@abo133780 I agree with you about this being a beautiful soundtrack and Howard did awesome work with such an important scene. That said, this is the comment section where everyone with an opinion (however wrong) has the right to post it.
You simply do not create such a score without talent. It's categorically impossible, not to mention the fact that he was sanctioned by the film maker to make such a score. Who else would you go to? Even the best of composer could not create such a deep, emotional and jarring score to best fit the film. To criticize and assume that better could be done is simplistic and judgmental at best. Who could have done better?
Simply fantastic, clever and interesting movie of the 21st century. Who knew that such a silent ending could be so engaging, and partly because of the music.
@bakan1244 In the final scene of the movie George Clooney's character steps in to a cab, when the driver asks him where to Clooney says: ''Gimme 25 dollars worth, just drive''. This music is played during that scene and the endig credits.
I think the version used in the film's ending is slightly slower than this one. I'd like to have that slower version. Perhaps it is just my perception, but there are less pauses between the piano chords on this post. Thanks, though; great music nevertheless....
The change at 2:44, the transition from the uplifting, victorious tone to what I can only describe as a sinister drop-off is step-for-step with Clooney in the final scene and couldn't have been executed better. You see his character's evil, the stuff that assuredly got him his "job," as his eyes sharpen. I've watched and rewatched those last 30 seconds, and it's so slight, but when the screen goes to black, you wonder if the protagonist even came out a winner. Phenomenal 'til the last second.
this music is brilliant and James Newton Howard is a great score composer :) this is another fave composer of mine next to James Horner , Carter Burwell and Hans Zimmer. I am suprised this movie never garnered an Oscar for score also i think George Clooney gave the performance of his lifetime in this film . thanks for posting this piece of score from "Michael Clayton"
@hamiltonjsh You're right... that's weird. Maybe Clooney slipped or improvised with the script, and the director kept it, unaware that Howard had already taken his song's title straight from the script, and not the movie.
@ctcitidalamuie "Michael Clayton" worth seeing, but not a whole lot of action. Reminds us what big buisness can do when it isn't knocked down a peg or two..
@manskin17 That scene was great because of Tilda. I love Clooney, but Tilda was the genius that made that scene work. She was too real. There are lawyers out there that act just like that.
@alpha9mm me too :) im making a house music song out of those first 45 seconds. pm ur email addy sometime. it's not finished yet, but i'll release it for free sometime this year as part of my upcoming SDHC series
Kind of cheesy, I thought and still think. But there was a point to it....he really almost had nowhere to go. Career over. Broke. Nary a personal life.
But he won something back at the same time. The score connotes this perfectly, I think.
Tony Gilroy is one of the most interesting filmmakers working today. Michael Clayton and Duplicity are so different in tone, but similar in complexity. I can't wait to see what he does next
Brilliant & haunting, my favorite piece from the soundtrack (the first 3 minutes especially so.) Curiously, though, Clooney says, "Give me 50 dollars' worth.. just drive." Thx for posting
