Cool idea. Yeah, I think it would work. The frosted glass would reduce the range of the detection of your hand, but I don't think that would be a problem.
Have any idea whether the IR components would work behind frosted glass so that you could give it a more dulled out, trippy look and hide the electrical components?
Nice work :-) I've attached a video response of a similar project I did with interactive RGB leds put in Milk Bottles. I think you might like it.
