  • but Iam wondering if she get a piece of all the money from the other cover versions...

  • I like this original version most of all.

  • Norman Gimbel and I wrote that song for a young artist whose name was Lori Lieberman. Norman says, 'Hey, what about a song title, 'Killing Me Softly With His Blues'?' Well, the 'killing me softly' part sounded very interesting, 'with his blues' sounded old fashioned in 1972 when we wrote it. We played it for Lori, and she loved it, she said it reminds her of being at a Don McLean concert. So in her act, when she would appear, she would say that. so that started the legend.

  • @catoohey above quoted from Charles Fox

  • One Word:

    ***Gentle***

  • Flack cover peaked at #1 from 2-24-73 to 3-17-73. Nominated as Song of the year for 1973.

  • word

  • SIMPLY LOVED IT!

  • SIMPLY LOVED IT!

  • Lovely and understated....I can see why it was written with her voice in mind....SHE DID write the lyrics after all!!!

  • @jimdivax Norman Gimbel wrote the lyrics from Lori's inspired reaction to Don McLean's singing. Charles Fox wrote the music. And I agree. This "lovely and understated" version is the best.

  • I like her voice, so mellow and yet expressive. I wish she had been given credit for some of the lyrics at least because it was her poem about Don McLean that the song was based on.

  • I'm glad Lori Lieberman wrote this song, but please, this IS Roberta Flacks song. When I was a young teenager in the early 70's I never heard Lori Lieberman on the radio or never heard her name. Roberta Flack made this song what it is. Either way, one of the greatest love songs of all time.

  • @806robbie LOL Lori Lieberman released this song before Roberta Flack but she wasn't as commercially well known. This is the first version I heard; a few months later I heard Roberta Flack's. I like this better because it sounds more intimate and less commercial. I like Roberta Flack best with Peebo Bryson or the late, great Donny Hathaway. :)

  • Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

  • she has such lovely voice.....just the song for her to sing. BEAUTIFUL..AND SO TOUCHING!

  • this is how this song should be!

  • It is my undrestanding that this is about Don McClean, written for Roberta Flack after she saw a concert of his.

  • @rafhenlow it is about Don McClean, but it was written by Fox & Gimbel with Lieberman in mind.

  • @rillloudmother I knew it was about Don, just wasn't sure about who for. I knew that Lieberman/Flack didn't write it. My wife & I saw Don live here in England some 20yrs. ago, 2 solid hours of music. Brilliant.

  • @rafhenlow Lori wrote Killing Me Sofltly With His Blues. Gimbel and Fox created the arrangement, and made a few changes in the lyrics, but the words, for the most part were Lori's. I agree that Roberta Flack and Anne Murray did the best covers of the song. But no one else originally wrote the foundation lyrics to the song but Lori Lieberman

  • @BBQFanNo1 Thanks for that. 'Blues' actually makes more sense. No matter, brilliant song about a brilliant artist done justice by at least 2 great artists.

  • @rafhenlow nope

  • @shaung 'Nope' what?

  • @rafhenlow To what you said. Flack was not the original.

  • @shaung Thanks but already corrected on that one & replied. Great song about a great artist.

  • greatest song,I can't stop listening to it

  • What a beautiful voice, What a beautiful song... ")

  • since i discovered it, i can't stand all the covers anymore.

  • oh brittney...

  • Great to hear the original, it's beautiful. I also had the privilege of attending a concert by the "young boy" when he was young and it was great. Lori's version is so much better than that awful rap version.

  • @CosmicCowhand I liked the rap version better, and I'm white and 57.

  • Non la conoscevo.....veramente bellissima........anche se un po' diversa da quella (piu' conosciuta ) di Roberta Flack

  • reminds me of about a boy ;'(

  • ロバータ・フラックより百倍良い

  • Nice- However It did bother me a little that when you put in a search for the title, other artists come on screen and the original is somewhere far down on the scrolling. I think we should always keep the original artists on the top. Other artists singing the song are awesome too. I am just saying we should never let it be confusing on who the original was.----------------

  • @rockroadtoad I had never even heard her name... that's pretty bad imo. I'm glad someone posted her name in a comment on the Roberta Flack version :)

  • @rockroadtoad

    Always!!

  • Can't believe after all the years this song is still so beautiful

  • Voll schööön *-*

  • What can I say..........perfection,beautiful and best version ever recorded ♥ Wonder how Don McClean felt when he heard it and how it came about?♥

  • I just found out that Anne Murray also had recorded the song before Roberta Flack.

Murray's version is very much in the same style as Lori's original.

  • truely touching music.it realy kills softly

  • Wonderful , easily the best version of this beautiful song.

  • There's nothing quite like the original

  • Lori Lieberman. Roberta Flack. The Fugees........ I can't choose! =(

  • I remember when the song by Roberta Flack hit the radio waves, it became one of my alltime favorites and still is. I read about the story behind it but this is the first time I have heard the original artist sing it. I don't really know why it didn't take off with Lori's version, her voice is so clear and beautiful. But it was the 70's and music was sorta moving past that folksinger thing and into the wall of sound stuff. Both versions are fantastic.

  • @Bombeni This is not the only version that predates Roberta Flack's. Perry Como recorded a version that had a VERY similar folk arrangement to Lori's original. I understand that he, too, did it BEFORE Roberta Flack, but it didn't get released until after the latter became a monster hit. If that's NOT the case then there's not doubt that Como's version was based on Lori's and not Roberta's. if anyone knows for sure, please reply.

    Thank You

  • Best version!.... She has the look of Mona Lisa

  • Who is this boy?

  • AAH! I hate it that I didn't live in this music era! Every singer and band is just so amazing! Damn, now I want to be just as old as my dad..

  • wow ,never heard this version before, yes top notch, like an angel singing.

  • this song is so great I really love it. I dedicate it to Jessica Mendoza, greetings from mazatlan. Oscar Cruz

  • Is this the most beautiful voice or what?

  • UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL

  • love it.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! soooooo beautiful... this song swings and sways in my mind all the time...no words can express my feelings when i listen to this song. thank you so much for uploading . :)

  • Sad, lilting song. So beautiful.

  • she has so sad eyes o.0

  • looks like an angel singing

  • um weird song hah.

  • Simply beautiful. Sung with clarity. A wonderful voice. Thanks for sharing.

  • Simply beautiful. A sweet voice with clarity. Thanks for sharing.

  • " love" <3

  • so I have been trying to remember this vocalist from back in the 70's I heard her perform at a theater in Hollywood and always thought she would end up famous, then never heard much more about her. too bad, great talent

  • w0w....

  • The music market doesn't always reward the truest talent. The radio and record industry are very political & nepotistic and reward slick marketing rather than true merit. The fact that Lori's stellar performance on this song is just a footnote rather than a well-known favorite is an example of one instance when the music business got it WRONG.

  • wow lov it so much...thanks

  • cry cry cry cry

  • Lovely ,had too listen to it again out after hearing it earlier on the Steve Wright afternoon show on BBC radio two thanks.

  • thank u i have been looking for this for a long time

  • incredibly moving

  • great song, original sounds like something you'd here in an elevator though! lol

seriously though get down with the fugees or get out!!! got nothing on Lauryn Hill.

  • Nice to hear that I am not the only one touched by Don's songs. His albums are full of great tracks.

  • Roberta Flack is better !

  • @black1910oo she's just copying lieberman

  • she should have been more famous by this song. she sing so well.I love both this version and roberta s.

  • Thanks for your informtion in the credit area of you upload 65seasons.

  • I had this album but could never remember Lori's name after somebody "borrowed" it. The whole album was beautiful. The original you hear is usually the one you like most. I actually think the liner notes says this song was written by her producer or someone like that after she was describing being at a Don McLean Concert. If she didn't write it, she certainly inspired it. I also like Roberta Flack's and Gordon Lightfoot's versions.

  • cant help but wonder what Don mclean thought when he heard this song , about him, hope they met, and got to know one another , . . .

  • thanks for giving us the truth about this poem in music, we all have associated this song for years to Roberta Flack or the Fugees, and I'm so happy that the author is Lori Lieberman, I hope from today that she's a bit more followed, because she gave us each a beautiful dream!

  • esta cancion me recuerda a mi padre quien murio cuando yo tenia 9 meses

  • endlich die richtige Version gefunden... thnx

  • @chunker0815, Nichts zu danken.

Ich habe auch eine klare Version hochgeladen.

  • great song...

  • the fugees version is better

  • @LiLChucksoflyy

and you measured this using your specially made, fully objective goodness-o-meter?

  • @gr0mithtimon lol, it's better to him. Chill.

  • beautiful soft voice! way better than all cover versions

  • I love that there are different versions- if u wanna dance and bop a little then listen to Lauren's if you want the relaxed mood chillout then listen to Lori's, if you want a bit of soulful mix then Flack is what you play!....love the buffet that caters to all our needs.

  • dieses lied is so geiiiiiiil!

des kann man immer wieder anhören!

  • Have a listen to the version done by Perpetuum Jazzile. They use the Gene Puerling (The Singers Unlimited) arrangement.

  • I heard this version of this song once in the mid-1970s and was never able to find it again until now. Thank you!

  • very smooth voice..like lulllaby....

  • This one and Roberta Flack's version the next year are both great; the Fugees miss the point of this song.

  • i like both versions, this one is amazing it its own way :)

  • even if you invented a melody i dont think you own it i bet they both loved each others versions

  • her voice is like a calm river flowwing in the night

with a full moon in the sky

    thank you for posting this

  • @kaito121 her voice is angelic....simply angelic...i want to be greeted by her when/if i get to the pearly gates!!

  • I hate the fugees crappy version of this song..always loved Roberta Flack's version which I thought was the original..but now

I think I like this one better...Lori's voice is very clear.

  • @midnighttilldawn

Yes totally agree with you on all points. Fugees slaughtered this wonderful song, love Robertas version but this version is just as good ,just sung in a different way !!

  • Wow.....the guitar and her voice go together perfect!!!!!!

  • And, that's Lori herself playing the guitar!

I think Lori said in a written interview, that she was 19 years old when she recorded this song, making her aprrox. 57 now.

  • nice to hear the original (= but the "faked" is much better

  • i love this song this is the original and I think that many people believe that it is not so and roberta flack thanks for raising it

  • wow i never realised the fugees covered this. always thought it was theirs originally. thanks for posting! ...still prefer fugees version tho...2 time time

  • I don't get how Flack "butchered" the song. It was just different.

  • flack did it much better

  • there must be something wrong with your ears

  • ♥♥♥

    GREAT SooNG

  • This is a genuinely GREAT recording.

It is still the best version of the song (which was mercilessly buthchered by Roberta Flack). LL's voice is simply gorgeous. I wish this recording were purchasable as an mp3.

  • @DrNSalmon I love Roberta's version. This one is great too.

The ONLY one to "butcher" this song was Lauren Hill. That MESS released by the Fugees sucked!

  • Very, very great song.Tender and emotional. Also check maybe the oldest version Perry Como - Killing me Softly (also great man voice) or the also great Roberta Flack - Killing Me Softly With His Song live.

  • I love this song. it brings childhood memories back,

  • Hello@65Seasons, I think we've met before!

Yesterday I got a chance to have a personal chat with Mrs. Lieberman........

Waauw what a lady! She's still beautiful and classy after all these years.

  • @istimewa1x: indeed, she always has maintained her elegance and class. :)

  • @65Seasons

Thank you for Posting this original song!! Could you put the Lyric of these song....so we can sing it too!!

Really beautiful song!! Thumps UP UP UP **********************!! :))

  • @RaviandAyu -- I've added the lyrics in "more info" of this video.... enjoy..:)

  • this is the best version ever

  • Finally meeting the original version sung by Lori Lieberman is very good though people prefer of roberta flack composed in 1971 by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel. Inspired by the poem by Lori Lieberman, Killing Me Softly with His Blues, who wrote of seeing sing the song Empty Chairs the then unknown Don McLean, which then became famous with his hit American Pie. and is very deep

  • rien ne vaux la version original

  • The best version of the song from the original performer of it. Heavenly beautiful voice.

  • This is great, but I thought she recorded the song in 1971?

  • perhaps she did the song in 1971, but this song is from her album "Lori Lieberman" issued in 1972.

    65:)

  • esta musica e fantastica me fez lemgrar o tempo de namoro no colegio . quando tinha 14 anos

  • A typical American White girl speaking freely in the "Land of the Free" and "Home of the Brave".

  • .... Happy Thanksgiving Day to you...

    65:)

  • I like it. It good. But... hmm.. I don't mean it in a bad way, but I prefer a different version. It's just that, to me, the lyrics, they are so powerful! And when I hear someone sing it just as passionately I ... just feel it! Everyone has their own ears, what can I say lol

  • douce quiétude et nostalgie du temps qui s'enfuit...qui fait couler des larmes doucement...

  • a oui, la nostalgie, au bord de la mer

  • Nothing like the real version

    Preeetyyyy ^.^

  • Great video! Very well done...

  • thank you for your kind comment, Elloncho.

i also have uploaded an updated version of this video (with cleaner audio).

    65:)

  • I remember seeing an interview with her and I felt her rendition was quite lovely . I also recall how warm she seemed and there was no bitterness at all that Roberta Flack made this a hit despite the fact that Lieberman was the basis of the song.

  • i have fallen in love with this song back in my high school days. i never liked roberta flack's version.

  • love all three versions.

i prefer lori liebermans and roberta flacks versions as songs, but the fugees version gives me a lot of memories

    .x

  • Lovely song, soothing voice

  • in a part, Lori is much better than Roberta.

  • definitely the best version

  • magnificent version. maybe even better than roberta flack's version and that's also a hell of a song.

  • I ♥ this song

  • the voice is in melodoius harmony with the accompaniment, so touching and moving!

  • where can we download the music?? :D

  • AMAZING! I loved the version from Fugees. Now, sorry, Laureen, you are second, coz Lori rules!

  • Never heard of this woman but great voice

  • LOL!!....me neither!!.....after all this time i thought the one by the Fugees was the original one.....

  • @steve1lyons If you want to hear more of Lieberman, check out some of the Schoolhouse Rock episodes - she sang a lot of the songs for the cartoon.

  • Thank you for posting this song,

  • YEAH!!! It's back! Thank you so very much, my favorite version of this song.

  • Yes, by far the best version. Roberta Flack's soulful cover is pretty good, but no one can top Lori on her own song.

  • She didn't compose the song, so it's not "her own song", actually

  • Well, in a way, it is. She say Don Mclean in concert and wrote a poem called "Killing Me Softly With His Blues".

She presented it to Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox, who made only minor changes in the words, changing "Blues" to "Song". So really, instead of Gimbel and Fox, the songwriting credits, should read Gimbel/Fox/Lieberman in my book.

  • @cmulwee001 it's not her song it was written by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel.

  • @Rellizate Oh but it is her song. She wrote it as a poem in tribute to Don McLean. Fox and Gimbel did the arrangement.

  • @TheSilvervan i loveee don mclean :)

  • @TheSilvervan

Right on! Lori wrote 'Killing Me Sofltly With His Blues'. Gimbel and Fox created the arrangement, and made a few changes in the lyrics, but the words, for the most part were Lori's. The songwriting credits SHOULD read Gimbel/Fox/Lieberman. Lori was only about 18 or 19 when she recorded the song.

  • @cmulwee001 covers are rarely better than the original

  • @cmulwee001 You should search for Olivia Ong's version. She sung it best.
