  • i heard this was about a straight boy right?

  • Perfect song about someone pretending they like you then fucking you over...

  • I would turn gay for Rufus.

  • @junior311 haha i love it!

  • This might be weird, but I am in love with the way he hits the word, "pouring". At around 1:43. It kind of makes my heart jump with joy, as this whole song always does. :)

  • @Hawkeye156 it's like he can sing the saddest song and its just his voice that melts your heart!

  • what is the meaning of the phrase "danny boy"?

  • @islamacros It's probably a reference to an Irish folk song called Danny Boy.

  • poor rufus =(

  • I thought Danny was a drug addict lover Rufus had that he couldn't save or something like that.

  • Perfect... perfect!

  • brilliant JCBigCat ! he didn't even cop it !!

  • "You broke my heart, Danny Boy. Not your fault Danny Boy..." this ones for you Dan, wherever you are.

  • greeeeat performance.

  • "Played, like a two to a four-set

Had, like poor job in the bible by god"

    ...

    what does this mean?

  • two to a four set is a type of music set you play. job was had by god in the bible. if you read the story about job in the bible, it's about how god had basically taken everything from him. basically rufus is saying he was played by danny-boy meaning that he feels like an idiot for giving himself to someone that really didn't care for him or want the same thing from him in the end. well, that's my interpretation...

  • wow, thank you very much, i think that really makes sense. so, job should be Job, shouldn't it?

isn't it a male name(just to be sure i understood)?

  • sure, no prob. and yeah, job is a man in the bible. i think the story is called the story of job, but i'm not sure. so yes, it should be Job not job.

  • wow...The Kindest Person Ever on Youtube!

    :)

  • thanks. this song is so damn good!

  • @elricci

I always thought "two to a four set" was about getting beaten like at cards.

  • you're probably right. ?? i've never played cards..makes sense.

  • "played like a two to a four step", it means being played out of synch. It's a musical term, i.e. if the music were supposed to played as four step piece and you played it two step your timing would be out of synch with the rest of the musicians. Obviously used here as an analogy for confusion

  • @petesemaj

only he says "set", not "step".

  • no its step, listen closely, i've sat 10 feet from him as he sang this. its step

  • disagree.

Confusion does not work in this context.

    1. Being "hanged at the door step" and "had like poor Job in the Bible" imply being tricked rather than confused. Being "played", like in a lopsided tennis match, say, makes a lot more sense.

    2. I can't see Rufus rhyming "step" with itself if he could avoid it.

    3. I've heard of two step with respect to dancing, but not with respect to musical composition.

    4. Rufus' website has the lyric as "fourset".

    But I could be wrong.

  • @astarintheeast I think you're right actually , what sways me is the idea of the same word used as a rhyme, i guess i always heard step twice, but four set still makes sense as a musical analogy, going to see him live in 3 weeks i'll have to listen harder this time! though i'll just be happy to be in the same room

  • @astarintheeast he said "four-step" and "had at the doorstep" ..and step and four-step are different words which is why it would pass for okay, don't you think?

  • I've heard that Danny was a straight friend of Rufus that he fell in love with but who couldn't reciprocate.

  • i'd reciprocate :)

  • ahahaha same I would too ;)

  • God, I love Rufus. He has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard!

  • omg I used to have this performance on a VHS tape...I forgot all about it. Thanks so much for posting!

  • Lovely lovely version! Thanks for posting a little more Rufus in my life.
