He has such a smooth quality to his voice..it really makes you feel his heart is broken..pain comes thru..disappointment killing him..very nice Daryl...Philly is surly missing a big piece of it's heart!
What a fantastic re-imagining based on the Marvin Gaye song! Haunting melody and whistful lyrics floating on a cloud of blue-eyed soul. One of the best songs of the '90's and possibly the best re-make/re-imagine ever. Yes, it should have been a much bigger hit.
Used to play this in the car all the way to work and all the way home because it was happening to me. Seemed like he was singing a song my lfe had written. Funny how a song can help get a persons head on a little straighter.
Ha ha I love the ending of this video... Daryl as big roaring lion. All kidding aside, the entire Soul Alone album is quite frankly stupendous. I listen to it constantly, for some reason I never tire of it.
@SuddenSparkles You have impeccable taste. Absolutely an incredible record unfortunately overlooked by the critics. I never tire of it either. Daryl really can sing anything!
@SuddenSparkles I should give the album a second try. This was the only song that stuck with me. I have to admit that I was still stuck in the "Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine" period of his solo career, but I'd be willing to give it a second listen.
I just finished listening to Marvins version of this song,I Love how Daryl took the song and made it his own with his unique style,Daryl certainly has the voice to remake this Beatiful Love song.both are true Artists!
Great cover Daryl Hall. I'm sure Marvin Gaye is very happy with your arrangement of His song.Thank you for your style of music that people can appreciate. Love Always
I had to look up Marvin's version. This version is like Daryl picking up where Marvin left off, all while showing deep respect for a mentor. (If you hadn't mentioned this was a Marvin original, I would never have looked it up. THAAANNNNK YYYOOOOOUUUUU!!!)
Oh My Goodness!!!!!!!! This man STILL rocks my world!!!!! Crushes if they are hard enough never go away!!!!! He is sooo HOT! Hubby might be in trouble if I ran into Daryl :)
Daryl! The music vid producers did you well. Cinematographers positioned your colors & placed the scenes flawlessly. Thank you all for sharing with us. Thank GOD for Daryl.
does anyone know of the video filmed in the borrego desert where daryl is driving out on the highway in a jeep? i was stuck in that one and would love to see it...i think it's circa 1988-ish
I met a girl one weekend (first meet) and immediately fell in love with her. After the meeting she never kept in touch with me (I only wanted friendship...at least). Ever since that incident whenever I hear this song I think of her as if I have been in relationship with her for years...weird huh. Still in love with her. Is that possible or am I crazy:(
This song should have been released instead of "I'm in a Philly Mood." The album might have had a chance then. When I first heard this, I had no idea this was Daryl Hall; all I knew was I had to find it.
I LOVE this video!! Daryl has such a great voice!! Does anyone know where you can buy this video? I'd love to have my own copy!! I've seen him in concert 6 times and he sounds just as great in person-love him!!
OMG! I looked for this video when YouTube , first came out and several times after that but it wasn't posted. So I gave up. Thank you for posting this. My search is finally over. THANK YOU THANK YOU. Listen to that voice. Love it.
Where did you find this video? Soul Alone is one of my favorite CDs. It's brilliant. Nimbusters - see H & O Charlie Rose interview posted on You Tube concerning videos. If you haven't seen Hall and Oates in concert, I highly recommend. You will be entertained and if you're lucky, they'll perform Me and Mrs. Jones.
Several artists have gone on record as being influenced by them in the last few years. The one that comes to my mind first is Maroon 5's Adam Levine, who rocks H & O t-shirts onstage. Don't forget Gym Class Heroes, who have dubbed their current tour, "Daryl Hall For President" and are currently working on an album that will mesh Hall and Oates' music with theirs. I think MTV brainwashed people into thinking that if your videos were remembered, you must be lacking in musicianship.
If that were true about MTV, that would be shocking. Daryl and John were part of the first generation that was really boosted by MTV and before Michael Jackson broke with "Thriller," H & O was the one soul-inspired act to get regular airplay on the early MTV, which originally catered to rock. (Didn't hurt that H&O have always had a few toes dipped into rock.)
H&O's videos were mostly on the lame side, like they didn't want to do the video thing but had to because the record company was making them and they decided to make a mockery of it. But their music is the best!
They have gone on record as saying they don't really like it but it's a way to promote and be a presence when every person can't make a show or they can't hit every town. Btw, davemock, Michael Jackson is considered to be a great entertainer, but not a great "musician". Do you see what I mean? If you get a chance, check out Daryl Hall on Howard Stern. He talks about that kind of thinking at length.
You can send them to D's p.o.box in upstate NEW York or to the U-Watch lable office in New York.I also tried the new house he's renovating. I used to have D's home address in NYC but he hasn't lived there in a decade. I don't know if he got them yet since it was just last week.
You're someone after my own heart. I send Daryl and John birthday cards every year, even to the venue if they're on tour. I wish we could all get together and compare notes!
Do you know where I can send birthday cards? They live in Philly and I'm here in Canada. They came here in Vancouver in Aug.24. The concert was amazing! I wish we could get together and compare notes too. We can keep in touch by e-mailing each other. How about it?
As for John, I can only send to the lable's office because I can't get his home address. I heard online that a girl made a spoof video and sent it to John's house. If she comes on youtube, I hope she'll share her knowledge.
Thanks for posting this with great audio!! There are so many "dicky-low quality" vids and "wanna be" masturbational vids on here, that you're an excemption!!
Thanks for posting this. Beautiful voice, beautiful song, beautiful singer! I like it everytime his hair blows in the wind. It looks so dramatic and sexy!
This is why I love U-tube sooooo much! I never paid much attention to any solo work by Hall or Oates. This song is a jam and I'm going to check it out. Thanks for posting this.
some of you guys seem like you're all on crack! there's no question of their telent or looks or antyhing else! don't compare them to anyone - they are who they are and that's mad motha-f#$% TALENTED...OK?! peace
I could not agree with you more, but as to influencing other artists..I think Mick Hudnall would disagree. They are absolutely the best soul duo ever. They were inducted into the songwriters Hall of Fame, but that doesn't seem to hold any weight with the critics either. Velvet Underground...please.
daryl hall is such a pretty war babie in this video!!!! god! he's so sexy & hot in this video. he don't even look 47 in this video at all!! he looks more like he's 21, which is how old i am now!!! he has such a beautiful face! that it's so angelic, exotic,& with great bone structure!!! showing those beautiful high fashion-model cheek bones of his, that daryl should be a boy model & a singer too. he's got such a great look to do it!! daryl hall i love you forever!!!
@kirazinn That's actually what me and my friend said when we were watching the I'm In A Philly Mood music video...he didn't look 47 then! I don't know if this is what my friend was thinking but i was thinking (but didn't say it out loud because he's much older than me and i usually say this to myself and obviously didn't want to be embarrassed) he looks much younger...and hot!
Thank you so much for this video, haven't seen it for many years. I agree the 'soul alone' album is fantastic and sadly underrated. Daryl is so gorgeous !
i have been 'loving him' since 1976, can't believe it's over thirty years he's been making great music
Thank you so much byte19 for postin' this up of my Gorgeous MAN!!! I've missed it so much! By the way he just turned the Big 60 yesterday!! WOW!! He's so beautiful & an AMAZING Singer & Performer! Thanx again, I've enjoyed it so much!!
daryl hall is so beautiful in this video!! with that gorgeous blond locks & beautiful eyes, he's just HOT!!!! since he did try to get a little sexual in this video with the girl. damn it i wish that was me, i would love to kiss him in his video. that girl must have been one lucky B*** to be in a video with daryl hall. i wonder if that was sara allen? daryl hall rock!!
You tooked the words right out of my mouth! I would have use the same wonderful words! Daryl is such a Gorgeous Man! I have been a BIG FAN of him for such a LONG LONG TIME!!
@kirazinn No, that lady looked probably a lot younger than Sara then, since, you know, she's was probably the same age as Daryl since they were together for 30 years and the lady in the video looked a bit younger than Daryl and also i've seen what Sara looks like from H&O's Behind the Music Episode, she looks different, she's a brunette too but i think her hair's lighter than the lady in the vid. So I guess it was a very fortunate model!!
This song's original title was "When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You" back when it was written and originally recorded by the late, great Marvin Gaye for his 1978 double album "Here, My Dear." However, that original version never charted as a single. Thank God Daryl Hall brought it back to life with this excellent version for his woefully underrated 1993 solo album "Soul Alone."
Actually, it's a derivative work. There are 2 versions of the song on "Here, My Dear". Neither, however, are much more than a groove and a refrain. Daryl's "version" is built (lyrically and musically) around MG's excellent refrain. It's an unappreciated (and very skillful) adaptation.
Wow! I never ever, ever thought I'd see this video again. I'm one of the few people that probably remember when VH1 was playing this for a month or so back in late 1993 or early 1994. Too bad it didn't become the big hit it deserved to be, esp. considering it's a remake of a Marvin Gaye tune.
I think it's because music journalists critics vote on the R&R Hall of Fame inductions, and they mostly pick artists that were either critically acclaimed in their day, or were considered to be hugely influential to other artists (or both). Popularity is much lower on the totem pole in their decision-making. Hall & Oates were never hugely acclaimed by the critics, nor are they considered very influential by that body of writers. Popularity doesn't guarantee Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction...
...That's why Talking Heads and Velvet Underground are in the R&R Hall of Fame, while other artists like Kiss and Hall & Oates are not. Bear in mind that this is only my opinion as to why Hall & Oates are not in the R&R Hall of Fame. I don't agree with the reasoning.
...I think Hall & Oates put out some of the best blue-eyed soul in the Rock & Roll era, and they remain one of my all-time favorite acts. On top of that, they remain the most successful duo on the Billboard pop singles chart in the rock era. They should be in the R&R Hall of Fame, regardless of whether they're considered derivative or not, influential or not, critically acclaimed or not.
without the H20 this could have never been number 1, brilliant track but DH was always best with his leading man John Oates

However, that original version never charted as a single.

Daryl explained this before this album was released.

Anybody but me wonder why Hall and Oates aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...it's a travesty. Just listen to this guy..

H & O are influencial, resulting in many people sampling their work(Young Jeezy's last album)and echos of them in the work of countless artists.

...That's why Talking Heads and Velvet Underground are in the R&R Hall of Fame, while other artists like Kiss and Hall & Oates are not.
