I've seen Fisting Firemen 9. Twice. But I've NEVER seen anything as gay as this song and video. Good lord, this band made Transcendance, one of the greatest albums of all time. How could they have made this?!?!
Yes, it's not as good as Transcendence. Yes, it's 80's UBER tacky (the video). But yes, it's still Crimson Glory and therefore a lot better than most of the stuff that was out at the time. Plus they had some very interesting songs in that album. Strange and Beautiful was indeed an accurate description.
that's fuckin' good! why did everybody tell me that strange and beautiful sucks? ok, it's not "crimson glory" or "trancendence", but they ruled that genre too!
I think this track was the record companies idea at trying to grab some more of the "hair metal" gold of the 80's.Look at the style compared to something like "Lonely".It's like a completely different band. Not saying it's a bad song,it kicks ass.But a lot of bands went this direction towards the end of the 80's.This is one of the better ones.
I was fortunate to have been friends with the band, particuarly Midnight and Jon Drenning whom originally was on the same Parr Records label as my old band Brat and Savatage. I had many fun and drunken adventures with Midnight. Despite being such an amazing vocalist and a master frontman, he was surprizingly one of the most down to earth people I have ever met.

@famousjohuntube Feel ya dude... Got to chill with Midnight, Jon, Dana, And Ben twice in a 4 day pieriod. Very cool people- Plus totaly kick ass players, pros! They made for one of the best times of my life. A good time to be alive. CHEERS!
It always amazed me how much Midnight and Jeff Lords look so much alike in this video. Anyway, Midnight is still and will always be missed. Metal needs another voice like his, but he was truly an original, totally identifiable vocalist.
@Darandmid and @louisbones ..I think you could both be right. In the case of write-for-hire agreements (which this may have been) copyright nearly always goes to the person/entity that commissioned the work, and NOT the person who did the actually writing.
PLEASE READ!!! NO ONE IN CRIMSON GLORY WROTE THIS SONG BUT THEY DID PERFORM THE "ORIGINAL" VERSION! Here's the deal, everybody: In 1991, Martin Harold Frederiksen & Brian McKinlay wrote THE CHANT & provided it to Crimson Glory to perform. The same year, the two wrote all the lyrics & music for the band OUTLAW BLOOD in which Frederiksen was the guitarist. He has since gone on to be a successful songwriter working with such artists as Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard, the Scorpions, and Aerosmith.
I live just down the road from Sarasota and am a big fan of Crimson Glory.Who gives a fuck if some doofus is worried about right infringement?Midnight is just glad to be remembered for the hard work looking down happy people loved his song's.
I am a fellow Sarasotan and as far as I see it if I were Midnight or Jon I would have no problem with these videos being posted on the internet unless someone were trying to profit from it other than them as a group
How dumb you sound, unless your in the band or their manager or attorney, How would you know who owns the copyrights to "The Chant" C'mon get real...proof.
@louiebones No DJSAHLIN does NOT run Midnights Myspace. I know personally who runs it,as I also knew Midnight personally. This was written by CG as everything they ever did was. Yes they had some help with some material, but Midnight also had a bit of help with his cd Sakada. 95% of everything written in CG was Jon and Midnight.
@knightofsamhain OK, Brian McKinlay & Marty Fredericksen wrote this song, but it was given to Crimson Glory. Marty played in the band OUTLAW BLOOD & wrote alot with the famous Desmond Child (Their names are together on lots of copyrighted material). Marty also wrote "Fever Dog" from the movie Almost Famous! CG was given the song to perform but publish with the songwriter's names. This song in particular was not written by any member of Crimson Glory, but the other 10 tracks on the disc were.
@louiebones Absolutely right,I was thinking of a different song on that CD. Good call louie. Jeff Lords had said that they switched to a more "Hair Metal" sound to get in with a major American label. Once established, they were going to go back to a more Crimson Glory/Transcendence sound. It's a shame it didn't pan out. If it had imagine the material we'd have been blessed with.
@knightofsamhain THANK YOU! Glad someone's finally not trying to argue with me about it, haha! I did spell "Marti" wrong though. Everyone jumps to the band's defense with this song! I don't think it's bad, but in my opinion, not really "right" for CG. So, since you know who runs Midnight's Myspace, can you please tell them to answer questions about 'The Chant' properly? That site looks like the same stuff as the "All Souls Midnight" site which is run by someone form Greece... Same people?
@louiebones Whatever you'd like to know, private message me about it. I can easily get you the answer if I don't know what it is. As for the "All Souls Midnight" site, run by a loyal Greek fan, which Crimson and especially Midnight had TONS of. No this fan isn't running his Myspace,a VERY good friend of Midnight is. I'd like to say it was me,but I was never asked to. Anyone that is a fan of Midnight, should get his Sakada cd. Get it off Ebay or somewhere else. iTunes NEVER paid him royalties.
@knightofsamhain I've listened to Sadaka quite a bit myself. Not my thing, but very creative! The first "CD" I ever bought was the LONELY maxi-single with DREAM DANCER on it. I've been a huge fan forever & the label that's doing the LIZZY BORDEN tribute (which my band is on) is now working on a CRIMSON GLORY tribute. I was offered a spot, but I can't sing nearly good enough to do the band justice. You should check out Emissary - No Time To Lose on youtube & tell me what you think! Thanks!
after doing the research on the net myself this is what I read PERIOD therefore I passed it along...Mid is not here to answer for himself so I suggest you write Jon Drenning, Ben Jackson, or Jeff Lords if it's really killing you so much to know.....go ask them...the answer is out there... take a little initiative brother.....and whomever called me dumb..go look in the mirror...before you make such judgements! peace out!

Strange~n~Beautiful.. one of the best!!!!!
I'm not sure why it is so important to catagorize a band or sound. I was seriously impressed with this album as much as the first two. I don't expect a band to continue to sound the same forever, they need to expand, evolve, and grow. Going in new directions just shows versatility, and talent. I will always love all the music, kudos goes out to them for daring to stay different. According to my copy of the cd, they were givin this song by another band. The rest of the album is true magic & genius
Ok now I'm sure of it; Midnight is/was Mark Vanderbilt. I see several comments of "Midnight RIP". Did he die? If so, how? What a tragic loss of talent...
Please check out my profile and take a listen to the tribute song we did "Red Sharks" for Crimson Glory a few months back for an upcoming tribute CD. It saddens me that Midnight will not hear it...RIP Brotha---you were an inspiration to me and I am sure many many other vocalists
@Tirdfish lolo u what? it was influenced neither by led zepplin or bon jovi this was more of the sleaze style liek skid row, xyz and other from the late 80's
Looks like most of the people are deaf here - Strange & beautiful is a great album, whatever the band name is. Or I must be some kind of freak as I enjoy most of the "different" albums of the 80s bands...
Astronomica was OK too, but the sound really sucks there...
Hair metal at it's best - well, people may be right that they shouldn't have used the name CG for this album. But at the end of the day, music does matter and not the name, the outfit or trends (though they sure were following trends in 91 - but who cares about this in 2009?)
Maybe i am nuts, but i liked this CD much better than astronomica... Midnight could sing country line dance tunes and i would buy it...HE"S JUST THAT GOOD...and as Far as i am concerned "Far Away" is a superior power ballad...as well as "Deep Inside Your Heart"
@Soldier7of7Christ I never said it was influenced by Bon Jovi (read my quote again), if you don't think Midnight wasn't influenced by Led Zep then you are clearly deluded.
I love CG but... This could be a Brett Micheals song and he could have his dating whores do the backround vocals. Hey Brett if you do that I want my cut!!
there was a slow song on this album, I think it was about being on th road. I cant remember the name of it. Anybody out there know it? and is it posted on youtube anywhere?
YES!! I have it, it is posted as MY TRIBUTE TO MIDNIGHT and is called "FAR AWAY" Awesomely beautiful song, such Power and Feeling, along with the rest of the album. Please check it out if you get the chance. Rock on!!!
i'm afraid so. Back in the days when there was a certain creed about hard rock and metal, it was about the music, was about supporting what was shunned from the rest of the world. Touring in vans and busses cause they couldn't afford much and just for the fucking right to stand out for what you love. Nowadays the new bands are for the money and a few old turned for the money cause they wasted the money they made on drugs and parties and lets not kid ourselves they aren't getting younger.
It was to big a change for the old fans to take. Not as bad as everyone makes out but not good enough to bring them what they wanted... mainstream success. Jeffs still world class tough. Brilliant guitarist.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
wow this is such pussy rock. i have the debut cg album and cant believe they ever went down this road. now i dont feel so bad bout what they said about vivas machina. at least it wasnt this. LOL.
I like Strange and Beautiful, but maybe because i´m not a metal head anymore, and actually around 1990 I changed and realized, that heaviness is not a sign of good music. At least this album has a sound that´s 200 times better than Transcendence. It sounded like shit, even though the songs were great.
Yes, this album was a dissapointment. I remember maybe one or two good tracks at best. It was the Masks I tell you all! That gave them the Magical powers to create great Metal!!!!! They were gone after this (1991), a Sad era indeed. That is when all that Grunge crap came out and ruined Good Metal!
Many of the people posting comments are simply delusional. This album is actually pretty decent if you give it a chance. Yeah, Crimson may have sold out, but it's still Crimson fucking Glory!
Remember New Coke...? The lesson here, change is not always good. Original CG was... ...well... ...original. This album sounded like every other crappy rock that flooded the market during this era. What were these guys thinking? They had the potential to be as memorable as Iron Maiden or Queensryche. But now... ...remember New Coke? ...Me neither.
Yes, Coke II was discontinued in 2002, I was surprised to see it lasted that long. For the record, I love CG. I knew Jon Drenning, we are from the same town. My comment was not intended to defame them in any way. I do admire the positive "glass half full" comments though in other posts, but there is no delusion here. No matter how one spins it, a glass that is half full is still half empty. Had this been their 1st album we wouldn't even be talking about them, the Poison fans would be. CG Rocks!
Man I loved living in Sarasota in the '80s see Crimson Glory 1 night, Next night go see Savatage in Tampa...Not to mention all the great local bands...Steel Angel (RIP Jason) were a band that was well on their way. Today some of the guys are still playing (GAC next country star One Night Rodeo) I just had to say it was a great place for a music scene.
I hate saying this, but Stryper was MUCH heavier than this. It is a horrible thing to have to admit, considering the fact that I feel CG's "Transcendence" is one of the top 5 Metal CD's of all time; it was a literal milestone for Heavy Metal, and this was a proverbial millstone about their necks that sank them.
WOW. NEver heard anything with Midnight post Transcedence. THis is absolute sell out shit. Astronomica was solid.......compared to this pile of steaming crap.
this album was crap.transcendence was genius and then the major label got them and molded them into a little turd on the ground.a damn shame.the ballad on this album "a song for angels" is the best song.if the record company would have pushed it maybe they would have sold a few copies.

Nowadays the new bands are for the money and a few old turned for the money cause they wasted the money they made on drugs and parties and lets not kid ourselves they aren't getting younger.

.............of course i meant Jon. Jeffs a great bass player Too.(Gotta stop posting while drinkin beer!!)
gbruceisgod 3 years ago
It was to big a change for the old fans to take. Not as bad as everyone makes out but not good enough to bring them what they wanted... mainstream success. Jeffs still world class tough. Brilliant guitarist.

4august 3 years ago
i think strange and beautiful album is good enough but is not crimsdn glory.i think that is was wrong to release this album after 'transcendence'.
gram551 3 years ago
Crimson Glory went pop metal with this one.... Not a terrible song though... The best thing about this video are those two babes on stage :D
Now where is my Transcendence CD???.....
Prosciutto14 3 years ago
Many of the people posting comments are simply delusional. This album is actually pretty decent if you give it a chance. Yeah, Crimson may have sold out, but it's still Crimson fucking Glory!
progmetal420 4 years ago
No, it's not.
Do you see Dana and Ben in this video?
"Astonomica" was a great release, but I even have a hard time calling that a CG release without Midnight and Dana on it. :(

Remember New Coke...? The lesson here, change is not always good. Original CG was... ...well... ...original. This album sounded like every other crappy rock that flooded the market during this era. What were these guys thinking? They had the potential to be as memorable as Iron Maiden or Queensryche. But now... ...remember New Coke? ...Me neither.
shiejoe 4 years ago
shie; new coke became coke II
Freyja1133 3 years ago

Today some of the guys are still playing (GAC next country star One Night Rodeo) I just had to say it was a great place for a music scene.

the bastard offspring of poison and stryper!.. not what i hoped to hear and see!!!
wsforestry 4 years ago
I hate saying this, but Stryper was MUCH heavier than this. It is a horrible thing to have to admit, considering the fact that I feel CG's "Transcendence" is one of the top 5 Metal CD's of all time; it was a literal milestone for Heavy Metal, and this was a proverbial millstone about their necks that sank them.
thorfinnhrolf 3 years ago
Pure horseshit. Midnite isn't even singing very well. This is by far worse than even Cold Lake era Celtic Frost.

WOW. NEver heard anything with Midnight post Transcedence. THis is absolute sell out shit. Astronomica was solid.......compared to this pile of steaming crap.

Freyja1313 4 years ago
this album was crap.transcendence was genius and then the major label got them and molded them into a little turd on the ground.a damn shame.the ballad on this album "a song for angels" is the best song.if the record company would have pushed it maybe they would have sold a few copies.
