  • great.

  • I've heard people say they were the first shoegazers. Plausible?

  • I like the dislikes - when this music first came out, you would be beat up for liking this music. The dislikers are the catalyst for making more good music.

This band is like no other. They didn't have any limits. Miost guitar bands I hear now set themselves a LOT of limits. Just relax, and do crazy things! Why not replace a singer with an octupus, and your bassist with a noisy Essex fruit seller shouting.

  • There is a song by The Raveonettes and it sounds almost exactly like this one: "Attack of the Ghostriders"

  • @ZLUGGO You are SO right. Complete & utter rip-off. The Craveonettes?

  • Nine dislikes, I don't wanna know those retards.

  • My heroes!

  • "just so pretty, so real, amazed"

can't stop loving Swell Maps, every time I listen it's like the first time I'm hearing them, although I've listened so many times over the last quarter century!

  • I was a decade or so late getting turned on to these guys. I worked at an independent record store and heard alot of great music. Swell Maps stood out as a treasure from the past that played with an intensity and originality I was always looking for in the new indie releases. Thanks for posting a kick ass song and footage.

  • rare footage indeed. I was a massive fan after the first singles and album, I also remember hotly anticipating their peel sessions - which were top notch, but being deflated by the great ones slightly tepid reception of the more free form stuff. I still love it all and Im sure their day of recognition will come.

  • This is amazing!

  • Seems the singer just died . I haven't chequed it though....

  • I used to work with Nikki's dad at an ad agency in Birmingham!

  • famous excellent vintage !

  • Wow, never heard of these guys before today. A lot of post punk leaves me scratching my head wondering why everyone loves it so much but this stuff is class!

  • niccce tune

  • Spectacular.

  • Top Quality ...thanks for uploading :)

  • can definately hear post punk

  • swell maps swell

  • I have just put up a 30 minute video of Nikki - it is a sort of mini documentary of the band he was in at the time (about 10-12 years or more ago) - quality is not brilliant and I will try and sort the audio quality out at a later date - but take a look

search for Nikki Sudden and the Jewel Thieves

  • swell

  • trippy as fuck. i like it.

  • Jowe Head is always funny. Met him once.

  • Unbelievably Lulu mentioned the Swell Maps in a 1979 radio interview...she was commenting on how diverse the post-punk era had become by that point, citing Swell Maps as a case in point. Adventuring into Basketry anyone?

  • Fond memories of this track and Let's Build a Car.R.I.P. Niki & Epic

  • Fantastic!

  • ニッキ・サドゥンが一番危なっかしくておもろかった時代。ぎりぎり音楽みたいな。ニッキだって。ジョニー・サンダースじゃないよお。

  • One of the greatest hippy-punk DIY bands ever.

RIP Phones Sportsman and Nikki Sudden/Mattress

  • they're aliens :]

  • The Whatever Happens Next... version is my favorite.

  • Another unbelievable John Peel discovery - I still have their sessions with him on cassettes!

  • Can,Joy Division, The Fall, all my obsessions into one, what a criminally overlooked band!

  • nice riff very post punk circa 78/79 in fact i like the whole song they were on Rough Trade werent they

  • Never heard this before. Now I can say I discovered something awesome and new to me this day.

  • I got recommended here by a freaky friend, and I'm sorry I missed this band back in the day!

  • Still as fresh as the day it was made.

  • GREAT BAND

  • Er... 25 years before The Strokes I think you'll find.

  • this mix of this arrogance and your name is quite remarkable

  • no, the first strokes album sounds like this

  • Yeah, but the Strokes suck ass.

  • I have a friend that insists that this very amazing and talented group sounds like Hot Hot Heat. I almost cried.

  • Just listen to Jane From Occupied Europe by these guys and you'll understand.

  • ¡Vaya banda! Piedra angular del rock subterraneo.

  • noise!!!

  • krautrock lives on =)

  • Wonderful band, good days - now does anyone have a clip of Splodginess Abounds?

  • deerhunter does a great cover of this. You can hear like 30 seconds of it on fuse.

  • i love their psycho sounds

  • For what it's worth..Jason Falkner does a KILER cover of this tune on "everyone Says it's ON" (good luck findng it)a very rare double album with originals and covers from great bands like Swell Maps, Monochrome Set, Magazine, Stranglers, Essential Logic, Brian Eno, Just to name a few.. FUCKING BRILLIANT! But this video is as well..

  • swell maps gotta be one of the best punk bands

  • EXCELLENT!

They were great influence for bands like Sonic Youth and the early My bloody Valentine.

  • Love this and love Border Country

  • Nikki was one of my favorite guitarists. That I've never heard another fuzz tone like his. At least Swell Maps are getting their due after all these years. RIP EPIC & NIKKI.

  • bacan , soy hijo de españoles ( leon y santander ) nacido aca

    viste a los stones ??

    abrazo

  • I loved swell maps! can't believe Epic & Nik are gone!

  • joy division is first than this song ??

  • Joy Division formed up in 1977. Midget Submarines is from the album A Trip To Marineville which was released in 1979 but the Maps were playing since 1972.

  • i supossed this sound beyond in their period of time

    rip nikki n epic

  • why in the world is this video flagged?

    who runs this creepy joint?

are you people at yoohootube really that fucked?

take the flag away before we burn it !!!

  • I asked for it to the You Tube Team and they finally removed the flag!!!!! Thank you!

  • fuckin rad

  • No reason for flagging this. What a great band. Epic soundtracks new how to keep it simple on the drums. straight forward.

  • the niggling refrain guitar is like early guided by voices.like minds

  • U did a great job Nik, us fanz really ppreciate it - this band helped s all form bands ourselves, an we neva quite got to where they went, peace, M. PS. Now tell us about the LIVE at the Dresden Power Station 3LP that Rough Trade promised us... :o
