Agreed.....this could change everything. I have been a follower of Jesus for over 42 yrs. and after reading this book, I see Him more clearly than ever before. I have been moved. I hope I will never be the same and that my passion to know him more will continue and come to pass. This could change EVERYTHING! Thank you John.
Funny how Jesus made it clear that if the hated Him that they would hate those that followed Him. Now was it the common people that hated Jesus? Nope. It was the leaders, and religious leaders to be exact. They were the only ones that had much to lose over what Jesus was teaching. It seems to hold true even to this modern age. The religious nutcases are the ones still doing all the hating. Self appointed keepers of the doctrine. Look at these comments below. MrQuest4truth your a dumbass.
@barlandnewhouse Why are you insulting followers of God's Word by calling them 'religious nutcases' that hate people, and then come on here and call someone a dumbass just because he has a different opinion then you? Is that what Christ called you to do? Or is that something John Eldredge would promote?
Just as Jesus said you will know people by their fruits, I know from Eldredge's aggressive followers that attack those who follow God's Word that his teachings are dangerous and unbiblical.
Come on peeps! If you like, it say so... if you don't, put the book down and go do something good with your time and energy other than bashing this guy. I personally love reading his books and enjoy looking at his perspective into the personality of Jesus. Good stuff.
ummm...such comfort, as I was wondering if anyone else experiences the loneliness that has been imbedded deep inside of me as far back as I can remember ~ No matter the circumstances and who's around me ~ Then I read Chapter 5 of 'Beautiful Outlaw" by John Eldredge ~ Jesus knows....♥ Rich Mullin's knew and it shows in his song 'Hard to Get' ~ Kathryn Kuhlman knew ~ Corrie ten Boom knew.... Do you know? Intimacy ~ Into Me See ♥
John Eldredge leart eastern mysticism and has trained in thearter he is the consummate false teacher laeding many astray·His ideas dont come from the bible."In modern shamanism, geese are also associated with communication, the ability to express oneself, especially through the use of stories. Its said that the goose as a totem signifies the importance of the childhood belief in stories and legendary places. The stories people liked most as a child might give insight in the patterns in their lives"
This is ridiculous. Jesus cleared the temple because of His hatred of sin which was intensified because it was in His Father's house. The woman that wiped Jesus' feet with her hair and who kissed His feet displayed a broken and contrite heart, true repentence of her sinful life drove her to humility and loving reverence for Jesus. This act had nothing to do with a loss of capacity for what "nice" people thought. I highly question the suggestion that a self righteous Pharisee is a "nice" person
1) I have read Eldredge's material and don't see how he promotes vengeance.
2) On the example of encouraging his kid to hit back at a bully. Understand that: when God talks about vengeance/ his wrath - he is talking about death/ murder/ verbal abuse.
@bestofcgs Hitting someone back for 'verbal abuse' IS vengeance. Hurting someone because they hurt you is called vengeance. That's what he taught his son to do.
A physical hit on the face is called ASSAULT. It's illegal in the U.S., and that quote wouldn't go very well with a police officer if he charged you with assault for hitting someone in the face because they 'verbally abused' you.
For some reason I can't picture Jesus hitting someone in the face or teaching anyone to do that...
"Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord" -Romans 12:19 (And yet this man taught his son to hit people who verbally pick on him)
"He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it." -Titus 1:9 (And yet he lables anyone who refers to God's Word as a 'doctrinal cop')
@GreenX37 Often, though, God's word isn't "rightly divided" by those who are protecting doctrine as "cops." I'd bet dollars to donuts that this case is specifically what John Eldredge is referring to (within context, of course). "Sound bites" out of context rarely (if never) convey a depth of a message. All too often people boil down the Gospel to mush. In the end, all they have made is baby food for spiritual babies-- it serves a purpose for some. Sound bites do the same thing.
@saxman42141 I can't say I'm certain what your saying here. What do you mean 'rightly divided by those who are protecting doctrine'? If your referring to them as only focusing on certain parts of a message and not the whole thing, notice that John Eldredge is guilty of that. You can see that with his verse manipulation in chapter one of his book Wild at Heart. He takes Proverbs 20:5 and not only cuts off the end of the verse, but the beginning of it too to make it mean something else.
@JakeNGrace I don't think promoting people to take revenge for themselves is love. The guy might have matured since he wrote wild at heart, though he certainly hasn't condemned that behavior which is clearly condemned in the word of God. (Many times actually). But then he teaches his followers to label people as 'doctrine cops' and to beware of him if they contradict him with God's word... so yeah...
Typing in all caps lock doesn't really help you make your case either.
@GreenX37 I agree wholeheartily.Surprisingly "Wild at Heart" men's groups are still in some churches.Even churches with otherwise solid theology.Recently, the men at a church I was visiting went to see "Courageous", which I thought was overall a decent movie,no resemblence to Eldredge's form of theology. The assistant pastor made a reference during a get together with the men about Eldredge's claim every man wanting a battle, adventure ,and a beauty to rescue, when the men were discussing manhood.
@MrQuest4truth Thanks. Yeah, I think his teachings are starting to dry up and he's not getting to be as influencial as he used to be. I admit there may be problems with the modern church, but his teachings aren't the solution.
