02. Oddly enough, two things I don't like about this film; I feel it should have been made in black & white and not in widescreen but the "old-fashioned" aspect ratio.
Anyway, a great, great film and thank you for posting it.
My dad was a huge Alec Guinness fan and after "Kind Hearts and Coronets," this was his favorite film; it is truly a very, very adult drama (and no, to your puerile morons, it's not a sex movie) though have John Mills as someone who was tortured in captivity does make this film a little too easy and obvious.
What if the two men had swapped parts? It was considered but this was made too soon after "Bridge Over The River Kwai" so the casting remained as it did. Still . . .something to consider.
Interpersonal conflicts and the standard basis for good drama are embedded into an alpha male machismo culture reinforced by the famous British er Scottish regimental traditions along with social cultural and psychological factors such as family dysfunctionalism in this extremely well conceived, scripted and acted tragic-drama. "Leaders are not allowed to be human" speaks volumes for the timelessness of social-psychological issues and stresses encompassing command responsibilities.
In my opinion, there'll be no other male characters (even among Ronald Neame's) much more similar personality with Maggie Smith's Jean Brodie as Alec in this film.
The relationship between Alec's character and John Mill's quite reminds me of the one between Maggie's and Pamela Franklin's.
The was my late father's 2nd favorite film; the first being "Kind Hearts And Coronets."
His 3rd choice was "Our Man In Havana."
All starring Alec Guinness.

Another classic.Alec Guinness never gave less than a very fine performance. This was a great script, and he did justice to his role in the film.

@SatchmoSings It was origanally released By Rank, but this is a Janus release taken from the Vistavision print, hence widescrren.

@gabbysbuddy So then, does also explain the almost totally inaudible sound?
And don't blame this on the "Youtube" transfer; it sounds like this on the DVD, too.
