Second Life is free to use, and there are lots of freebies inworld. I dont thing there are free mermaid stuff (you can buy most things for around $1US though :P)

Lol you can Chat in SL...so its sort of a chatroom (or you can just look around, its really up to you).

it's like bewteen the sims and a chat room combine. it's pretty cool i play it all th time it's fun, it can be confusing when you first start. but it gets easy as you go

I got the tail and animations but how the heck do I use them? It says to wear it and say ao hide but that didn't work

For the AO, just wear it and it should take over (you will hover in the air with your legs together and toes pointed). If this doesnt work, make sure that you are not wearing another AO device (like ZHAO or something). Try saying "ao on" and "ao reset" in Chat.
