Usually  most of the malamutes don't bark much, they are more howlers. We always knew when someone was around that he didn't know becuase he would bark. Otherwise, they are quiet unless they hear sirens then let the howling begin! LOL

Question for the uploader or anyone here who knows about huskies or malamutes. Mind my ignorance in the matter, but to make sure, is pure malamutes or huskies identified by their howling? I mean I been told,that to know that a malamute or husky is a true breed they usually howl but never bark. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you for the upload :)

my malamute only howled when she heard sirens and it was so ghostly sounding and awesome and when someone came into the yard she would talk to them. otherwise she didnt make any sounds.

Why do morons have to set up a silly competition between two completely unrelated species- Which is better ? Good luck in 4 th grade. I have two Siberian huskies and they are both awesome- they were bred to pull sleds and such, malamutes are bigger work dogs. My male Sibeis 80 lbs though.

Alaskan malamutes and siberian huskies are two separate breeds neither is a mix of either. Malamutes originate from alaska.... hence the name. malamutes are much larger than a husky and will never have blue eyes- that would mean they are either husky or mixed breed. the malamute breed is the oldest breed in the united states. Malamutes are not mixed with wolf! To sum it up malamutes are just all around better than huskies, probably why theyre so much more expensive

To clear up all of the people writing about breeds and what not, the alaskan malamute originated in alaska, it is named after the native tribe who has been using the breed for thousands of years to pull sleds, help hunt seals, and defend against bears. That is the origin of this magnificent breed

just to clarify you can get full breed malamutes with lighter eyes, BUT if they are blue then it is not an alaskan malamute it is a siberian husky. and malamutes are not husky's they are two totally different breeds, they came from two different places. a siberian husky is used for speed and a malamute is used for strength.

Husky isn't a classification of dog. Malamutes and Siberian husky are both Spitz type dogs. Alaskan husky is used to refer to a cross bred racing sled dog. Usually faster than any of the purebred dogs.

YOu can tell the difference between a Husky, and a Malamute by this. Malamutes have thicker coats of fur, heads are bigger, and their ears not a medium size.

Huskies have smaller heads, ears seem to be errect equal to German Shepards.

Yeah, all dogs howl and bark, but the dogs more closely related to the wolf (Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute) howl much more often. Usually, they howl more than they bark.

Most other dogs bark as their main choice of vocalization, and they only howl occasionally.

(My mom has a Maltese that howls when she doesn't answer the phone... it howls for the last 2 or 3 rings)

That's actually not true. Barking is a "juvenile" trait; a byproduct of breeding dogs to make them more docile. Dogs that howl are typically more "primal" (for lack of a better term) than their cousins. Some dogs don't have the innate instinct to howl. Some have it as puppies, and later forget.

Smokey weighed around 90 lbs. We had one before that weighted 145 lbs but some of that was because he ate too much. They were both vocal but Smokey you could sit and have a conversation with back and forth and he would talk back. It was so darn funny!

Malamutes, depending on breeding, ... males can weigh up to 200 pounds (the "giants"). I work in a veterinary hospital and have a female, in lean condition, weighing more than me at 122 pounds. Another patient, a male, weighs in at 158!
