I appreciate the opportunity to hear this really rather important work from EJ. I have no idea what the video has to do with the music though and if I'd had an acid trip that could even remotely have been associated I'd have sued my supplier!
I never liked this album. But, maybe it was because I was too much into his Yellow Brick Road/Caribou era when I first heard it.
Did ya know...that Elton was the piano player of the psych band, Argosy? They only did one single, that I know of, then Elton left, went solo and the band got a new pianist and changed it's name to Supertramp.
Elton's "Empty Sky" had nothing to do with acid. It could be interpreted that perhaps the moderator of this video himself is still tripping on acid after all these decades. This song had to do with the early, early days of Elton and Bernie's collaborated times together as song writers. Elton would open up singing..."I'm not a rat to be spat on, I'm just locked up in this room" "I'm not a rat to be spat on" was a cry for respect, and "That room" was where it all began for Elton and Bernie.
I don't why this album was panned by critics in the U.S. I loved it. Used to drive up and down the Natchez Trace Parkway listening to it on my 8-track in 1974.
Whoa! Showcases Sir Elton's voice when he was still a young man. And Taupin's lyrics rarely disappoint. Don't look now but there's a dozen million hits ahead for these two guys in the seventies. Cheers!
Heh. Here's what EJ said about "Empty Sky: "It's difficult to explain the amazement we felt as the album began to take shape, but I remember when we finished work on the title track... it just floored me. I thought it was the best thing I'd ever heard in my life."
Well, he really hadn't done all that much at that point, so he may be excused. At least it has a hook and some interesting modulation so it's catchy and (for 1969) easy to dance to. I'll give it a 7, Dick.

The Americans had to wait 'til 1975 to be able to listen to this. Their loss.
