@theextremeful No you don't. I would recommend boiling the shell in just to clean it out, but after that you can leave the shell in the habitat. Besides, a hermit crab might move into that one! There is actually one occurrence where the largest or a larger hermit crab moves into a new shell, and a hermit takes his shell, and another takes that one, and so on.

If your hermit crab has not changed shell at all or for a while then that may because you might not have the right size shell. I am saying this to people who's hermit crabs aren't changing shell at all . . . The whole shell doesn't have to be bigger, just the opening of the shell has to be bigger than the opening of the shell they already have on

he is prolly either still ccreeped out... he will get used to the habitat and eat (make sure he has good conditions) and he might eat at night too tho. i thought mine refused to eat too but then i put in a whole carrot, left it in for a day, then when i took it out and washed it, i saw scratch marks on it :) i also caught them eating mango today :D :D it was so adorable!! they eat out of their pinchers into some feeding apendage under their face body things... XD i love hermies!!

My hermit doesnt ever change his shell. He has plenty, but im wondering if i might not have the right sizes or if he just likes the shells he has...Is there a way to tell how big a shell i should get my hermit crab?

@mblaqleejoonluv That's usually a common problem for hermit crab owners. It's always up to the crab to judge which shell would be suitable for it. You cannot help but hope for the best.

@1122ares hermies generally are not mean. Some may take some time to warm up to you, but that is with any pet. They do not smell unless they are unhealthy or dead. Don't listen to your mom, hermits make WONDERFUL pets. If you love them, you should go and get some =) you won't regret it

I'm planning on (right after i upgrade my current fishtank) getting a hermit crab again. Or... maybe 2-4, something like that. Buy a 50-80 liter tank, build a landpart (just like you make your own aquarium backgrounds, using cement and styrofoam) covering the whole backside (60cm long, maybe... 10cm wide) and one of the shortsides (30cm long, 20cm wide) and have the hermit crabs there. And use it as a paludarium, with some yupe of microrasbora in the waterpart.

@strokesgurl264 Your hermit crab is likely eating, they usually eat a lot at night or when no one is in the room. If you have a small hermit crab, they eat so little that it's hard to tell if they've even eaten at all. Some crabs are just habitually shy and may not come out around humans, but try picking it up once a day and gently letting it crawl around your palm to get used to you :)

I HAD a painted shell,then it died,BUT I got 2 new natural shelled crabs.They are far more active.Mitsy is SO cute!!! But she is VERY tiny. Klutzy is HUDGE and he gets scared when I pick him up. Lol!!!
