This might be weird, but I am in love with the way he hits the word, "pouring". At around 1:43. It kind of makes my heart jump with joy, as this whole song always does. :)
two to a four set is a type of music set you play. job was had by god in the bible. if you read the story about job in the bible, it's about how god had basically taken everything from him. basically rufus is saying he was played by danny-boy meaning that he feels like an idiot for giving himself to someone that really didn't care for him or want the same thing from him in the end. well, that's my interpretation...
"played like a two to a four step", it means being played out of synch. It's a musical term, i.e. if the music were supposed to played as four step piece and you played it two step your timing would be out of synch with the rest of the musicians. Obviously used here as an analogy for confusion
1. Being "hanged at the door step" and "had like poor Job in the Bible" imply being tricked rather than confused. Being "played", like in a lopsided tennis match, say, makes a lot more sense.
2. I can't see Rufus rhyming "step" with itself if he could avoid it.
3. I've heard of two step with respect to dancing, but not with respect to musical composition.
@astarintheeast I think you're right actually , what sways me is the idea of the same word used as a rhyme, i guess i always heard step twice, but four set still makes sense as a musical analogy, going to see him live in 3 weeks i'll have to listen harder this time! though i'll just be happy to be in the same room
@astarintheeast he said "four-step" and "had at the doorstep" ..and step and four-step are different words which is why it would pass for okay, don't you think?
i heard this was about a straight boy right?

what is the meaning of the phrase "danny boy"?
islamacros 1 year ago
@islamacros It's probably a reference to an Irish folk song called Danny Boy.

wow, thank you very much, i think that really makes sense. so, job should be Job, shouldn't it?
isn't it a male name(just to be sure i understood)?
JCBigCat 3 years ago
sure, no prob. and yeah, job is a man in the bible. i think the story is called the story of job, but i'm not sure. so yes, it should be Job not job.

I always thought "two to a four set" was about getting beaten like at cards.

only he says "set", not "step".
ethanberlant 2 years ago
no its step, listen closely, i've sat 10 feet from him as he sang this. its step
petesemaj 2 years ago
disagree.
Confusion does not work in this context.
4. Rufus' website has the lyric as "fourset".
But I could be wrong.
