It's worth noting, because of all of the "who actually played what" debate, that Heitor Pereira, Doug Smith, and Kaki King played all the guitar music. The actors do a good job appearing like they're playing, but the sounds you're hearing are not the actors. Also, through very clever editing, it's actually Kaki's hands you see when the kid's shown playing guitar, not Freddie Highmore's hands. Perhaps Freddie actually can play, but it's not his hands or him making the sounds in the film.

I love her music. so I think I'd know. don't believe me? watch the interviews, that's one of the known things about this movie. they actually play the music.
