In, the fall of 1983, I was a freshman at IU living in Collins. They showed Breaking Away in the cafeteria. It was the greatest class I had all semester.
You know how much people pay for those Corvettes nowadays.......I can't look at old movies anymore and not think about all those "junkers" that have made many people very rich for just holding on for ten extra years.
This movie is one of those childhood memories I hold on to so tightly. It's why I started riding bikes religiously. They just don't make them like this for kids/teens anymore. (Never saw this marketed on a Happy Meal. Admit it.)
The highway biking scene is my favorite. I also love when the dad is listening to the game on the radio then rushes to the race. Something so sweet about the way he was shy about cheering for his son.
Doesn't hurt either that Dennis Quaid was one hottie then.
@Violethaze5 I love the scene when he comes home from losing the Italian race and walks in the door and says 'Daddy' then goes to hug his father. Really touching scene.
My parents took me and a bunch of my friends to see this when I was in second grade for my birthday. The next day we we ALL on our bikes hauling ass and trying to speak with italian accents. Those were the days.
The Whole movie is a series of wonderful 2-3 minutes scenes that each tell a story while weaving the bigger plot along. The special effects are out of this world as well, such as a finger stuck in a bowling ball stealing one scene, a towel wrapped around a fist steals another as does a bicycle hand pump, and who would have ever thought that a bloody forehead would elicit more cringing than dozen's of "meaningless" deaths in other movies.
So true! Fabulous, fabulous movie. With fantastic lines throughout. 'It was right along here I lost all interest in life.' Troubled by the situation in the Middle East. French fries, passport, fellini/Jake, he was as normal as apple pie. Delightful.
Ditto! When it came out it was so little known. I have personally made at least 25 people watch Breaking Away. I used to rent a VCR and the movie and share it in the dorms in college.
It's a damn crime that Paul Dooley wasn't even nominated for Best Supporting Actor for this performance. He'll always be an Oscar winner in my eyes, and "Breaking Away" will always be in my all-time top-ten list.
I have been saying this for years. REFUND>>>>???REFUND????REFUND!!!!! and my coworkers dont get it. Thank you so much for posting. They all nearly pissed their pants after seing this....Shorten it up to "we ar poor but we are honest"....that would take thirty seconds off the vid and be more "office friendly". Thanks again! :)
Of course, if they knew how valuable that car would become, the buyer wouldn't want a refund and the seller wouldn't have sold it to begin with! It'd be like passing up Microsoft stock back in the early 90's! Born and raised in Bloomington..great movie. My barber through high school was located in that parking lot!
"Refund?" is my favorite word in that movie, and Breaking Away is my favorite sports movie. I came to your clip while looking for the motorpacing scene with the Cinzano truck, probably my favorite sports scene of any sports flick.
But the clip is gone! Could you post it?
Do that and I'll send you a clip of anything you want in Manhattan.
... should make every top 100 list. There's nothing ground breaking here, but the movie has not a single flaw; it's a perfect movie. Unfortunately they rarely make movies like this anymore, and if they do they are not shown in the multiplexes. But we're sure to get Transformers II.
@koishooter You're right. A film like this would be hard pressed to turn a profit today, even with a tiny budget. It would probably be an "Indie" flick. IMO, this rather obscure & underrated little gem of a film is ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ , all the way! It is all about "the story". No mega-million $ budget, or fancy special FX. Sadly, they don't many/enough movies like this today. Actually, this would be a good candidate for a remake. The coming of age & cycling themes are sorta timeless.

"Papa, do you know that in Italian "fly" is "mosca"?
Dooley responds, "Do you know in English it's PEST!" as he smacks the flyswatter on the kitchen table.

Yeah, movies like Transformers that promote muscle "gas guzzling" cars when gas was headed to four dollars a gallon sure helped GM, didn't they.
