Quel plaisir. Grande classe.
I would give BOTH NUTS to see her perform in concert. Thank God I don't think that day will ever come. I've never been to the Opera and I never thought I would be interested in such, but Sumi Jo has actually touched my heart and brought the stress in my life down so much. So peaceful to enjoy.
the song can be sang by a mezzo and a coloratura. There are 2 options in the piece... so its your choice... :) but even the mezzo would hit a c at the ending.
nope... i think they would hit the c... im not sure if there is a transposed edition of it... well you can have yours done if its comfortable at that key... :)
It was written for contralto...Rossin's favorite female voice. Also, Mezzos were the "thing" in Rossini's day. Then, after he heard (I think) Adelina Patti sing, he transposed the entire role of Rosina for soprano.
In fact, it is for a Contraalto. I have a theory why it is sang by sopranos and mezzos: perhaps as there weren't so many contraaltos, this version was transposed as you say for mezzos whit very dark voices and then to sopranos with coloratura, like Sumi Jo
I'm pretty sure this aria is not meant for a mezzo, Yes it goes low somewhat out of a coloratura's range but the high note is a D I believe and the movement of the song would not suit the heaviness of a mezzo's voice, perhaps you are confusing a mezzo with a heavier soprano fach?
the high note is actually a B and Rossini wrote on his partitura "Rosina:contralto".
Naturally, leggero sopranos like Sumi Jo introduce some variations suitable to leggero sopranos, but I guarantee that the highest note in this aria (original version) is a B, which is affordable for a mezzo.
This aria is meant for a Mezzo. I am amazed that no one has mentioned the Queen of Rossina. Marilyn Horne. No one can touch Horne on this aria. Sumi does a wonderful job though. I do prefer a Mezzo singing the piece because the bottom notes are so much fuller with a mezzo as Rossini intended. However, sopranos have so many wonderful bel canto pieces to chose from. I don't know why they aren't done more by sopranos than Una voce.
Someone said she's trying to copy Callas' version -- it's true. If you compare them back to back, it's obvious, this is a copy -- not an original interpretation =(.
Are you insane? Callas's version is quite different from this. Sumi is copying nobody. She just sang it coloratura-version. and DeFiniTeLy Maria Callas is not coloratura.
Firstly, "Insane" are those who cannot express their opinions without insulting others -- such as yourself! This goes also lloydbaltazar. Very unprofessional of you both! she is flawless, never out of breath never out of pitch and with a strong voice and a veeery large vocal range.....just like a perfect singing-machine!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
she has a good voice and VERY VERY good technic, but why she is trying to sing same way like Maria Callas , to sing this aria ABSOLUTLY like Callas ,like a mirror of her? it is so funny and stupid! but with one exepcion- the tempo ! the tempo of Callas is more more slow (mm)
Please, watch Berganza's version with Alva and Prey. Teresa for sure is an actress, but Jo isn't so good! She doesn't convinces me! Muito seca na interpretação! Paupérrima!
Sumi Jo's irresistable charm, facial charisma, make her, I believe the only logical heir to the immortal Beverly Sills. They both have, besides the definable talents of their profession, that un-definable thing, consumate charm.
I can never decide whether I like the Soprano or the Mezzo ornamentations better! They both show different sides to the Rosina character that intrigue me. The Sopranos tend to sound more playful and coquetish while the Mezzos give Rosina a strength and sultry feel.
Opera Acting is meant to be in words "cheesy" so it is able to be seen from the far distance of the audience or else she would look dead in the face which would not act to the performance!
mmm, you need to read a bit, I was answering to rukiaAndsakura4ever, she/he asked what was the aria at the begining on the video, as you can see i'm not the only one who was answering.
I've never been fond of her in Rossini. That being said, she does some very good things here! The costume and design is...quite disturbing actually. And the user that said she is "too heavy" for this is odd. Jo isn't "too heavy" for anything. Too light for many, but never too heavy. Lol.
She's one of my favorite sopranos. Her French Arias album is brilliant. Also, she did a great recording of "I Dreamt I Dwelt"; it's a little over-produced, but it's really exquisite. She's only 45 or 46, so I'm not sure why she doesn't seem to be around much at this point.
although Callas is BRILLIANT with this, Sumi Jo did a great job, so much so that i prefer her's to Sutherland (which is rare, bc Sutherland is soo outstanding) That'll do Jo, that'll do
I actually really like this. I think because it doesn't tax her high range, she can actually relax a bit, and it shows. I still think you can see her concentrating, and that takes a bit away from it for me. But overall, well-performed with some unique ornaments. A lot of fun to listen to! Thanks for posting.
its amazing to me that when an artist is able to achieve great things technically, people often say that the artist is not capable of anything with regard to artistry in emotion, etc. It is the same in ballet. All artforms where viruosity can reign supreme this is a problem.
Perfect voice , brilliant technique, capable of the most witful and difficult coloraturas - and still it leaves me only admiring her skills. Emtionally nothing happens, alas!
for example, in this performance (and when most sopranos sing this aria) they change and 're-write' a few parts in the faster cabaletta section, as the written notes in the part go down to low G#, which most sopranos (especially coloraturas) cant really sing well. Also, there are parts later in the opera, like the 'goodnight' quintet in the second act where Rosina and Figaro actually switch parts often to facilitate the soprano cast as Rosina to sing a higher part (figaro's part up and octave)
which is why joyce didonato and ccecilia bartoli sound AWESOME on this aria, because they are both real mezzos and make the suff below middle C sound gorgeous. The reason sopranos sing this at all is because the amount of adlib bel canto traditionally incorporates allows them to change some of the really low passages,
I love Sumi Jo, but i must say i prefer her coloratura soprano roles, and as sujinshin points out, even though her technique is superb as usual, her voice does sound a bit heavy in the lower register stuff in the introduction. This is because, little known to most, the role of Rosina is actually originally written for a mezzo soprano, not a soprano,
she graduated from Santa Cecillia in Roma(of course attended Seoul university in Kora too), one of the most outstanding music schools in the world. and has lived Rome Italy until now. her Italian is very good compared with so many non-romance european singers.(especially with those english based) she can speak french well too.
to all of you comparing her to the old timers, STOP, she is a new generation of opera singer where the old style does not apply, she is a MODERN opera singer/artist. pick one current singer that is so unique like Callas or Sutherland. With that said, she is technical almost perfect, flawless with AMAZINGly clear pretty voice that doesn't go wrong. I am amazed by her singing.
This is among the best renditions I have heard. Seen, maybe not, but heard, definitely--right up with Callas and Gruberova. I WISH she'd have gone for the high finish like Gruberova, but her pronunciation is AMAZING and beautiful.
I don't like the costume and the make up because Rosina is inocent young girl and this is a bit much for me. But the singer is good looking with a good voice and good technic.
She is a fantastic actress indeed!!! ( her technique is brilliant, ofcourse)Personally, I love her interpretation the most, compare to Callas ( which is deep real sweet version) and Sills (which is more playful and funny.) However, Sumi's version is a combination of all and gives us more wits.
I especially like that playfulness around 4:28, and her ad lib around 4:42. Callas (and sometimes I think Bartoli as well) is still unbeatable, but Sumi Jo is definitely great for the role... dunno if she's dressed the part though ;-)
Looking more like Carmen than Rosina, but such marvelous voice and technique! Still, I think Rosina should be a mezzo, singing this aria in the original E, without all those upward ornaments.
I agree with the appearance not quite matching the character. However, a soprano (other than Sumi Jo) can sometimes do very well in the role. Maria Callas is a prime example of a soprano singing the role in the original key and being wonderful. The upward ornaments can be a bit tedious, but if the singer knows her limitations, they can be quite beautiful as well.
mah....
Anybody ever heard Agnes Baltsa's version of Una Voce Poco Fa? It's not perfect, but I do prefer it sung by a mezzo-soprano, and I also like Baltsa's timbre. Listen to it if you can find a copy.
Spicy or not ! and who cares about the Lyrics !!! This is by far one of the very finest version. Not to be compared to anyone present or passee! Miss Sumi Jo
If intelligent Rosina's are what you want then you should know or at least she should know, that Rosina is written for mezzo-soprano and that Rossini hated high squeeling soprano's. (I don't) That's why all his major roles are written for mezzo or alto. She does it well I think but ugly dress indeed...
I saw Sumi "live" in concert for the Korean community in Detroit Michigan (and she wore the same dress) where she did the Mad Scene (from Lucia). The dress (on my! lord have mercy!) is certainly for: Musette (in La Boheme) NOT for Rosina (Seville). Minus the dress, I wonder how she maintains the "fireworks" in her coloratura after all those Kim Chee she's been eating (it is a main condiment for Korean food that is VERY spicy)! You go gurl!
How can she sing like that!
She's smaller than I imagined.

for example, in this performance (and when most sopranos sing this aria) they change and 're-write' a few parts in the faster cabaletta section, as the written notes in the part go down to low G#, which most sopranos (especially coloraturas) cant really sing well.

This is because, little known to most, the role of Rosina is actually originally written for a mezzo soprano, not a soprano,
skitzo429 4 years ago
Her voice is amazing as usual, but seems a little heavy for this particular aria.

Heavy? Sumi Jo?

she graduated from Santa Cecillia in Roma(of course attended Seoul university in Kora too), one of the most outstanding music schools in the world. and has lived Rome Italy until now. her Italian is very good compared with so many non-romance european singers.(especially with those english based) she can speak french well too.

to all of you comparing her to the old timers, STOP, she is a new generation of opera singer where the old style does not apply, she is a MODERN opera singer/artist. pick one current singer that is so unique like Callas or Sutherland. With that said, she is technical almost perfect, flawless with AMAZINGly clear pretty voice that doesn't go wrong. I am amazed by her singing.

This is among the best renditions I have heard. Seen, maybe not, but heard, definitely--right up with Callas and Gruberova. I WISH she'd have gone for the high finish like Gruberova, but her pronunciation is AMAZING and beautiful.

this is ghastly! What were they thinking? She's a great technician -- the best queen of the night. But this look --

Actually, if you look at the video of Sutherland that is linked here, you'll see what she might have been thinking...

Actually, I tend to agree with you.

I don't like the costume and the make up because Rosina is inocent young girl and this is a bit much for me. But the singer is good looking with a good voice and good technic.

I admit I think her "acting" is a little shallow, but her voice is just unbelievable. So capable of anything!

What a great performance!!!!!! Such vocal dexterity, especially in the upper range. Besides Callas, has to be one of the best!

May I add Cecilia Bartoli and Joyce DiDonato? The are very very great aswell. :)

I love her!!! Bravo

Lovely at 4:58! I think she's a really expressive and charming soprano!

Still, I think Rosina should be a mezzo, singing this aria in the original E, without all those upward ornaments.
vitellia 4 years ago
I agree with the appearance not quite matching the character. However, a soprano (other than Sumi Jo) can sometimes do very well in the role. Maria Callas is a prime example of a soprano singing the role in the original key and being wonderful. The upward ornaments can be a bit tedious, but if the singer knows her limitations, they can be quite beautiful as well.

mah....

I like it. Don't know why, just do :)
Anybody ever heard Agnes Baltsa's version of Una Voce Poco Fa? It's not perfect, but I do prefer it sung by a mezzo-soprano, and I also like Baltsa's timbre. Listen to it if you can find a copy.

O she "borrowed" some of her coloratura from Ms. Beverly Sills

Adorable! I love this singer: although Callas owns this aria and Anna Moffo eternized it, Sumi Jo enchants us as she did in Doll Song and Holle Rache.
Have you ever heard Jennifer Lamore's rendition?

If intelligent Rosina's are what you want then you should know or at least she should know, that Rosina is written for mezzo-soprano and that Rossini hated high squeeling soprano's. (I don't) That's why all his major roles are written for mezzo or alto. She does it well I think but ugly dress indeed...
ypofero86 4 years ago
No comparison! this performance offers BEL CANTO and intelligent Rosina's rendition.
