  • Rökk was born in Cairo, the daughter of the Hungarian architect Eduard Rökk and his wife Maria Karoly. Her family moved to Paris. In 1934, Rökk was offered a contract with the Universum Film AG (UFA) in Germany, She then went on to star in Wunschkonzert a Nazi propaganda film. Rokk was talented but she was not German. Rokk chose to live and entertain in Germany and therefore was implicit in supporting the Nazi propaganda machine. It does not make her a Nazi but she chose to collaborate.

  • She was a European performer at the times the nazis dominated , doesnt make her a Nazi. As a Hungarian choices were limited too

  • @rhys1705 You are absolutely right. Dancing in one's own country when a particular political party is in power does not make you a member of that party; just as dancing in the States does not determine whether you are a republican or democrat.

  • Nazi Nazi Nazi...... u all brainwached by the Alied.

  • Симпатишно

  • The difference between Marika Rokk and Ruby Keeler is that Rokk could sing and dance. Keeler couldn't.

  • @cascol Another difference is that Keeler did not make films for the Nazis

  • @goatface1000

    Stupid racist comment.

  • @mrktyb So being anti Nazi is racist?

  • thanjs for the retrunung comment companys likr ihf and time warner mgm ua are rather biased against light entetaiment german film classic so they only sell the millitary propaganda types only for the fast dollar i so no body in usa know joahnne or marika just hans alber and lennie rienfanstahl dpaending upan popualr film classics only can lead to ecinimical burn out and the classic are no ,onger enjoyed classics have to be treated like wine a sip at a time these companys in usa are greedy

  • Жалко только сиськи у неё маленькие...

  • Мари Карок типичная представительница , нациской пропаганды

  • She is MAGNIFICENT! I´m glad to know her here in Youtube: thank you very much for showing her for all us.

  • What a special talented lady she was! It's nice to have such a kind of video to watch, thus a lot of young people will see what it was all about being really a Star nearly 70 years ago!

  • It's a fabulous production number, but was also to some extent the end of something in German cinema. A few weeks after Hallo Janine was premiered, WW2 began. The Nazis banned American films, and German musicals were never again quite so snappy as this. That said, 'Die Frau Meiner Traueme' from 1944 is well worth seeing. And Marika was, quite simply, a star

  • ever see immer nur du or carnival der liebe, or rosen in tyrol, and there was one with heesters and waldmuller that was very good you need to see these buzzbound

  • I've seen most of the Rokk movies that are available on dvd. My favourite with Lizzi Waldmuller however is Bel Ami...that's a wonderful film

  • Rosen in Tyrol is sweet, but rather 'volkisch' - and based on the operetta Der Vogelhandler..I have Immer nur du, Die Frau Meiner Traume, Frauen Sind Doch Bessere Dipolomaten, Gasparone and Kora Terry on video or DVD. For me though Hallo Janine is the best of her films, musically.

  • i would say that hab mich lieb was the best, with hallo janine her second

  • I had no idea I shared my name with someone so talented.

  • Mit diesem Film von 1939, schaffte Marika Rökk den endgültigen Aufstieg zum deutschen Revuefilmstar der damalgien Zeit.

  • Thanks so much for posting this! Any chance that you could post the entire finale sequence, including the singing of Musik! Musik! Musik!? Thanks again.

  • So even while the Nazis are denouncing the USA, they're happily watching movies like this, which are 100% identical to what Hollywood was producing.

  • You know good film just translates no matter what someone's ideology is. I think it's okay to just like something based on it's artistic merit, regardless of one's political stance.

This actress/singer/dancer is really talented from the tiny clips I've seen. I had no clue they had so many HUGE dance musical production numbers that side of the pond.

Gosh I love YouTube for being able to help archive really wonderful snippets of history like this.

  • Oh my God, she is wondeful! Thanks for posting this!

  • "Hallo Janine" ist, wie ich finde, einer der besten Rökk-Filme. :-)

  • Rokk is a much better dancer than Keeler, but it is Keeler's earthiness that makes her so charming. Keeler had something that Rokk did not: Busby Berkeley.

  • In a words, WOW! Read about Hallo Janine in The UFA Story, but had no idea it was so good. Who'd of thunk it! Are any Marika Rokk musicals available on DVD? Would love to have them.

  • "Musik, Musik, Musik" and what great dancing by Marika Roekk. Such agility and even acrobatics. I don't think Eleanor Powell had that ability, and I know Ruby Keeler definitely didn't. The way the tune morphs into Cuban rhythm is loads of fun, too.

  • Roekk is remarkable indeed, much better than Keeler (or Ginger Rogers) - but not quite up to Eleanor Powell's standard.

  • Ruby Keeler ? mmm....I think Marika Rokk was a much better dancer than that..;she fashioned herself much more after Eleanor Powell. There should be more clips of Marika in her later(post war) career...she danced untill she was well in her 8O's and kept in great shape..many television appearance must be somewere out there..;anyone ?

  • This is brilliant!

  • This movie - like many others from Deutschland especially from the war years (I just read on Wikipedia, this was from 1939) - seems to contains several - unintended or quite intended - messages. Does anyone realize ?

  • Thank you SOOOO much for posting this! It got me totally into Marika Rokk movies! I love them! She is SUCH a good dancer and singer! Her style really is a lot like Ruby Keeler's.

  • I like your vid clip and I've rated it as awesome. I've done another video clip on some old cigarette cards of 1930's movie stars, including: Jeanette MacDonald, Bing Crosby, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo,Johnny Weismuller, Gary Cooper and Carole Lombard.

  • The song to the movie was released under the name:"Ich brauche keine Millionen"(German) Free English Translation:"I don't need millions(Money!!)"

  • A part of this number was used in the amazing documentary 'Hitler's Hit Parade.' Thanks to you, we can see there was a heck of a lot more to this number!

  • I am absolutely amazed! The music swings hot, ...considering this was made, no doubt, in the late '30's in Nazi Germany!

  • This is really a fun video.
