  • Hi,

I am 29 and my resting heartbeat is 80. When i do jogging itself my heartrate is at 140-150 range. and when i starts running at 10 kmph it shoots upto 180 or so. I started doing cardio resently .. Just wanna know your comments if it is good for me to run at a higher rate of 10 kmph or above.. ? thanks

  • Can somebodyy help me im doing every day like 1000 calorien on my crosstrainer but i see no improvement in it, i was eating nothing last week till diner, but i came to the conclusion that you must eat to burn fat and that you must eat food with good fats, but i want to know my heart ratio so i can burn fat and i think what im doing on crosstrainer became condition training :S

  • muscles convert to sugar not fat

  • Does this mean you don't have to replace blood sugar with protein shakes, bananas etc after gym? Does this vary depending on whether the goal is fat loss vs muscle gain?

  • Oh hello! Have you ever tried intellectus 424 diet (do a google search)? Ive heard some great things about it and my cooworker lost crazy amounts of weight with it.

  • yea you burn up the all the glycogen in your blood stream at around 10 minutes of jogging. The general rule of thumb is if you can have a conversation or your just not GASPING for air, then you're in the 'fat burning zone'. so after 10 minutes your breaking down fat. Some say this increases fat burning by up to 300%! You can compound this with a fast metabolism. The same kind that natural bodybuilders use work well. Just google "your fit assist maniac" cuz it gives a few examples

  • Hi hi! Have you considered intellectus 424 diet (do a search on google)? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my cousin lost crazy amounts of weight with it.

  • thanks for the great video! I went for a run this morning and I experienced exactly what you described , even after taking a cool shower and I dried off , the sweat was still dripping from my fore head , back , etc.. what do you recommend at this point of recovery? should I be eating or drinking anything in particular after my run?

  • i have a question if i wanna lose wight what happen if i exceed the 70% of my maximun heart rate, will i burn fat or do i burn muscle, i hope you answer me, thanks???

  • @eduardosg21 You will improve your conditioning and there for raise your heart rates ability to burn fat. Meaning you will burn fat at a higher heart rate.

  • Hello, nice video. Have you tried Intellectus424 diet (Just google this) I found a free ebook download. Best diet I have ever tried! I lost all unwanted weight easy.

  • lol @ the hoards of great looking women lol

  • I do HIIT 2 or 3 times a week, and then long duration cardio 2 or 3 times (in addition to weight training). This combo has me leaner than any other time in my life.

  • yes bat after itense workout i should eat wright?because i need to have a little time to burn fat

  • @zombiekicker Well...that's gotta be better than being chased by hordes of UGLY bears, right?!

  • I'm a 26 yr old mom. I had put on about 56lbs during my pregnancy. I've got a resting heart rate of 62(bpm). I weigh 121 lbs now. I'm a fan of the paleo diet. I've only ever done cardio workouts 4 times a week for 1hr1/2. I've noticed a few times that resting or having a 30 - 40 minute nap during the day actually helped me lose the weight. Is that possible?

  • @19Ng84 No but breast feeding burns tons of calories.

  • @BodyPerformanceTV Thanks for replying! Yes, I believed that helped a lot. I haven't breast fed in over 2 yrs. It was when I got down to the last 12 lbs a yr ago, the real stubborn areas like my hips and thighs. I think it could have been my diet change and portion control, that helped! You will sure be hearing from me if I have any more questions, hehehe! Thanks!

  • lol running from hords of good looking women.

  • I used to think you would lose muscle mass if you burned off the glucose too fast. It makes sense that fat burn would take place.

  • who runs away from hordes of good looking women? haha

  • mann i like your body, and thank you 4 th vid

  • Dear Steve,

2 days ago I did 60 mins of cardio, which is my daily workout, followed by total body workout. After that I did "8 Count Ranger Body Builders" 2 sets 10 reps each. After the second set I almost passed out!! one of the gym staff ran and got me Apple juice!!! any ideas what could have been the reason ? I was thinking sugar drop but if that is the case why didn't my body transition to using fat as you explained in this Video?

    Thanks

  • @FJb87

I think it might have something to do with the fact that your body can only utilize fat when you are at a lower heart rate. Thats why the fat burning zone is effective at about 60% of max. If your much higher, you depleted all your free glucose, and muscle glycogen, and your fat doesnt get converted fast enough to keep up with the demand.

When you deplete all your muscle glycogen your body really replenishes that more % from braking down muscle than fat because its easier for the body.

  • @FJb87

I went from 286 to 180 by running 40 mins everyday, eating egg whites, and oatmeal. I was lifting like crazy, but not gaining an ounce of muscle, and I think running so hard was just killing it. I was getting stronger so I guess the muscle was becoming more efficient without gaining size. Once I stopped running everyday, I started gaining more muscle, without changing my diet at all. Basically once your muscle glycogen is depleted, the body wont hesitate to eat your muscle for energy.

  • @adil1011 So how long of time span did it take you to lose that weight?? Just curios.

  • @juu90

ummm it was a couple years ago, but it took me at least 6 months if not more. I dont know if your doing it for yourself, youll loose a lot of water in the 1st few days, and then not loose anything at all for somewhere around 3 weeks so just keep that in mind so you dont get discouraged. But even after the 3 weeks you might not see it, but people will start telling you!!!

  • @juu90 PS, i did eat bread and my veggies too, it wasnt a starvation diet

  • Good explanation because phenomenon happens to me!

  • OMFG THANK U SOO MUCH U JUST EXPLAINED SO MUCH IN ONE VIDEO THE KEY TO BURNING FAT THANKYOU

  • optimal rate is 55-65 % of max pulse

  • so how long will your body continue to turn fats into the sugar energy before feeling like it is going into stavation mode and switch to say proteins and muscle tissue for energy? if i came back inside like you said and let the sugar buildup from the fat could i go back out and continue the process over again 3 or 4 times or would one time be the limit

  • "chased by hordes of great looking women" LOL. A worthy goal.

  • thanks mate your funny :)

  • Are you sure that fat converts into sugar?

I think protein can be converted to sugar. but not fat.

Fat can't be converted in sugar and stored as glycogen etc.

Do you think that fat converts to sugar or you are just making this answer simple for beginers.

Please answer this. Thanks, you are great!

  • @DACEVKA gluconeogenesis - the formation of glucose from glycerol and proteins rather than from carbohydrates.

  • @BodyPerformanceTV Fat is broken down to acetylCoA, and enter the Krebs cycle (sugar burning cycle). During this cycle, the acetylCoA loses his two C-atoms (CO2), and is converted to malate, that can convert to glucose-6-phospate (glucose in the liver) via gluconeogenesis. The malate doesn't have the original C-atoms of acetylCoA. Fatty acids are burned in the flame of the sugar.

  • @mgtr15 Cell Biology 101.

  • @BodyPerformanceTV The definition you give is correct, Glycerol and some proteins can form glucose directly, but fatty acids (fat= fatty acids +glycerol) can't. And when you say that you can convert fat (most energy out of fatty acids) into sugar, it isn't correct. (the energy of glycerol is negligible). So your definition was correct, but not a good answer on the question.

  • @mgtr15 Thank you. You definitely know your biology. I have to remember I'm talking to plumbers, lawyers, moms, kids who don't understand biology. So when I say fat is broken down into sugar it's a concept they can understand. Eaier then the Krebb Cycle. EVen easier thean, Fat is broken down to create ATP and then ATP is used not only for regular energy but as energy to then reformulate more ATP to my glycogen. It begins to get tedious in a 90 second video. But I appreciate your help!

  • ok,so when you burn sugar, you body needs to replace it and so it turns fat into sugar right??so how come you dont burn fat when doing for example crunches, you burn sugar when you do crunches right??so how come your body doesnt turn fat into sugar when you do ab exercises???

  • Please stop referring to Maffeltone...

  • I've read Maffetone. Just recently actually. He has a point,...and it's interesting reading. But ultimately I don't think he's correct.

  • ive been using an elliptical machine for aout a year now and it typically says im in "cardio" rang for about half an hour and i have burned about 400 calories, all i know is im the sweatiest person there after and i feel great the next day

  • Thanks steve. Love your vids by the way, they helped me out a lot with understanding the body and not listening to myths.

  • Lol Steve you show up all the personal trainers at my gym, it's so funny! I only come to you for the real truth, you sir tell it how it is.

  • And mine too! Thanks!

  • Lemonblemon: Not that confusing, it's just a matter of monitoring and balancing your carbs based on activity levels. :)

  • u think this guy gets chased by bears alot?

  • can anyone tell me what a Vo2 max is cuz one time when i did cardio on the treadmill the thing said 238bpm i told a trainer at the gym and he told me to get that checked. i still felt ok though

  • It's just measurement of how much oxygen your body uses.

  • FUCK man your GOOD :-)

    THANKS MAN

  • confusing

  • Shouldn't fat burning be around the 120-140 range? That is basically weight control heart beat. I haven't tried out VO2 Max yet but I have gotten 182 which would be advanced cardio training.

  • Fat burning heart rates will depend or vary based on a person's conditioning.

  • If i understood this right, i should avoid using isostar during my workout since it contains 80% sugar (my cheap rip off does, not sure about the real one) . My body wouldn't have to convert (as much) fat into sugar since my drink is already supplying the sugar anyway? Guess I'm switch back to water again.

  • if you're trying to burn fat you shouldn't consume sugar, period. not before, not during and not after workouts. never.

  • thanks for the info,,

  • little confusing,,but i think i got it

  • Great advice! Thanks!! I had no idea! excelent

  • You're welcome!

  • I have a similar question that I've been trying to find the answer to. Does your heart rate percent relate to catabolism? For instance if your heart rate is above a certain percent will you be more likely to break down muscle as opposed to fat/sugar?

  • @TheRealWm I would make a gradual increase in activity over several minutes. Slowly get the heart rate up to 60-70% of your MAX ..THAT is when you burn fat and not sugar! Stay there for 15-45 minutes. Then weight train and carb cycle on cardio off days by taking in 80% of required carbs 2 days in a row, then 100% on the 3rd day (a weight training day) to burn more fat..good luck!

  • When you people will ever learn that there is no specific heart rate for fat loss, its an old myth...

The only thing that counts is a negative calories balance, and this goal can be achieved with any sort of cardio training. High Intensity Endurance Training will burn more fat than any low level cardio training. If Glucose is burned predominantly with an intensive training unit, then more fat will burned afterwards.

  • This is INCORRECT. There are fat burning heart rates and they vary by individual based on health & fitness levels. And people who are very out of shape should NOT do High Intensity Training.

  • But that doesnt mean that an untrained person shouldnt do an High Intensity training cause of his bad condition. Even if the person is running in an interval program for lets say 5 minutes with stops in each running, it will burn more fat than in any 30 minutes "breathable" low level cardio training, not to mention the afterburn effect.

  • what???

  • This is awesome! very interesting, thanks for the great videos

  • My pleasure!

  • this helped alot... thanks steve!

  • You're welcome!

  • You're welcome!

  • thanks man

  • sugar is used in glycolysis and eventually goes through the citric acid cycle and then oxidative phosphorilation, which produces ATP which is used as energy. What you're saying is sort of right except fatty acids undergo 'beta oxidation' and are turned into acetyl-coa which goes straight into the citric acid cycle. not sure if you're simplifying it or not but for those that dont know. Just saying, fats never become sugars.

  • Gluconeogenesis describes the process and regulation of converting various carbon sources (lactate, glycerol, and glucogenic amino acids) into GLUCOSE for energy use.

  • ye sorry, i thought you were referring to the fatty acids as well as the glycerol

  • Actually, he said, "break down fat, and covert that fat into sugar."

    Inacurate.

He was refering to fat, not Gluuconeogenesis.

    He just lost his credibility.

  • "Sugar"? I'M RIGHT HERE MAN! lol

I use minoxidil spray and I feel like my heart is always pushing harder. (But not beating faster?)

Rapid heart rate but not faster, does this make any sense?! am i goanna heart attack in my 20's?

  • Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying them.

  • Man ive almost watched all of ur videos and just cant get enough of them. You pack so much GREAT and useful info into each video. Thanks for the help and keep those videos coming!

  • man i dont run a lot but my heart rate got to 198 but i wasnt breathing hard at all and wasnt tired of running is that bad?

  • machines are wrong half the time

  • man this is so helping...makes me wonder why i didn't sweat my shirt off when doing cardio...but few seconds the sweat starts to wet my shirt...

  • Thank you! It's what I do for a living. PLEASE tell a friend!

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • Man!! You're the best teacher!!!

    Simple and clear!!!

  • Thanks!

  • man your so smart

  • Thank you! Please tell a friend!

  • wow this man is the man smart!!!! good for you steve, always makes sence.

  • Look up Gluconeogenesis asshole.

  • Comment removed

  • AHHAHAHAHA! Well said.

  • It is absolutely untrue that fat can turn into glycogen. You must learn correct physiology if you are going to represent yourself as a fitness expert.

  • Comment removed

  • Gluconeogenesis - Synthesis of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources, such as amino acids, lactate, pyruvate, and fats.

  • Yes, if running is too difficult for them. But as they begin to get in better shape and running becomes easier then running will burn more fat and calories.

  • So there is truth to people being able to burn more fat by walking rather than running?

  • Your pace (either walking or jogging) will be determined by your fitness level. And your fitness level will determine if you're taking in enough oxygen while exercising. If you're taking in enouigh oxygen you'll burn mostly fat with a few carbs. BUT if you're out of breath, the opposite will occur. This is why you want to do cardio (regardless of what it is) that gets you working, breathing deeply but doesn't leave you out of breath.

  • So does this mean that even if you switch from fast-walking to jogging/running, after a while when all your carbs are gone, you can start burning fat(converted into carbs) again? When does this conversion of fat to carbs happen?

  • Thank you! Actually, when I relaunch my site (April) in an effort to not have to personal train any more I'm going to start charging $20 a month to members to have all their questions answered with audio files. And then I will no longer be answering questions on You Tube.

  • I gotta hand it to ya Steve. You're the most valuble source of weight-loss/ muscle-gain info on the internet. I am constanty sourcing more and more info from ur videos to motovate and educate me during my personal body transformation. You never ask for money, you don't try to sell anything and you tell it like it is ( which is often a "cold reality.") I'm now well on my way to success thx to you.

    Keep it up Steve!

  • Glycogen is synthesized and stored mainly in the liver and the muscles.

  • Addtionally "belenbethelhem" is correct. Glycogen is a storage polysaccharide found in skeletal muscle and the liver. Glucose is transported in the blood to these organs and then converted via glycogen synthase to glycogen for storage...it doesn't take a bus...

  • I dont know where you got that fat is converted into sugar in the body because thats absolute nonsense. We do not have enzymes or metabolic pathways which do this. Fat when broken down is converted into acetyl coA, which can't be used in the liver for gluconeogenesis ( or glucose production), however acetyl coA can enter the krebs cycle and thus produce much ATP for energy, thats the purpose or burning fat...not increasing blood sugar.

  • And it gets to the muscle by....taking a bus?

  • glycogen is NOT floating around in the blood! it's a storage molecule found in muscle and the liver

  • im learning alot thanks

  • Thanks for ure videos, they have really answerd many of my questions/thoughts and so on. Ty

    friendly wishes Jesparns

  • Fatty acids can't be converted to glucose. However, glycerol, the molecule that binds fatty acids into triglyceride, can be converted to glucose. But the amount of triglycerides and by extension glycerol we'd need to provide our glucose needs far surpass the amount we can get from either diet or stored fat even combined.

  • oH THIS INFO IS REALLY USEFUL FOR ME, NOW i CAN ESCAPE FRON THAT BEAR WHO ALWAYS STAYS IN MY FRONT YARD. LOL

  • best fat burner is to get chased by a bear period.

  • Thank you so much! I am at 237 and teying to get down to 170 to have a baby! You are my inspiration!

I have the Nike triaxc8 and a membership to bally's... so off I go! Thank you for your encouragement! It means a lot!

  • Man, I was always wondering why I'd feel so hot AFTER working out rather than during.

  • glycogen is not found in the blood

  • Is that why I always want desert after I work out?

  • I guess it's all about the sweat.

  • aww... where is the slogan

"love your body, its the only one you got"??

    that slogan inspired me =]

  • If this is true or false no one really cares..

  • tssme if you listen to the video Steve says, "glucose and glycogen found in our blood stream, muscles, and liver" which is completely true.

This video helped me alot. I've used a formula to find my 'fat burning heart rate' and while it did consider my age, it didn't account for my fitness lvl or fat %age. Still I find that if I stick to the deduced heart rate, I do heat up immensely and I definitely sweat so I guess I'm on the right track.

  • This guy is obsessed with Bears, maybe he is into beastiality.

  • yeah... most likely and as all of our comments are certainly validated with master degrees in any field we discuss I´d say Steve dreams about being chased by a bear and hordes of great looking women. Then they all get to him and have a month long sex party.. nah, that´s my dream.

  • that was the best 2 min of my life

  • wonder how actually accurate that is. lot of fitness instructors speak and preach absolute bullshit. sweating is a way of burning fat??? mmmm... i know people that dont sweat and burn fat.

  • I know it's a joke.

Learn what sarcasm is, fucking retard.

  • lol

  • Where does this guy live that being chased by a Bear is common place?

  • its a joke you dork.

  • I'm more likely to be chased by a bear than 'hordes of great looking women' where I live.

And there are NO bears here.

  • wow, thanks steve. I've always been confused as to why AFTER my workout i'm still sweating like a P.I.G. Luv your vids.

  • hes fat

  • How many times would you say someone can break down fat? you mention that once you sugar is depleted the body breaks down fat to restore whats been used and that you can go out and do it again?

  • awesome info. I always wondered why I sweat so much as I try to cool down from a hard workout.

  • Steve, my man..you're making some serious errors. Glycogen in blood?? You mean glycogen that's being transported. Glycogen is mostly found in liver and then secondarily in muscle. Other than that..don't expect any significant amount of glycogen in your blood.

  • Oh..and the only glycogen that you will be "burning" is coming from your muscles (not the one in blood). You only way you mobilize glycogen from your liver is by converting it into glucose. I respect your opinions very much on exercising, but its best if you don't comment on the biochemical aspect b/c some viewer may take your info and may seriously harm him/herself.

  • Isn´t glycogen also found on muscles. People say that high intensity will kill muscle rather than fat.

Low intensity cardio for long periods (40 mins + ) burn fat better.

  • This vidoe just totally contrdicted his low carb theory?

  • A power walker will never be in the same shape as a runner. As for exercising intensly MAYBE 5% of gym goers hit that level.

  • Thank you! Very educating. (maybe misspelled the word but hey im not american nor english :P)

  • Wow Steve! Awesome videos. I thought me coming inside after some sort of excersize and breaking into a sweat was me being so out of shape.

    Thanks a bunch!

  • steve make a myspace =]

  • Wow, great breakdown of that information. I think thats the first time I've actually been able to comprehend what the actual physiological process is by how you explained it. I'm going to subscribe. BTW, I have that problem with the hordes of women. ...okay, I don't.. :(

  • Yes, drinking a sugary drink after working out is a great way to replace glycogen. Studies also have also shown that if you mix that drink with a bit of protein it also speeds muscular recovery. But replacing glycogen in this manner is typically reserved for very intense exercises that deplete glycogen. The average person doing 30 minutes of cardio doesn't need it. Yes you can build muscle & burn fat. This becomes more difficult as you get in better shape but that will take quite a few years.

  • Some bodybuilders believe taking in sugar, such as 8 oz. of grape juice, right after a workout is a must as it restores glycogen levels inside the muscles. Is this a good idea? From what you said, it sounds like this action would hinder the body from "burning fat", if I were trying to do so. Speaking of burning fat, do you believe it's possible to build muscle while trying to lose fat?

  • As a follow-up to the answer below, you burn fat (ATP) in an effort to break down the sugary drink you just consumed and convert it into gycogen and then stick it into the liver, blood stream and muscles.
