Trying to dissect Baba and his vibes is akin to the "baseless efforts of the mortal hunter conducting a Recce on The Great Deity: Fruitless." He was such a perfectionist that you can actually hear him counting his beats, so he can catch and fine any of the culprits (musicians) playing out of tune. He verbally cue them, cause he believe the destiny of his sound should on what he hears in his head only. I am sure the only he entrust "solo sounds" to are Baba Ani and former drummer Remi Kabaka.
@loko4191141 remmy was good but tony was the glue for afrobeat rhtyhms. tony allen is one of the best drummers of all time even fela said without tony no afrobeat. his ability to syncopate a groove while locked in the pocket all while double kicking the bass drum and keeping the hi hat open is wonderful. lets not add his ability to roll and switch from french grip to matchstick inbetween rolls and you get a master drummer who created at least 40 different drum patterns ( my count)
@gasdemup: Who may be right or wrong on this issue is totally irrelevant. Baba and Remi fell out huge! And like all pioneers Remi suffers the indignity of comparison. Tony is mad talented as well. Fela being the genius he was knows how to milk his session men. You wanna play in his band, you gotta bring your "A" game. Paul McCartney said that :"Baba ran the tightest band ever in any musical genre." So that said it all. Thanks Bro.
There are some things that words cannot capture. Like the smell of akara or taste of abula. There is no english for eregemiti! This is Magic from Alchemist !
...what a tune, eh? Wonderful "un-Afrobeat" solos by the fearless Lester Bowie on trumpet - and it worked! And the mighty Tony Allen, musical sorcerer, as usual, driving the rhythm with known and unknown tricks. Lastly, Fela - what is there to add?
Some the gods have touched more than once. Man pass man.
Fela is god!

One of the ONLY two purely instrumental cuts released by the great Fela Anikulapo Kuti. This is Jazz at its best whether "Afro" or "Mainstream".
