The suspicious looks from the cashier are just somebody bored trying make something out of nothing. they try to make their jobs more interesting by putting customers on the spot. try to stay assertive, thinking of the context of the situation, like 'im just buying some stuff' and 'who are you to question my actions.' i think a lot of people in shops get their daily gossip from these interactions or as a bystander of them.

I read the news on my droid when in a line at a store. It works great. About the cashier and security guard, I guess just try to remember they're just doing their job- They don't have it in for you. Best of luck with it. What do you teach and what age level do you teach?

So I tried to develop a completely neutral, non-stressed-out face and posture. But still, people seem to judge me immediately and decide I'm a prick before they even talk to me.
I am projecting some hardcore negativity, but it's not my intent at all.
The whole facial expression deal is a curse. Instant monster status and alot of work to get it undone, if you even get the chance.
But I do love it when I can hold a door open for someone and they smile.
I get the same thing - scrutiny & suspicion. I don't smile and I guess I look scary, though sometimes I get mistaken for a woman (yeah, not kidding. It doesn't bother me though, not a big deal).
The disdainful looks do bother me, which increases the anxiety and the 'negative vibes' you were talking about. A cashier once told me that I looked like I was "up to something" - I was buying a magazine at the time. So I'm often too polite, which freaks people out too cause it seems fake.
