And to answer your question, to start with the 5' tube, I've usually seen people cut it in half, using a similar method as you described with the carbide tip blade and do a score 1/3 - 1/2 of the tube. If you're concerned about not getting it straight, use a bit of water on the score or get a rod and heat the end hot and then put it on the score mark. That should give you some pretty clean breaks and a nice 2.5' length to work with.
find a piece of angle iron, and set it on a steel table so that the open end is facing down. cut notches at even distances across it. viola. cooling rack. cheers from a furnace worker.
