Well, it's not awfully different from the other Fire Emblem games (a tactical RPG series). You should give one a try some time, maybe Sacred Stones would be good for a start (GBA).

Immediate access to siege tomes is extremely valuable (since it's unlikely Ilyana will get there easily, and if she does, then probably just one of the three elements while Calill has all of them available). I don't know if Calill can realistically get to S rank on this playthrough, though.

Of course. And I think you exaggerate her abilities greatly, even though she's a good character. She does have the second highest defence in this challenge, after Jill (okay, and Ena), can double more or less consistently and has very good chances to one-round stuff when below 50% HP but that's about it. No horse, no flight, kinda average stats.

She maxes speed quickly enough and will probably max skill if trained till 20/20, but everything else needs BEXP abuse at the base if you want to reliably max out her other stats. Or just get really RNG blessed.

She starts out really slow though, and one should be careful when putting her to under-half HP for Wrath use, because it's unlikely she'll be surviving more than one hit (and even then the weakest one) after that.
