The word is definitely over used, but i think it is mainly over used in junior high and high school. Our senior class rarely used but it is used quite often by the underclassmen. I think the usage of the word is mostly by the younger kids that don't have the maturity to completely understand what they are saying. Unfortunately, I don't this will change with younger teenagers. This is still a great video.
ill be honest i was really about to write "this video is retarded" but then the story of his daughter came up and i changed how i thought about using the word.
All i can say is, dont take everything especially the word retarded personally. I know thats hard to do, but for example; here where i live in the netherlands people use the word cancer alot in a demeaning way. If someone says "Oh that's retarded." and they are talking about something completely unrelated to anything having to do with any mental handicap then it's just a word. The word is definitely over used, but i think it is mainly over used in junior high and high school. Our senior class rarely used but it is used quite often by the underclassmen. I think the usage of the word is mostly by the younger kids that don't have the maturity to completely understand what they are saying. Unfortunately, I don't this will change with younger teenagers. This is still a great video.

All i can say is, dont take everything especially the word retarded personally. I know thats hard to do, but for example; here where i live in the netherlands people use the word cancer alot in a demeaning way. For me this could affect me personally because i have lost several family members to cancer (young and old) but i try to see past that, and try to understand why someone says the word cancer.
Its a habit, and habits arent easily changed. I think your better off just ignoring the word :)

I use it as an inside joke with friends and I don't personally know any mentally retarded people in my village of 2,000, so in my own home with friends I don't necessarily watch what I saw over anything. If I was out in public, though, of course I would watch what I say because you aren't aware of those listening in. I truly pray God blesses your daughter with a long and happy life!

But the idea that the word retarded is a bit hurtful is silly to me, reason being it's literal definition is "too slow or impede progress of" (at least in my dictionary. I don't often use this word (nor do I use the word gay often, and when I do I use it's literal definition) but when I do, I keep in mind it's original meaning. It's not about what the word means. It's about the intention. I think most people that use the word "retarded" are completely unaware of what it actually means.
"Retard" is French for "late", should anyone wonder. So really, it has nothing to do with intelligence or mental/physical condition.
But actually knowing what the words you use mean seems like a pretty uncommon thing these days. I can't count the number of times I've had to correct people that called me a "bastard", for instance. :P
