DJAVAN YOU ARE VERY SPECIAL MY MAN........THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER A DJAVAN ARE GREAT FRIENDS AND THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL.........NEVER TALK DOWN ON THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER
Great stuff! Can you imagine sitting there in the audience hearing Djavan singing like this at this early stage of his career? We are so lucky to have this performance on film. Thanks for posting. I also like his 'Tom Sawyer' outfit. It's real cool!
OMG I first heard this precious gem in about 1989 or 1990 on Ken "Spider" Webb's show on WBLS. I have been enamored ever since. I searched high and low for this album. I first found the cassette tape and eventually the CD.
OMG I first heard this precious gem in about 1989 or 1990 on Ken "Spider" Webb's show on WBLS. I have been enamored ever since. I search high and low for this album.
Djavan is one amazing composer and lyricist. His music is among some of the most complex and sophisticated in the world. He also has an amazing voice, being able to modulate his sound with the most beautifully controlled tremolo. Listen to Manhattan Transfer's homage to this composer (and others) in the album "Brasil", recorded way back in 1987...
I went to his concert last year. It was the most exciting moment of my life. I love him and his songs very much, since I was a child. I am brazilian and I consider portuguese the most beautiful language to write poetry and Djavan is a real genious in that.
I met Djavan in Boston about 20 years ago--my "boyfriend" knew his manager. It was the best show ever. Latinos really know how to enjoy a concert. (God forbid you should sing at a James Taylor concert!) What a show this was! Later, I went backstage and Djavan, who hardly speaks a word of English, said to me, "Are you good?" (I think that translated to "How are you?") I said, "Great show!" Awesome!
outrodavi, if you want I will teach you Portuguese... :o) but there is something about being born there, living there, BEING there, that cannot be translated.
Brownboykb: Thanks for this live clip of this song. Just as in NY this song was being played everywhere in L.A. Cali, the beaches on Sunday, jazz festivals, all the radio stations a.m. and f.m. jazz. I agree with you, the translation version to English didn't work.
He have a dvd with all this songs live and acoustic it's very good but I forgot the name , but I know that you gonna find on any Virgin music store all over usa.............
his voice is so beautiful and pure and it stirs beautiful emotions in me, without understanding the words, like this one is a painful love...and music which is jazz but specifically Brazilian, which is special to me because it is fresh and different musically fom mainstream Australian music...I'm Australian...)
One thing I really like about Djavan is his "jazzy" singing style, and his impeccable guitar playing. His melodies are exquisite, and his lyrics are very romantic and poetic...I listen to many kinds of music, and many Brazilian musicians are great, but Djavan is way up there with the "Angels". As with Mozart, it seems as if GOD Himself uses Djavan as HIS instrument to illuminate, inspire, and teach us new ways to love each other and to respect our Universe.
meu djavam é foda , as letras das musicas são que nem poesias e ele as canta com um sentimento fantastico , ele é demais é um dos maiores cantores brasileiros
First class blues. The harmony in this song is so mellow, it seems to be floating all along the melody line. Not to mention such fine musicianship on the part of the side guys.
Djavan's precise singing skills make it sound like it's an easy song to sing.
Let me guess, this got airplay on Softnotes?....Softnotes played some awesome smooth jazz and easy listening videos when it was on the air. Also, even though i dont really understand Djavan....LOL!!!!...but this song is smooth and nice!

You need not know a single word he's saying to know exactly what he's saying. As haunting as it was when I heard it years ago.

I first went to Rio in 1987, and this was playing everywhere. It's the most beautiful song, isn't it?
(The Manhattan Transfer recorded an English version called "So You Say" which is ridiculous, by the way.)

Alguem sabe se o Djavan já cantou com Milton Nascimento? Queria muito ouvir as duas vozes juntas.
