This cast on is just really loose which works so well with brioche knitting. Plus the knitting just "begins" - there is no chain or braid effect along the bottom of the work then.
What's interesting is the in italy I am about the only one doing that cast-on, at elast occasionally. The average knitter casts-on with a long tail co worked with the needle grabbed under one arm and the yarn in two hands, while some prefer casting-on tubularly with the waste yarn.
Hi Alice, this cast on got its name from a German magazine called Burda published in the 80's. June Hiatt calls it the alternate cast on and I am sure that it has other names in other cultures. I stuck with the "Italian Cast On" because that is what it was called when I first used it. By the way, I also make a long tail like the Italians.

Is the first row easier to knit this way? Does it have other advantages versus other methods?

Delightful. Watched my relatives do this so often, but never slow enough to learn. Thanks again very much.
