Or you can just stick a screwdriver through the loop or arched part (I don't know what it's called) and pull up on it. It will pop and ur done in like 2 secs. It has to be a good screwdriver though.
its a padlock shim that u just made hey umm no your not right at all if u have a lock with Double ball locking you can't shim the lock open. because when you close the shackel the Double balls lock in place so you can't move them unless you turn the cylinder on the inside try it if u don't beleave me.

That is called a padlock, not a deadbolt like your title implies. Deadbolts are the heavy locks above doorknob on most front doors.

There are many locks you can't shim open, but yes this works on many of the cheap ones mainly Master.
