Say what you want about the long count, but the ref didn't do any damage. Dempsey didn't go to a neutral corner like he was supposed to it and might've cost him the fight. The ref should've waited for Tunney to go to a neutral corner as well, but it was of no consequence because Dempsey got up at the count of three and Tunney won by decision.
Primo Carnera was just like Valuev is now a sideshow novelty act that got beat everytime he got in the ring with a guy who knew how to deal with his size.
it's demsey's dumbass fault not the ref. if dempsey would've gone to his neutral corner, which was new rule and was requested during negotiations by members of dempseys camp, so its not the ref fault
wait was this corner rule enabled in that fight? if it was then yeah i guess it was dempseys fault. but if there was no corner rule then it would be the refs fault since why would he need dempsey to go to the corner, when, dempsey was knocked out, he instantly started counting, not telling tunney to go to his corner.

thanx, but this sort of thing happens in every boxing fight, it usually takes the ref about 13-14 sec. to start counting, but ppl just dont notice, until it happens when an upset occurs, it happened in the tyson douglas fight, & ppl were outraged, but it happens all the time
yeah, i know, a lot of these things that are 'unfair' arent really question until big name boxers fight, because nobody really cares, but when i fighter who is supposed to win looses, fans question everything
Hahaha Schmeling the only fighter in history to be awarded the title on a foul. Which is ironic that it happened against Sharkey. Cause when Sharkey met Dempsey Sharkey turned his head to the ref to complain about a low blow and Jack Seized the moment and knocked him out.
The pre-Joe Louis thirties were similar to the situation now, except there was one champion. Many of the fights weren't all that and there was a bit of controversy about: Schmelling winning the title by calling Foul, his manager Joe Jacob's "We woz robbed!" after the rematch, Carnera's phantom uppercut against Sharkey, Baer's injured fist in the non-event against Braddock. The division needed the Tysonic force that was Louis to clean it up and bring back some excitement.
Schmeling had won great fights and stands over all Heavyweights of the 30ties exept Louis: K.o's over Johnny Risko (1929 Fight of the Year), Young Stribling (1931 Fight of the year), Mickey Walker (1932) and Joe Louis himself (1936 Fight of the Year). I think he was a great Champion. His only real big Losses were against Max Baer (1933) and Joe Louis (1938).
The Loss to Sharkey seen here in this clip was a robbery, the commentary ("Sharkey ahead on points in the 15th round") is ridicolous.
I guess I disagree with this. I find the alte 20s/early 30s actually rather exciting, with several legitimate contenders -- Schmeling, Sharkey, Baer, Loughran, Stribling, Uzcudun, Schaaf, Rikso, Levinsky -- fighting one another regulalry without any establishing clear dominance (though the first three stand out).
Today two un-charismatic fighters are dominating a field that is lacking depth, and as they are brothers they don't even fight one another.
Gene Tunney was one of the first technical fighters of his time. Big ups to him

Yes, but when Dempsey went down, the ref started counting before Tunney moved to the corner. That is why there is controversy.

Technically you are right. Check out current fights, while boxer is going to his conrner - counting starts, not when he is there already.
However I am helly joking of this situation. Dark day of sport, when rules kills winner.

Nowadays there is thing called TKO, which if fact is unfair from time to time as well (like imo Klitchko vs Lewis )

@NightManiacs like point counting fights instead of knockout result
but questioning by fans results is known from each sport.
