I grew up 15 minutes away from Monmouth Park. Always loved Bob Weems calls. I spent my summer weekends at the track. As for the race itself Hatchet Man did what he normally does in running his eyeballs out. Perhaps not a HOF horse but always a competitor.
I lived 15 minutes away from Monmouth Park. What a great racetrack. Even though the weather turned out bad they were deserved of hosting the Breeders Cup races a couple of years ago. I loved Bob Weems race calls. One of the best announcers in the country at the time although that might be considered biased. He was no nonsense but pinpoint in his calls. And yes, the echo further personified his calls. I had been going to MP since I was 12 and he was legend.
I spent 10 summers of my youth at Monmouth Park with my father. Maybe not the best way to spend the early part of my life. However, Bob Weems was quite the race caller and it's nice to hear his call again. Fred Capasella and Marshall Cassidy and John Imbriale and who can forget Harvey Pack, and the fans can head for the exits. Now if anyone has recordings of his early NYRA calls on WNBC-AM, those would be some memories. Thanks.
Intrepid hero really forced Forego wide on the final turn, then seemed to impede his progress in the stretch. Hatchet Man was the beneficiary of all this, of course, while those two were slugging it out. Thanks for posting this classic.
Grew up 1/2 mile away from Monmouth Park. The Grandstand and Clubhouse were due west from the house. Heard Bob Weems' voice for years. Actually met him and saw him almost daily when I worked at the Track. I really miss the Old Monmouth Park Jockey Club.
P. S. Bob Cicero, director of TV at Monmouth was also an icon.
Thats a great race. I really want to go to the races, but not only is it winter, but the nearest racetrack is emerald downs, which is 5 hours from here!
You never cease to amaze me, cf1970! Another awesome post! I love watching classic Monmouth races on tape, because it was so cool to invariably hear an echo effect when Bob Weems made his powerful rapid fire calls. It was like Weems style was tailor made for that system. If you watch old "Inside Racing" shows hosted by one of our faves: the peerless Harvey Pack and the equally so John Imbriale, that classic "Monmouth Park reverb" can be heard a good 90% of the time.
Wow...You are so very kind! It's comments like these that really keep me going, and renews my quest to keep classic racing/races in the public consciousness.
I totally agree with you; the way Bob's voice echoes is terrific and really enhances the experience. I loved his great call of Ruffian's Sorority Stakes as well. A perfect, booming voice.
Yep, I love the big guy! Even with those legs that were often suspect, and those MASSIVE imposts, IMHO, nobody carried weight and won quite like Forego! He gave away an ASTOUNDING 24 lbs to the winner here! What a legend!
yeah dude really needs to get to Saratoga... its the mecca... screw Churchill..Saratoga is a track of the people and guys like Cf deserve to take it in...
cf1970 should get an eclipse award for doing more to promote the sport thru your efforts of putting all of this history on line than anything the eclipse award ''fat cats'' do..thanks...too bad forego lost here..he very rarely did! love that forego ran in secratariat's kentuck derby in 73 here and was horse of the year 1974 1975 and 1976
Wow, guys...I'm touched by your kindness. I'm merely a fella that loves the ponies, and enjoys seeing 'em run. I really appreciate the support, but an Eclipse award is WAY above what I do here.
I get your sentiment though, and that's all the honor I need! I encourage you to support the other fine race posters for all the efforts they make to make horse racing more visible. Drop them a compliment as well, they deserve congratulations for their work, too.
That's an excellent point you make. Many young fans can stop by and get a bit of a history lesson from these and other fine videos from other posters.
Thank you kindly. I really appreciate the support!

I agree cf1970 should get an eclipse award himself for all of his efforts and dedication in providing these races for us to see.
Well said july2dude !

Enthusiasm and love of the sport is sure evident by Bob Weems in his calling of this very hard fought race !
Thank you for posting cf .
I hope you are having a great day !
