  • Thats probably made in about 1995 or 1996, because 1995 was the year the Pentium Pro was introduced.

  • wtf!!!!!! this server is older than my grandma =)) it has pentium pro!!! 200Mhz lol:))

you gotta buy a computer because this is going to transform in trash.

  • power waste :( but cool

  • I want some old shits like that (and treat them with respect). HDD hotplugin is quite impressive on old computers. SCSI racks were quite rare on mainstream computers.

I use an old pentium 3 with a serial ATA add on card and two seagate green hard disks in raid 1. Totally silent and not power hungry ^^

But I always wanted an old server like yours just for the sound of it xD

  • oh i remember the phrase "wait for it to eject"

  • The money he saves on taking a girl out on a date, he uses to pay the electricity LOL

  • oh my god! what is your monthly electric bill?

  • But will it get you laid?

  • quite a lot of ram for such an old thing

  • works fine ... Oh ;)

  • how did you build that old thing with rocks and sticks?

  • HOLY SHIT A TAPE! !!!

  • @MalcolmLC

    Why the holy shit?

Tapes are still very much in use today...

  • @Driv3th3hiv3 Not saying they arent I just never ever ever ever everrr see them any more XD

  • you should start useing solar panels

  • 5 4.3 gig drives lol

  • i have a dell power edge 2300 with two 9.00 gb harddrives and windows nt 4.0

  • I can only imagine how much 1048MB of RAM cost back then O_O. It probably WAS an arm and a leg.

  • holy shit i can back my data up onto an 8mm tape!?

  • Shit...being a sys admin must have sucked 15 years ago...

  • 4.3GB X5........wow massive capacity... how on earth does the system handle it???.....dam

  • tape, u kidding me?

  • Nice, I have a Proliant DL360 G1 and G2 and a Proliant 800

  • I love old iron

  • Is it me or do I see a fan in the back of the tape backup box?

  • i wouldnt be able to take having a helicopter stuck in take off mode next to me. but nice vid

  • even in 2007 that server was shit

  • miss the "Pause" Key on the keyboard. LOL....get a pause!

  • sounds like >:D angry scsi RRRRRRRRRRRRRRCCCCRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • I used to have the exact same server, but with slightly larger drives. My friends used to call it the "Pizza Oven." I got rid of it a few years back when I moved, but I miss it!

  • lol it sounds like a Harrier taking off... kicks ass though :)

  • @ntk0520 If you think that's bad you should see some of the ultra rare 8-CPU Pentium 3 Xeon servers, they sound like a freaking wind tunnel at full blast.

  • @Dant2142, indeed, I had one of those (an IBM xSeries 365). I'm glad I got rid of it!

  • Nice PC :)

  • omg a tape backup system hahaha

  • what os does it have?

  • @iTech278 windows ... D':

  • Wow. Those old drives are loud. That's a late 90s Proliant server. Pentium Pro old iron!

  • I used to have an Apricot PC much like this, only with 15 HDD's. I scrapped it in the end and used the case as a portable work bench!

  • i have an old compaq storage tower 7 drives in it but i dont have the rest of it LOL. i am trying to get parts now to refurb an old poweredge 2400 server, to bad these drives in teh compaq dont fit it LOL

  • my first real computer was 180mhz P. Pro... with 32mb ram... 2600 bucks!!!

omg a tapedeck!?!? 2007 dude? my laptop is more powerfull!!

    EPIC!!

  • lol it sounds like a a380 :D

  • you can a learn a lot, from this old compaq stuff..

  • wow this is so really cool ! i mean for real wow wow w w LOL

  • nice

  • nice server! wish i had one like that (:

  • nice server!!!!!!! wish i have one like that (:

  • haha wow anyone else see that dino walk by just now lol. Sad thing is lots of people still run on old servers. I work on lots of them in the DC i work in.

  • hows it sad to run old servers? i run a pentium 2 server does what i want it to save money lol

not everybody can afford those xeon dell servers lol

  • @xMandalorex How much "power" does one need for basic Internet, video, and an occasionally windows office? I can see if ur gaming ,, but they DO make Xbox , playstation, and Nintendo, which is more comfortable to use than sitting at a computer monitor anywayz!

  • @Dreambro1

define 'power' ? you mean the systems specs?

well i have a compaq M700 laptop that is a Pentium 3 at 850Mhz with 512MB of ram and Windows XP Professional SP3 all up-to-date i use it for internet and playing music and youtube videos.

it all depends on the ram and cpu really but the P3's can handle youtube office etc.. any lower? you might want to use it as a server, like my Pentium 2, cant use that for youtube etc just for FTP/web/server and game server for a very old game.

  • tape backup!! LOL. Those things are still so damn expensive.

  • Install linux on it. :P

  • LOL nice, Pentium and Tape backup hahaha.

  • I love it!

  • Hi Canadianman000 what do you use this server for ? I mean 21 gig aint that massive is it ?

  • look at date :)

  • it was in 1995

  • These tapes are not regular 8mm.

  • this looks soooooo old :)

  • it is soooo old :)

    and heaaavyyy

we've got a similar version. we had to replace a fan one time. fortunetaly i already asked for somebody to asist me. it broke half through the rails!

  • server just has to work most server are old pieces of shit in the business place.

  • I have a headless server running freenas with about 1TB of storage which is backed up between a single primary drive and a secondary raid5 array of 4 disks via local rsync each night.

I can't recommend freenas highly enough, and I built my beautifully stable box out of mostly surplus parts.

  • Old servers for the win!

    I have a Gateway 930 w/ 2 PIII @ 1.4ghz (about 32c under load an idle) 512mb PC100 ECC ram, 4 9.1GB scsi and 1 4.1GB scsi. The 4 9.1 are in RAID 0 VIA mdadm running Arch Linux. It's also got a 60GB IDE OS drive.

    It's a pretty nice machine.

  • IBM eServer xSeries 330 2x PIII-S @ 1.4, 512 MB Ram, 2x 18GB, not in raid though. I need the space :P

  • I did some recent changes to my setup.

I put the 9.1GB hdds into RAID5 and I'm probably moving over to ubuntu server 9.04 sometime in the near future. Also, the ram is PC133, not 100 ... My mistake.

  • I'm running Debian :) I tried Ubuntu server and since its based on Debian its pretty much the same^^

  • 4 cpu? mine has only one ppro :( and only one HD scsi.. but i save it! and now thinking to what use it for :D

  • Its heavy isn't it! I was given one that had missing parts and had to scrap it.

  • Always good fun playing around with old school stuff :)

  • Nice but too watts :)

  • I've got the same server as you (Compaq Proliant 5000r), It's been crunching Seti data for 6yrs now, and hosting my website.

  • perfect for running a website. you dont need the latest technologhy and power. running a website on home server is a very basic thing requiring very little power. nice vid

  • @ribenababy2008 You can run a web server in the space of a coffee cup these days. An Intel Atom processor runs so fast

  • @ribenababy2008 If you stay away from massive frameworks, it will take a pretty large hit, too.

  • he's not trying to show how good the thing is (i hope)

  • hah that's exactly what i was thinking

  • What is the server for

  • @Speedster159 to get you food and drinks

  • @killyoulikeapig Harharhar

I'm setting up my old Dell Dimension i think it's called can't remember the number for Data since i their is a cafe next to my house and i think they need a data server for their CCTV cams and i have just the right setup....

  • thats one loud SOB but cool though! i wouldn't trust anything on that but yea cool

  • i meant too click the thumbs down there, anyway you dont need the latest servers for basic hosting needs

  • 4.3 gigs, woah thats tiny

  • My ipod touch has more storage and processor than that.

  • My 8 year old Gateway computer has more memory and processor than that!

  • 8======================D

  • It may be old, but you have your server hosted at home, thats cool :) Good work!

  • My macbook pro whoops that servers ass lol

  • How old is that thing? It´s looks like someting from early 1990´s

  • Oh yes, its quite old. It died though

  • @canadianman000 Probably it was from 1996 or 1997

  • Sounds Like a Jet engine! Nice setup B tw!

  • man that thing looked more like an air conditioner lol

  • wow you must be very happy

  • The ol' girl has fried

  • lol fail

  • what made this thing fry?

  • nooooooooooooooo

  • @canadianman000 how?!

  • hahaha

  • I orgasimd

  • Your server is just a waste of expensive energy, 5 Harddiscs with only 20GB wtf???

  • yea get like 5 500 gb

  • Try buying 500GB SCSI or SAS Drives ;)

  • yea its absolutly crazy. now even TB hard drives are under 200

  • i remember when a MB of memory was like 400 bones. that's more than i make a week LOL

  • LOL

  • nothing's funnier than the truth :S

  • Absolutely normal. Although something of that specification would be doing more than sitting in that room.

It a low disk space server but its a high reliability design with RAID 5 SCSI array. It would be something like an AD or DNS Server. Web server at the most.

  • nice man. My 800Mhz Quad Xeon server just took a dive. I miss the old gear =( But keep that one running its a badass

  • purdy cool! you never see this kinda tech. now-a-days! i might buy a modern server just for gaming after watchin this.

  • quad 200 is still only 800MHz... badass lookin thing though :)

  • wow how much was that thing? (its awesome, btw)

  • wow thats an old server! i want it!

  • proliant suxxxx, old school

  • Cool server! That would be a good number cruncher for some of the BOINC data programs. Never toss a computer as long as it works or can be repaired cheaply!

  • Pff. This servers in that big I have. 2 Compaq Servers. But with 2x 450 MHz and 5 SCSI Drives xD

  • i have 5x IBM netfinity 5500 m20 (4x550+4GB RAM+6x36SCSI)+8x netfinity5000 (2x700 all)+2x Dell PE4300 (2x700 2GB RAM)+2x comapq proliant 5500 (4x450 4GB RAM)+some xSeries and 4 siemens primergy-of course add to this streamers, disk arrays, switches and DLT libarys=this is my "hand-calculator"

but production staf is 5x bigger and better

    (dell's and ibm's with 2 and 3.0 GHz)

so that (on video) is nothing...

(this is veeeery old compaq server-but this is good history in IT:)

    ehhhh kids kids.. :|

  • why do you have that ? what do you use it for

  • I was given one of these old things. It had 4 cpu's and eight slots for ram!

Sadly it didn't work. It had been out in the weather and was missing parts.

  • Did you murder the mice once you learned that they destroyed your server? LOL

  • It Died :(. Those COMPAQ boxes last forever. I'm sure its repairable.

  • only repairable if you can catch up to the garbage truck

  • Haha, I Lol'd

  • @canadianman000 ive had more problems with new computers than i ever did with the old ones! These new ones are forever Crashing!

  • all on scsi?

  • wat a waste of money! guys go buy drobo it does the same shit that. that 20 in. tv thing that does. but is small 4 hard drives it self and u cant fuck it up with mice nesting in it

  • ancient lawl, Why did it die?

  • It died because i left one of the rear panel covers out. And mice decided to make a nest inside it. It never worked the same

  • ahahahahah LOL!

  • Try pulling all the drives out mate, lets see if it'll chug away nicely then! Looks great though mate

  • It has 5 4.3Gb drives in a RAID. Or I should say HAD. It died

  • I think he is using RAID 5 , then he could take any of those hard drives , and i think it's the best if you have more than 3HD

  • You cant run RAID 5 with any less than 3 drives. :P

  • Nice I hope to add something like that to my datacenter just ummm more power! LoL None the less very cool

  • my friend has one of those, dosen't use it anymore, it only has 2 of the ppro 200's in it, (quad capable,) same server and everything. Very good server, he ran windows server 2003, just kept running, no problems.

  • Nice server setup. The raid configuration is very helpful.

  • Really nice! :)

  • Oh, where did you buy this? I doubt it, but would it run WIndows Server 2008? Its the only trial server OS for Windows...

  • Not everyone wishes they had one. and if you would have spoken up. i would have given it to you. mice got into it. and i threw it out

  • WHAT?!?!?!? DICKHEAD MICE!!!!

  • A banana.

  • What the hell are you talking about?!

  • I wish I knew. Screwdrivers.

  • lol

  • Only the mouse can shove a fish in there. :(

  • HAHAHA! Where do you come up with these things?

  • Only the fish can shove a mouse in there. :-(

  • There is only but one who can forfill the proficy. Perhaps the newest addition to the moon babies can save us now? Maybe all is lost? Or, maybe, I'm just a banana head.

  • I love it! I wish I had one!

  • what do i need to build a file server for video production ?

  • Message me.

  • Seriously man, parts are cheap these days, you can do a lot better.

  • Install a flux capacitor on this thing and send it back to 2000

  • Sounds like it may explode.

  • dude get over it. i have liek no money. i cant afford to go out and buy a new server. i aquired however an HP proliant LH 3000. 12 hard drives, dual P3 1000Mhz, 1GB ram

  • wtf is this? i like servers 2, but this is old, noisy and slow there is no reason to have this

  • Ahhh, your running Seagate Barracuda ST1515on hard drives aren't cha?

  • dude with 4 p 200s lol you reall shouldnt have that much noise i would suggest you replace your fans with quiter ones on the cpu or dissconect some of the other pointles ones. replace the psu. mines a p4 server 4gb ram and 500gb and it runs near silent. but if you can live with that racket fair enough.

  • im fixing to buy one of those things except mine has 4 pentium 3 1.5GHz each adn it holds i think 4 drives and it has a raid controler

  • only shit, you can get it for 30€ at ebay

  • My desktop is like 5 times faster =\

    200 MHz Cpus =\

  • same! My computer is 5.32ghz (or 5320mhz)

  • you suck

  • ... What's the difference between RAID-0 and RAID-5?

  • Raid 0 is is called a striped array. it spreads data evenly across all the disks in the array. The improves transfer rates and your total disk space will be the sum of all the disks. It offers no extra reliability. if one drive fails you loose ALL the data. In raid five the data is spread across all drive in parity. You get about 80% of the total space, 30% improved performance. And ONE drive can fail without loosing any data. therefor RAID five is more reliable and RAID 0 is just faster

  • Can you do a RAID 0+5 configuration? Of course it would take 5 machines to do that much...

  • There is a RAID0+1 which is a raid 0 but every drive has another drive that is a mirror of it.

  • I think I will stick with my dual dual core Dell 1U server.

  • And you're running Windows on that? Look into BSD or Unix and really do your system some justice!!!

  • BINGO...that's exactly what I was thinking. Even Solaris would make those unknown to UNIX drule.
