I like the dislikes - when this music first came out, you would be beat up for liking this music. The dislikers are the catalyst for making more good music.
This band is like no other. They didn't have any limits. Miost guitar bands I hear now set themselves a LOT of limits. Just relax, and do crazy things! Why not replace a singer with an octupus, and your bassist with a noisy Essex fruit seller shouting.
"Nine dislikes, I don't wanna know those retards."
Better not.....LOL
New bands mostly have lost the instinct how to play or use sounds like e.g. Swell Maps......terrible snobs who regard themselves as the center of the universe.
can't stop loving Swell Maps, every time I listen it's like the first time I'm hearing them, although I've listened so many times over the last quarter century!
I was a decade or so late getting turned on to these guys. I worked at an independent record store and heard alot of great music. Swell Maps stood out as a treasure from the past that played with an intensity and originality I was always looking for in the new indie releases. Thanks for posting a kick ass song and footage.
rare footage indeed. I was a massive fan after the first singles and album, I also remember hotly anticipating their peel sessions - which were top notch, but being deflated by the great ones slightly tepid reception of the more free form stuff. I still love it all and Im sure their day of recognition will come.
Wow, never heard of these guys before today. A lot of post punk leaves me scratching my head wondering why everyone loves it so much but this stuff is class!
I have just put up a 30 minute video of Nikki - it is a sort of mini documentary of the band he was in at the time (about 10-12 years or more ago) - quality is not brilliant and I will try and sort the audio quality out at a later date - but take a look
Unbelievably Lulu mentioned the Swell Maps in a 1979 radio interview...she was commenting on how diverse the post-punk era had become by that point, citing Swell Maps as a case in point. Adventuring into Basketry anyone?
For what it's worth..Jason Falkner does a KILER cover of this tune on "everyone Says it's ON" (good luck findng it)a very rare double album with originals and covers from great bands like Swell Maps, Monochrome Set, Magazine, Stranglers, Essential Logic, Brian Eno, Just to name a few.. FUCKING BRILLIANT! But this video is as well..
Nikki was one of my favorite guitarists. That I've never heard another fuzz tone like his. At least Swell Maps are getting their due after all these years. RIP EPIC & NIKKI.
Joy Division formed up in 1977. Midget Submarines is from the album A Trip To Marineville which was released in 1979 but the Maps were playing since 1972.
U did a great job Nik, us fanz really ppreciate it - this band helped s all form bands ourselves, an we neva quite got to where they went, peace, M. PS. Now tell us about the LIVE at the Dresden Power Station 3LP that Rough Trade promised us... :o
they second time i heard this record i realized how totally brilliant it was. That guy died after being driven home by a friend if mine who had supportd his band a couple of times that weekend
DITTO! A psychedelic masterpiece! Along with the TVPs they really made the late 70s and early 80's lysergic. Never Mind the Bollocks..bring me the Epic Suddens..
Awesome Nik! I envy you for that. I'm sure Nikki was really a great man. If you have any other material, please let me know. Ps. The video was included in a Secretly Canadian's reissue of A Trip To Marineville CD. Thanks !!!!
great.
