had a profound mindset forget the man made theories simple bit like false pretencies but seriously ..

  • som ppl are not worth the bother in one ear out the other then u become wat i say a prime human being..dont get urself involved with such ppl neway why bother its like they are out to get u like hunters some even they can try and do wat they can to upset ppl but the supreme will never because the person knows he/she does no wrong but ppl like that in life are not successful because their foundations are messed up only a few things matter to them in life pitty ppl like that

  • So oopopp, what do you want to see in the EDUCATION section of the front page?

  • @1Bob4All Those BBC planet earth clips. Or ANY pbs NATURE episodes would be a nice change. The Universe series you see on the History channel is good. Hell, I'd even take Sesame Street now.

  • The exact definition of evolution IS inter species and intra species domination. Survival of the fittest! If morality supposedly comes from God then it's not objective is it- It's subjective to God. God is just a human construct anyway.

The evolutionary traits that you say have facilitated human development can only flourish in a system with certain moral codes protecting property, right to life etc.

  • Pomegranate juice ?^^

  • the school system sucks, in every single part of the world. Totally bullshit, I have learned more from the Internet then all the years I spent in school.
