I find the big problem with the Epi is the cheap pickups...They also screwed up the cutaways (not a deep enough arch) but if you replace the pickups, the guitar is great. They also only had the tremelo on the limited run guitar...a bit of a bummer but I'm putting a replacement tremelo on it. But in all I'm happy with the guitar. I got it for a great price too.
Thats a beutiful guitar. I just bought an Epiphone re-issue and I love it, but I know ther is no possible way it could stand up to an original. Especially one like that. It looks as though its been played with love for many years and it has only made the tone richer.
@TheColourfullUs Glad you could hear it through the overloading audio. You're probably right though - older Gibsons from the 50s and early 60s do have a little extra magic. I've had a Gibson re-issue of the 61 Custom for a few years, and although it's a good guitar in most ways, the tone just seems locked up in it. But there's no reason why an Epi re-issue shouldn't be a fine guitar. In fact I've played the odd new Epi that was far better than the equivalent new Gibson.
