He is the GOAT simply because he fights at higher weight classes and wins. The guys everyone says are the GOATS (Jacare, and Roger) are heavyweights. Try to realize what it would be like if Marcelo was their size? He still holds his own against them when they compete. I've never seen Jiu-Jitsu like Marcelo's. Roger sticks to the basics and it works for him, but Marcelo creates new ways to beat opponents.
hahaha thats not actually playing there during rolling is it?? that'd be great, even if someone added it its great because its marcelos academy youtube
Marcelo is one of the best ever. I find that when he rolls that he looks as if he is using very little energy. He makes it looks as if he is not using hardly any strength. He is one of the best and always evolving his game but he has been caught in competition. Unlike Roger who submits everyone. the only people to beat Roger are Jacare and Xande and they have to make it a Judo match. Marcelo simply has beautiful jiu-jitsu and no one makes it look as easy as him.
@kanguesso Marcelo's a 5x Worlds champ at black belt, 4x ADCC champ. 2 ADCC Silvers, one of those in the Absolute. 1 ADCC Bronze in Absolute. This year at the Worlds and at ADCC he scored Gold without having one single point scored against him. 23 of his 27 wins at ADCC were from submission. He puts every single class, lesson, and roll online for the world (and opponents) to see and study his game. He has a claim as the GOAT. He may or may not be, but there's no "rightfully so" that he's not.
@WhtMike2006 True, but Roger Gracie has not been submitted in grappling competition since he was a blue belt. He won the BJJ world championships a total of 10 times as a black belt. He has won the absolute division a total of 5 times and from '08 to '10 he submitted all of his opponent with a cross collar choke from the mount. I love Marcelo Garcia, he's one of my 5 favorite grapplers of all time but in the grappling world, Roger is WIDELY considered the greatest of his time.
@kanguesso Look i'm familiar with Roger, his game and accomplishments. You are preaching to the converted & you aren't telling me anything I dont know. For what it's worth, I think Roger's the best gi player & Marcelo is the best no-gi player. I just feel like saying definitively who is better is a bit like ants arguing about which buildings are taller, pointless... There just aren't many cases of anyone clearly being better when you're talking about 2 or 3 of the best to ever step on a mat.
Marcelo, I know exactly what you mean.

@mmapain I think Roger Gracie, Jacare Souza and Fernando Terere would strongly disagree with you and rightly so.
