I am torn between horror and amazement. As I am with most videos of animals trained to do spectacular tricks. Can't deny the spectacle of a bear in skates playing hockey as being an impressive feat. Also can't deny that there was probably a lot of abuse behind getting him there.

So, everyone who thinks that this is disgusting and cruel, should go to bear hunters videos on youtube and let them know how you feel. @11ddiamondr i cannot comment on this bear, I admit I know nothing about it. Bears are a big part of russian circus, but they keep up with modern standards. I have seen them live in the circus in moscow, and have watched a documentary on the couple who trained those bears. The bears live with them in their home. They do not get beaten. in Russia the circus remains a popular entertainment, so it doesn't exist in the same form as 50 years ago. It modernizes and develops, including the bear acts.

Horses were not always what they are today. Long before domestication (thousands of yeas ago) horses were not fit to carry any human, they were simply too small and too weak. They were bred for many generations to become an animal that would be able to carry a rider. Read a book.

It's called conditioning. Which doesn't necessarily involve beating the animal. Notice how the referee leads him to the puck. He isn't beating him, he using his conditioning to make him play.

Please. Animals don't do these tricks without positive reinforcement. Abused animals would be far more likely to be: a- aggressive or b- very very subdued and submissive. The bear shown display neither negative body language in the videos. Stupid animals rights junkies with nothing better to do than wanting to set the animals free to: starvation, struggle to survive or poaching in the wild. Because of zoos and these types, at least some people have interest in conserving these animals.

for those people comparing this bear to horses:
Horses were not always what they are today. Long before domestication (thousands of yeas ago) horses were not fit to carry any human, they were simply too small and too weak. They were bred for many generations to become an animal that would be able to carry a rider. Read a book.
So, whats worse. Changing the entire species through forced breeding , or taking a few bears and teaching them to play hockey (likely having a very favored life)?

It's called conditioning. Which doesn't necessarily involve beating the animal. Notice how the referee leads him to the puck. He isn't beating him, he using his conditioning to make him play.

Train doesn't necessarily involve beating the animal.
I'm not saying they didn't, or that it never happens but you will not know from just this video if it was beaten or not.

Ofcourse someone riding a horse is the same as a bear playing ice hockey cus you know, bears play hockey in their spare time just as horses run about. I think it is pretty obvious they were beating, as they are keen to do exactly what the ref tells them too.
And blow me, i am far from some animal rights fag, in most cases i couldn't give one, i was just responding to the comment made on how the bears apparently "enjoyed this", twat.

A horse is beaten in a way, yes.. Whips, bits in the mouth, and spurs are used to control the animal, and they are "lunged" for hours on end running in circles in small arenas to make them so tired they cannot resist what trainers and riders tell them. Dont polarize the animal cruelty thing by bringing fruit into it, some animals are useful and can serve a purpose to help people, some are just used for pure entertainment.

For all of you who say it's fake are wrong. I just googled it to see if I could see the trainer getting mauled. It was just on the news and the bear freaked and killed one of these two guys and they shot the bear on the ice. It is true.

Please. Animals don't do these tricks without positive reinforcement. Abused animals would be far more likely to be: a- aggressive or b- very very subdued and submissive. The bear shown display neither negative body language in the videos. Stupid animals rights junkies with nothing better to do than wanting to set the animals free to: starvation, struggle to survive or poaching in the wild. Because of zoos and these types, at least some people have interest in conserving these animals.
