Our decent fix for the active runway or a recent flight had us 60 miles from the south of the airfield, we flew over the airfield enroute before we ever decended. If the cocpit is breached or a hijacking is in place, pilots who know from navy training that you change your trandsponder to 7500.
Between TSA abuses and Pilots that get lost like they were using the Boston subway map in New York City I am glad I bought a new pickup truck with heated seats and a great audio system.
Now I will drive instead of fly.
Fuck it..I may even buy a nice travel trailer too.
Come on, "distraction in the cockpit" is not using a laptop! There are only a few explanations
*Both asleep
*Having sex
*Had some paranormal encounter that shook them up (UFO sighting, seeing something, etc.)
A pilot with 24 YEARS experience who has had training and so many hours in flight would just have a general sense of being on radio, looking at instruments, seeing the time, etc. Something odd happened and we will probably never know it. I'm glad no one was injured.
You're exactly right. It wasn't a simple distraction, it's simply not possible. Thanks for watching and commenting too. And a Happy 2010 to you as well!
As bad as that sounds, it is true. Usually a crew member will wake them up in seconds, but if the entire cabin nods off, then the passengers are in great danger. These guys were just plain stupid and shouldn't be flying at all.
Some of the planes are so automated that once at altitude in the flight vector, the crew has to make a manual input every 15 minutes as a "deadman stick" precaution, similar to subway motorman. Flying over water, cloud cover, nighttime(and most of the unpopulated country) is damn boring.
The FAA/NTSB had a working group recommendation to explicitly allow ONE crew member to nap on long flights.
I prefer a well paid, well rested, alert, happy and sober flightcrew.
You're correct, as usual. The FAA has made some stupid allowances with regard to "dozing off'" in the cabin. It's absurd to allow any crew member to nap, even on a long flight. Many are former military and used to the boredom of long flights and inactivity at the stick. The new avionics systems are spectacular, and while it may be much like driving a bus when you're the Captain, it's a heavy responsibility with lives in the balance. It's not a job for those with routinely heavy eye lids.

yes, at the very least they should be grounded forever. they shouldn't even be allowed to work baggage.

Exactly right. Morons!

@mccainisthrough And they no longer are. Thee FAA revoked their pilots licenes. They will never fly again unless it's in the passenger cabin.
