Listen carefully to who is singing backup. There is no replacing the original but this is nice and gives exposure to The Clash's version (that's how I heard it).

It's a very by-the-note rendition of a classic. Safe but effective. I like Ms. Allen's voice, but it's the gruff desperation of Joe Strummer's delivery that really sells the song for me.

@durks1969 Bowie's cover of "Let's Spend the Night Together" springs to mind. He out-rocked the Stones. Also, I suggest listening to some of the stuff by Nouvelle Vague for some examples of covers that are better than the original. They don't all work, but when they do, they really shine.

another artist to do a good cover of this is 'Emm Gryner' she is from cananda, which means she doesnt have anything to do with the roots of this song etc, so would prob lead to bad comments, but as a fan of the clash, and music in general, i think its good that artists get to sing songs like this in there own style. esp if they are fans themselves and its not a money making westlife type of deal.

Stunningly shite. All the pop references, married with the beautiful drumming/dub/reggae/asian influences are utterly lost. I can't think of any way of producing this as schmaltzy and ersatz as this. Encase it in formica, and leave it to the internet bin.
Just sad to think how Mick Jones lost any social meaning, whilst Joe Strummer burnt himself out on anger.

It's a very by-the-note rendition of a classic. Safe but effective. I like Ms. Allen's voice, but it's the gruff desperation of Joe Strummer's delivery that really sells the song for me.

@durks1969 Bowie's cover of "Let's Spend the Night Together" springs to mind. He out-rocked the Stones. Also, I suggest listening to some of the stuff by Nouvelle Vague for some examples of covers that are better than the original. They don't all work, but when they do, they really shine.

@durks1969 Respect by Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding used to introduce it as the song a girl took away from me. All along the Watchtower by Hendrix, another obvious one. This will never beat the original but it is nice and she was chosen to do it by Mick Jones.
