  • He is only 16 here, I bet Horowitz sounded much the same at age 16. I agree though that Horowitz had a way of playing Scriabin that was supreme, I am not sure if he has been surpassed by anyone.

  • I would like to see an older version of Kissin play this piece. This is way too muddy, especially the third variation of the theme. I'm learning this piece at the moment and I have to say this is difficult as hell, especially the second variation. Bringing out the melody with all those notes in between is no easy task. I can see why young Kissin struggled with this piece. Horowitz's version, imo, is god mode. Everyone who has played this piece can attest to that fact.

  • @nDNrMatt2 You should probably not play this piece if you find that second section difficult because you'll probably just end up sucking and ruining it like the many people that post themselves playing this on youtube.

  • @nDNrMatt2 Also, he didn't muddy that second section up at all. The melody comes out just right. In Horowitz version, I feel like he brought it out so much that it completely diminished the value of the left hand. It's your preference, but I think that kissin played it the way he did here, because that was his preference for the song, not that he didn't have the skill or talent to do it the way you wanted.

  • @SUPPLEANDFIRM The only significance those notes have is accompaniment. The skill what Scriabin is trying to get out of pianists is to get the melody out of a barrage of notes. Kissin played the second variation well, but the third was not done well, and it's quite obvious he was struggling. No way am I saying Kissin is crap. And even though I said the second variation of the theme is difficult, doesn't mean I can't play it. Practice makes perfect.

  • Kissin's rendition is quite good. But Horowitz' s LIVE RECORDING FROM 1953 is one of the greatest performances in the history of piano playing.

  • Seriously, you can't compare this version with Richter's, Horowitz', Sofronitzky's, or even Kissin himself with those pianists. It's still another world.

    so what? a slight mistake is part of the emotion of listening to live music - and is part of its beauty, too. Who needs impeccable studio recordings that have been edited 20 times in order to erase these beautiful "mistakes"? I am fed up with impeccable studio recordings.

  • @RArdray just don't rush sections that you're uncomfortable with, otherwise a load of mistakes will occur undoubtedly, you can hear here that he sounds too rushed at sections and only corrects himself when he realises

  • @jackbackjack9 Haha, months later: Yeah, one of the things that I've developed with age is patience. I'm still working on this piece and just now have become comfortable with the 2nd reprise of the first melody (with the 16ths on the right hand). At least for me, the rest of the piece isn't nearly as difficult. Starting with 8/12 before this one definitely conditioned my left for the large leaps, and big stretches aren't to tough for my big hands.. it's all the quick close notes that get me

  • Proved he was in the big leagues when he was just a child. Richter, Horowitz and Sofronitsky are amazing too.

  • he had the technique, but the interpretation and overall feel is muddled, ends up sounding like a giant wall of notes with no climax of emotions.

  • Horowitz recordings of this piece are spectacular, Kissins' is a little unrefined at pats. Kissins' Jew fro is mind blowing though 8/10.

  • At last, a version that's not painful to hear. Deep, dark, strong, moving... but without this aggressive virtuosity that most pianists like to show of with these kind of pieces. I'd rather hear Kissin's profound magic than Horowitz's dryness... Of course that's only a matter of taste.

  • Kissin's performance isn't continuous pounding like some commentators have asserted, it has episodes of peace when he reigns in his left hand. But when his playing IS heavy, the accompaniment sounds like Liszt Orage. I prefer Horowitz's recording since he withholds the intensity until the right moments, he has a better understanding of the rising and falling action in this piece.

    Of course, this is comparing the veteran Horowitz to the young Kissin - I hope Kissin revisits this etude sometime.

  • Not to mention i think you're comparing Horowitz in studio recording to this live version which isn't fair. In Horowitz's carnegie hall performance posted on here he certainly doesn't hold back the intensity there.

  • I meant Horowitz's live performance (in London?) from the Hirowitz plays Scriabin album. It's not as technically polished as the studio version, but the core interpretation was essentially the same. I think Horowitz captures the piece whether in studio or in the concert hall.

    Although Kissin's version is sounding better and better the more I listen to it. I think H and K agree with each other on this piece.

  • @demosj i was reading your comment and wanted to jump at it to say that horowitz has that massive experience advantage. Kissin was so young when he performed this and still is today, comparing to horowitz and his days of fame.

    Kissin is a geneous already and as he continues to study the works of the immortal composers, we can only imagine he would be as good as horowitz, if not better, in the near future.

  • @demosj I am glad you remembered the "age factor" in this comparison. Kissin did a phenomenal job for a 16 years old kid. Horowitz was 67 in the recording we have here in YT. Also, Kissin was playing live (an encore actually) and Horowitz's is a studio recording. But for me, personally, both great!!

  • Can anybody explain what happens harmonically during 2.43-2.47 - very magic modulation - seems like acoustic discovery by Scriabin.

  • It's just that the chord changes from C# minor to B major. Not exactly something invented by Scriabin, but very effectively used nonetheless.

  • These "long-hair" composers had one thing in mind......write music so difficult....so demanding, and put lots of diminished chords in it.....you need to study 10 years to play like this kid.....

  • It's quit good, but i think that the best version i have heard is that of the moldavian pianist Alexander Paley, who has recorded all the studies on NAXOS. HE is magnificent in this studie, much much better than anyone else i have heard

  • je suis d'accord avec crackapolo, il était trop jeune à cette époque pour jouer cette œuvre merveilleuse. La version d'Horowitz en live en 1953 (je crois) est LA référence.

  • D'accord avec vous ..il a 14 ans+- ...Quel travail , quelle mémoire pour intégrer la partition entièrement jusqu'aux bouts des doigts...Ce que certains pianistes jeunes ou agés ne pourront jamais jouer  quelque soit leur age - j'ai étudié les études de Chopin et je trouve que le répertoire de Scriabin est vingt fois plus compliqué à travailler question virtuosité et les écarts de la main gauche...Salutations Nickov. Seriously, without distraction, repeatedly listen to this recording and the one by (for example) Horowitz, both with discerning concentration, and seriously tell us which performance conveys more maturity and masterful articulation, not that Horowitz is perfect, but the experience speaks for itself. ---and coincidentally, my experience with Kissin has always been his concentration on excessive speed, overwhelming percussiveness, and unbridled rubato.

  • yout right I should have pluged my sterio in, but I do miss a lot of the dynamics and the swiches between singing (though at the moment this is one of the things I prefer most of kissin) and the almost wealing outcry of the main theme

  • i'd agree with that. everyone says Horowitz is better, almost by default. Kissin is an absurdly talented musician but no-one gives him the credit he deserves in a comparison. Horowitz' version of this has a LOT of mistakes in. I'm not saying he's bad, i'm saying, in my opinion, this is better.

  • I love Evgeny Kissin, but I will admit that he does have a slight tendency to bang at the piano, but that sforzando and passionate forte is not neccessarily a bad thing, only different. I love his engagement with the music and intense feeling (passion). By the way, there is nothing wrong with Hip Hop, and we should stop being so nationalistic and ignorant. At conservatorys there are a lot of 16 years old playing this but very few people playing it with the maturity, passion and technique Kissin had at this age. I think that this interpretation is incredible. Not the best (Horowitz for that) but still pretty damn good considering his age.
