i remember in the early 90's when NPR announced that Larry Kert, the actor who originated the roll of Tony in WSS had passed away from AIDS they ended the segment with this song........ still makes me cry thinking about it.
In the original 1957 production this was sung by Consuelo (Reri Grist). See also Reri Grist's original 1957 recording of this song here on Youtube. Only later it was changed into a duet for Tony and Maria.
Reri is one of those rare specimens of women that should be cloned, if the technology and times would permit such breakthrough... her legacy shouldn't be forgotten. She's such an inspiration, she made me cry...
Francis.... THANK YOU for sharing this. It brought tears to my eyes... Chita, Carol, Reri. Wow!!! (you are an excellent hoofer yourself- are you in anything currently??) Please keep Posting 2 videos are no enough.
This is a great moment to see Reri Grist and her castmates from the original production. Although, I believe Ms. Grist was "marking" her solo part as we singers often do during rehearsals, at 75 she still sounds youthful, and you can hear the lovely coloratura quality she had in her prime.
Now that was history on film!!
