The chromatic content, and the harmonies made, in this song are mind-blowing - as for the intriguing poetry, I take it to be a devotional song - Christ is not mentioned by name and I'm sure Stevie wanted/left it that way. The only danger of misunderstanding here is that the listener might decide to worship this artist.
